Darkwind
slow website

lordbam

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 2:11 pm
it might just be me, but the website seems slower.
especially loading unloading tyres, guns and so on.
Shops are also slower when loading.

did a bit of timing:
between clicking order new vehicle and seeing them:
SS: 7 secs
texan: 9 seconds
sarsfield: 8 seconds.

During this time the browser just waits and my cpu doesn't get any special load.

Other parts of the website work normal. I think querrying the database is just slower then usual.

I am having none of this issues Bam

Website is slow for me rather randomly. Sometimes it works really fast, other times it takes forever to get it to load. Just one of those things that happens.

For me it's usually more of a problem when I refitting cars. I'll get a chunk of the weapons list, say, and then have to wait a few seconds for the rest. It means I've given up on trying to strip potentially useful stuff from loot cars before selling.

I even went back to using Firefox as it was unbearable in Chrome.

Just checked and BL takes 9 seconds for me, so I'd say bam's numbers are fair.

we have a bit of new players so Id guess the servers are getting a workout
*Tinker*

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 3:46 pm
Maybe it depends on the player's geographical distance from the server?

and yea it's been slow lately
*Wolfsbane*

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 4:07 pm
If it's the same server that's used for the in-game stuff, I live about two hours drive from it.
*Longo*

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 4:13 pm
Crazy slow for me too. I tried using both IE 8 and Google Chrome and they both lag also.

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 4:17 pm
Same here, especially when changing vehicle equipment...
lordbam

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 5:29 pm
Tried Version 1 of the website and that has the same problem.
*sam*

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 5:35 pm
Seems to be the database,.. but does it coincide with busiest times?
And only certain things seem to be affected? The forums are acting ok?
FireFly

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 5:37 pm
Yeah, never had a slowdown in the forums, its mainly when dealing with the vehicles for me, and the gang management in general, switching equipment is a chore...

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 5:38 pm
To me it's the Character page (particularly 'characters by town') and add/remove weapons, tyres, and engines to a vehicle.

My times are pretty much in agreement with others above. It's either quick and snappy or I'm running at 7+ seconds to load a page.
lordbam

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 5:38 pm
yep forums work great

Tested again with wireshark running.
If you want i can give you the dump.

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 7:06 pm
I can agree with everyone's numbers, 6+ seconds to load, but only when managing vehicles and gangers, forums/wiki/gazette all load just fine.
*sam*

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 7:16 pm
I'm guessing here that the size of the vehicles table, or one of its related tables in the database, such as the weapons table, might have recently crossed some threshold or other in terms of size, and MySql is suddenly inefficent at using it.

This is only a wild guess but it's the only possibility that has so far come to mind to explain why some website pages are fine while others aren't.

I'm pretty sure it's not server overload since only some functions are affected. Also I have monitored the server at times of high load and it's handling it fine - CPU usage averages no more than 50-60%.

I'll do some MySql research..
lordbam

Posted Feb 18, 2010, 8:46 pm
It is possible the table doesn't fit the ram anymore...
That will give a BIG performance hit.

character and vehicle page load fast. so i'm thinking it is the weapons table that is giving you troubles

tested in sars MARKETPLACE:

vehicle load: 1 sec
weapons load: 0.4
engines load: 7 seconds

That's what takes the most time for me, have a suspicion it depends how many weapons you have in your lockup?

Tires on the other hand are nice and spiffy fast most of the time, sometimes it slows down though

Admittedly I don't use the website as much as you guys, but the one place I have noticed a massive problem is the *bottom half* of the 'install/remove items' page. The top half (stuff in your lockup) loads fast, but then there's several seconds before the bottom half (details on the specific car you're working on) appears.

edit: and the problem only happens when you're doing the car maintenance in a floating window. It's just fine when you go via the Mechanic building in town and the 'install/remove components' link.
So... looks like it's a client-side issue after all, possibly the way the floating windows are being created..
*Wolfsbane*

Posted Feb 19, 2010, 10:28 am
Just tried going through the mechanic in SS, and the slowdown seems almost the same - around 6 seconds rather than seven. It even stops most of the way down the weapons list, just like the floating window. I'm testing by stripping weapons off loot vehicles and waiting for the screen to refresh, because that seems the slowest thing to me. Is it possible this only affects packrats with huge hordes of stuff in their lockups (like me)?
*sam*

Posted Feb 19, 2010, 10:37 am
Hmm that's strange. Yeah it could be huge lockups at fault; the symptom I'm seeing in the floating window may only be a small part of the problem you're seeing.

