This is IMO one of the most epic dogfights of all time. It's between an F4 Phantom (piloted by "Duke" Cunningham and Willie Driscol) and a Mig-17 with an ace Vietnamese pilot, probably Col. Nguyen Toon (a.k.a. "Tomb"), a pilot so legendary he may not even exist at all.
Someone was mentioning dogfight tactics in lobby and while most of the tactics here are 3 dimensional and don't really apply to DW it reminded me of this particular fight and I had to spend the next hour or so trying to find it on YouTube. The video is from the (ahem) pilot episode of Dogfights on the History Channel. For just the dogfight itself drop in to part 8 at 1:04. For a little more background (on the planes themselves, the crew, and their previous kills that battle) drop into part 7 at 1:06. This will also give you some perspective on the kinds of fights that happened and also why this one stands out past the others. |

Great move on the f4 huh no Gun? WTF
Then they wonder why they barely had a 1:2 kill ratio compared to Koren 1:8 1:15(depending who you ask). |

Yeah deciding aircraft don't need guns ranks right up there with decommissioning the A-10 Warthog and the naval battleships. The 16 inch guns on for instance the USS New Jersey could launch a 2400lb armor piercing shell 24 miles away with stunning accuracy, and no amount of jamming will save you from it.
Actually on checking wikipedia it seems they never actually decommissioned the A-10! Woot! Expected to be in service until 2028. ![]() I can has flying armored gun? I heard a story about the A-10's 30mm gun when I was in the military. It seems they used to target practice on these plywood targets they put up on telephone poles in the desert. They had done this with 20mm main aircraft guns for years. They had to stop when they used the A-10. It tore down the poles. |

My first ever "Show and tell" was about about the F4 Phantom. UK squadrons had them. Cool as F**k.

The F4 Phantom is proof that, given enough power even a BRICK can fly! |
