How much handguns can I train in a deathrace?

If I got out of my car and started emptying my clip into passing by cars - let's say I unload 3 full rifle clips - by the end of the deathrace, how much skill can a noob handgunner gain?

Depends on how much you hit, and how fast your character learns.

I'll try it some time later, but not anytime soon yet. Just asking so that I can plan in advance the specs of my gangers.

I done it a few times with new Handgunners, get 1 or 2 points a go. mid 50 dex.

Sounds fast, thanks.

I used to do this fairly often and had well enough results to continue doing it. It's both fun and good for training.

One suggestion though, if you are going to do this in DRs where other gangs are involved then let them know before the race starts what you plan to do. If they have no problem with it then shoot away. I never targeted player vehicles or npcs that were leading a race so my actions did not impact the outcome of the race in any manner.

Or just sign up with our Joel, you can then shoot at each other to your hearts content ;)

By the way I have a hunch there is a skill cap for skills gained in events. For instance I had a 193 turn event with a laser and fired at least half of those turns (at a demoed for target practice) but I only got as much skill as with a typical scout. So for instance you might only gain as much skill shooting 2 clips as you do shooting 4.

Anyone else have any input on this?

That's an awesome idea... go to non-league Deathraces just to get some handgunner skill. Brilliant! I love this out-of-the-box thinking that is a hallmark of Darkwind. :D

I still am trying to break my mind out of the typical MMO lock, where everything is on a rail, and you try not to be clever for fear of being labeled an "exploiter."

There was an argument some time ago between two members of the game. I won't mention any names, but suffice to say, it became very heated as one party claimed this to be a metagaming exploit in Darkwind.

Well, I can see how some people might consider this an exploit, but the litmus test I give things is this: can I imagine people in this situation actually doing this? In this case, it's a resounding "heck yeah."

In an apocalyptic world, at a deathrace, someone in the stands whips out a shotgun and starts plinking away at the drivers as they pass by. I can totally imagine that. Therefore, not an exploit. :D

I'd still do it now and then even with no skill ups - it's a lot of fun.

in wilderness scouts I typically get 1-2 points gain emptying 4 clips.

Since there's only one "handgun" skill, it doesn't matter what weapon I use, right? So I can train up using pistols and then the skill would apply when I'm shooting "for real" with rifles. Right? If that's the case, pistols are the way to go, since you can carry more ammo per person.

I have an evil idea... attend a deathrace with a 2-person car; have them both jump out, run to a secluded area, and fire away for a while. With their last few shots, shoot each other, to train their Courage and Medic skill.

:p