Posted Feb 19, 2010, 10:49 am
Yeh this delay happens to me all the time... where I have heaps of gear.
*sam*

Posted Feb 19, 2010, 11:18 am
What about in towns/camps where you don't have lots of gear.. are you seeing the same thing as me? -- fast response if done via the install/remove link at mechanic shop, delay of several seconds after the lockup items have been listed and before the vehicle is show, if done in floating window?
FireFly

Posted Feb 19, 2010, 11:35 am
I see this in most "Lists", weather its the long SS market, or any of my stocks really, it cuts out halfway trough the list... and loads for another 7 - 10 seconds, makes fitting cars a chore...

I do have a lot of stuff, that is true... some kind of [x] instead of just clicking add would be mostly appreciated, and has been suggested before...

i have almost nothing in GW.

loading stuff in the marketplace:

loading vehicles: 1sec
loading engines: 1sec
loading weaps: 8 secs

i see 6 cars,
i see 9 engines
i see 4 weapon

these numbers include what other people are selling too.

Tested mine at the NPC vendors in two towns based on how much equipment I have in storage. Times are average of three attempts.

Somerset (most gear) - 58.14 seconds !
Texan (least gear) - 3.74 seconds.

Im also running a bit slow in scouts. After I hit tab(end turn) the game pauses like 2 seconds before acting.

actually measering something multiple times is a bad way of testing :-)

The server or you computer could have cached it so it speeds up the 2nd time.

You are probably also not taking the load of your own computer into account.

Having speed problems also, specifically with the response from the little windows you get when you bring up info on a vehicle for the purpose of manning the vehicle and putting reloads in the vehicle (the two items I was working on that the website got all pokey on). Forums haven't been a problem for me.

This morning as been very particularly hard to load squad pages, many of us had the same problem at the same time, and it's still happening apparently as of 13:00

Posted Mar 1, 2010, 1:33 pm
I've been having problems with it since I logged on about 5 hours ago.

For me, the only page that is having trouble is the My Squad page. All else loads up fairly quick, about as much as normal. Once the My Squad page is open, I can open individual squad pages immediately. It's just that one page giving me trouble.

The page does load eventually, but only after 2-3 minutes.

Woah yeah that was slow. I just rebooted the database server and it seems to have helped. It was last restarted about 6 months ago, maybe that's been our problem all along..
*Wolfsbane*

Posted Mar 1, 2010, 2:07 pm
I still find changing car weapons as slow as before, but the squad page has certainly speeded up since this morning.
*sam*

Posted Mar 1, 2010, 2:15 pm
I'm gonna run some tests and see where the bottleneck is..
*sam*

Posted Mar 1, 2010, 4:39 pm
I have figured out the problem on the lockups page.. probably something similar on the install/remove parts page. It's strange that it suddenly got so bad though, must be related to table size.
*sam*

Posted Mar 1, 2010, 6:56 pm
Even though weapons, engines and tyres are all dealt with in the same way in the database, only weapons have gotten really slow when certain queries are run. It has to be related to the size of the table.

I have re-written the offending code on the install/remove page, with a big improvement evident I think. Is there anywhere else that pages are really slow?

-- I know the characters list is one, it's probably the same cause, I'll check it out.

Have you checked this since I made today's changes? The install/remove of all components were being affected by slow queries on the weapons

You mean the characters list? I have improved that a little by obtaining the leader in a better way, but more work is needed on the main list

Squad page - you mean the 'My Squads' list?

I have learned quite a bit about optimising mySql today.. improvements in several places :-)

There were a couple of examples of tables that were incorrectly created (different on my offline version and the live version.. strange..) which were causing a full reading of all data whenever anything from the table was needed.
*Wolfsbane*

Posted Mar 1, 2010, 10:40 pm
That's a lot better - down from 7-9 seconds to about 1.5. Thanks!

I have finished optimising the database now (I think) - the buy/sell components function (at Jake's) took a bit of work because of the 'overabundance' calculation.. but it's looking good now.

I'm not aware of any remaining 'slow pages' -- but please let me know if you see any!

I learned some stuff about database design I didn't know before. Hehe. These changes have probably halved the server load, BTW.. you'll probably see the effects elsewhere too, for example big events will roll their turns faster because the database is no longer monopolising the CPU.
