Darkwind
Courier mission regenerating

Zephyr

Posted Feb 9, 2010, 3:56 am
I have gotten to the point where I have a good number of couriers running missions to and from Somerset. I have noticed that the courier missions offered to me when I click on the "advertise for courier missions" link do carry over from one request to another (which is cool). Now I find I am running out of courier missions. My question is, how fast do these regenerate? Once a day? Every hour? Random intervals throughout the day?

I'm pretty sure they regenerate once you complete them.

I've also noticed that I've only failed 30 courier missions this month, (Sam said you had to fail 150 of them for this to happen, I think) and I cant do any more missions for the whole month. Is this normal?

Hell, I only failed 10 and an escort mission and I can't take any more this month. Maybe it's a bug?

Not a bug, no. I recently added code to stop players who were failing lots of missions from being given more. (It was never 150, BTW).

You're currently allowed to fail a max of 8 in a month, or no more than one-third of attempted missions if you have failed more than 3 but less than 9. Is this too heavy-handed? It seems to me that word would get around fairly quick if you were repeatedly losing the goods?

Hmm... if this is put in place to stop what I think it is, perhaps just have it block you out of accepting missions if you drop your fame below 0 for 1 month?

Really, I think it'd hurt the new guys quite a bit how it is... travels can be tough for them and they struggle to make money at the start usually.

Or perhaps have no fame change for a failed mission, and instead just a rep drop.

I'm removing negative fame BTW, it was never intended (and it makes no sense logically).

I could easily raise the cutoff levels of 3 and 8 described above, if necessary.

Probably for the best. Or make it a weekly reset. I'll try find some "new traders" to talk to, find out how often they lose stuff.

What? Sure you can. Fame and rep are different things Groggy.

We could always replace it with...
"Most Kills"

No, if we take total skill of said ganger into account...

I feel like the fame/rep drop you take when you lose missions is a decent way of approximating "word getting out".

While it's important that the exploit be nixed, perhaps we can raise the ceiling to twice as high - so a player can lose a full load (ten)of missions and (if they have the fame/rep to take more) take at least a half load of missions after that.

I have a question about the failed missions thing.

I just started getting the message that I can't accept any more missions (not that there are any courrier missions around to be had anyway), but don't see any kind of triggering event. Is this date driven somehow?

By my count from the "activities" tab on the My Gang page (By the way, is there a better way to track this?), I've failed 7 out of 27 in the last month. Admittedly some of these were because I lost track of them (I tend to do lots of "little" missions and occasionally forget about them) and some were because I got jumped and lost the cargo, but I genuinely intended to complete all of them. (I say this because I assume that the code was put in to prevent people from just grabbing all the missions without that intention.)

Is that too many failures? I somehow feel inclined to point out that my fame is about 500, and my rep is 700+. While this doesn't necessarily speak to my reliability with regard to missions, I would hardly classify my gang as "dubious".

And what is the triggering event that determined that I was no longer eligible? I haven't failed or succeded any mission in the last couple of days (I don't think) so why did it pick today to lock me out?

And when will it recalculate so that I can start taking missions again?

I might also suggest having the value of the missions play into this somehow. The missions that I've failed (for the most part) involved a payment of less than $5K, but I've simultaneously completed several "big" missions, and yet the two count the same when it comes to the lockout. Seems unjustified somehow...

Sorry if this sounds whiny, and it frankly isn't that relevant to my gang because of the types of missions that I typically take, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

I could increase this, sure.. maybe doubled, you said simon?

Once per day, 'recent activities' that are more than 1 month old are deleted from the database. So the calcs change at that point.

Thanks for the quick reply, sam.

It's kind of a hard thing, I think, because I understand exactly what you're trying to do. It's just a little frustrating because I think of myself as a relatively decent and well-meaning mission participant who got caught in the cross-fire. (Although maybe I'm just an unreliable courrier :) ).

Good thing this is in the newb forum.

1) Where do I check failed missions?

2) We are currently having a problem where no one (that I know of) can advertise for and accept courier missions.

1. gang page > activities

2. you may have used your quota for the day up, if you have running missions, then when they complete more will appear

1) thank you

2) I haven't run any missions today, how could I have used my quota up?

This looks like a bug, caused by the changes I made today for per-town fame/rep. You're referring to the fact that when you try to accept a mission it just say "You have hours to complete the mission" but nothing is put in your lockup?

That's the exact message I get.

So what do you do with the stuff you fail to deliver if you, well, fail to deliver?

If you missed the deadline, and you still have the package you can sell it to the NPCs in the Marketplace.

It'll hurt your rep a bit, but the hit shouldn't be outrageous.
