Darkwind
dwarf fortress challenge

while I'm waiting for the bloodlines turns to roll until it's mine turn again, I'll try some stupid ideas challenges:

http://i50.tinypic.com/2viji12.png

a sandy map, with no water sources, a full blown bog preventing me to get the juicy stone and the component required for steel, marble, so down that will surely be overwhelmed by caverns and forgotten beasts.

the only facilitation is all the trees available: those will make at least building the pumps to clean the bog straightforward, so I can focus on figuring out how actually do that. I would have started on a wasteland but there was none with a suited aquifer  :cyclops:

now, that's encouraging:

The expedition leader is preparing carefully for the challenge:
the plan is to avoid vasting money on trained dwarves, as we're not going to produce anything trading worth for a while, because all the stone is locked away. we're instead buying up food drinks and a lot of wood: the starting outpost will be aboveground, built one plank at time; even if the area is heavily forested the small size will mean not having much three available. we need to do that fast so every dwarf will have every job enabled, after the first migration we can probably start having some specialist, but it depends, as we'll also need to put dwarf in the military early to go fight back the metal veins in the underground caverns.

walled in. getting to the stone will take an awful lot of time, so I won't be able to prepare myself for future goblin sieges.

More so because I forgot to bring a pick. Now I've to build an outside depot, and a retractable bridge to manage the passage.

Luckily I've started off with some stones, so I can build the mechanisms for the bridge and his lever.

...turns out stone blocks could not be used for mechanism and other stuff where rock is needed.

I'm so in trouble now. I'll wait the first caravan, get some pick and metal, seal the bridge and put guards patrolling the wall second floor, so I can spot ambushes early on.

I'll then trow dogs at them from the walls...

while the bridge was down we were attacked by a vile creature!

I had only managed to train one war dog, I wonder if it'll survive.

I guess this will go on until he stumble on one of my woodcutters...

a flurry of activity: I'm collecting wood for crafting worthless stuff and encrusting it with the bones of butchered animals to make it less worthless

http://i48.tinypic.com/1z2lgg5.png

I don't have a bookkeeper nor a broker so I don't know their actual value, but I'm packed with dog bones encrusted cedar bracelets

I hope they value a pick. and some copper maybe. So I cna make a copper table and get the accountant working

the caravan is there!

with no picks obviously - but I got some copper crap to smelt. And an anvil.

winter cometh. the caravan had just leaved and animals are getting more and more aggressive every day.

with such a small area and all the people gathering any bush they can get their hands on, wild animals are starting to plot against me.

a sneaky deer kung fu master has just suffucated my armorer:

and I fear to know what all the foxes are up to...

reached the dreaded aquifer, now the real work may starts....

on the plus side I've started using the water source for farming

I've material only for only a few pumps, I'll need to dry it one small piece at time

elves cometh!

could not trade anything because of their wood good refusal, so I killed them all and stole their stuff. I've now a lot of weird tame animals (a toad!) and a crapload of wood stuff to trade with my outpost liason

http://i48.tinypic.com/2004f9x.png

also, all the drinking ad eating problems are resolved for a long while

it didn't helped my mood dwarf to create his stuff, however, and he went berserk. the bugger wanted stone, the only commodity we don't have.

I wanted to give him a beating and a period of detention, but one guard had a lucky hit on his throat:

turns out the miner was a good friend of everyone. now there are a load of dwarfs getting insane by their tantrum.

the most notable one being a woodcutter. instead of getting stricken by melancholy or becoming insane, this one went berserk. and it is now in a martial trance.

the current population is down from 15 to 20, but most of the military squad is too insane to deal with a crazy axedwarf.

well, are always the best one that go berserk, as they say:

http://i46.tinypic.com/66ciz5.png

probably also thanks to all the training he got beating up my war dogs and recruits

then shortly after another two went berserk: the blacksmith and another woodcutter. The remaining live dwarfs run for their life, and I cannot blame them.

the settlement lies now abandoned....

nanofortress experiment, take 1. failed.
