I just upgraded to 10.6.3, and now I can't get the game client to load past the login. Are people logging in alright with Snow Leopard?

I'm on 10.6.4 and have no problems.
You are running the chat program, right? You should be running darkwindLobby.jar which calls DarkwindOSXClientPPC even though you're using an Intel machine. Does that help? |

Raife Posted Jul 18, 2010, 3:27 am |
Yes, I know how to start DW on a Mac, jimmy. I'm still downloading the 10.6.4 update, so we'll see if that does it.
Hopefully my gangers won't die in this travel they're in in the meantime. |

I updated to 10.6.4, but still couldn't start via the .jar file. I was able to get on by launching the client directly, however, so I took care of the travel.
I'm not sure why the .jar launch is not working for me after the Snow Leopard upgrade, but it isn't. |

it works on mine, both when I was at .3 and now. when I upgraded to the latest, a java update followed, so check for that also. then I'd suggest to check read/write permission in the darkwind folder and children. also, try launching the jar from the command line and see if the client crashes or if it's java not starting at all. |

I apologize if I gave the impression that you didn't know. I work in technology and when you do "help desk" type activities you always cover the basics first, even if you know the person knows what they're doing. I've been on the "needing help" end and someone outside the problem will think of things that, in my frustration, I've overlooked. JL |

No worries, jimmy.
I grabbed the java update along with 10.6.4, so that's not it, and permissions are read & write all around. The login screen comes up fine, it updates the engine fine, it opens the "Game Client is Loading" screen with the car, but it never launches the client. It just drops. |

Did you have a backup of your Darkwind folder? I regularly copy it so I can quickly replace it if there's a problem...
Barring that, you could try re-downloading the client (if you didn't already). |

Raife Posted Jul 18, 2010, 9:35 pm |
Yeah, I have no idea. I'll try re-downloading it, thanks.

Raife Posted Jul 19, 2010, 5:08 am |
Re-downloading worked, although it said it had to install Rosetta before running DarwkindPPP or whatever. After that, it loaded up fine.
|
*jimmylogan* Posted Jul 19, 2010, 5:20 am |
Ah - that would explain it... When I transferred my user to this new machine I was prompted to install Rosetta right away. I didn't try DW for a short while, so by then it was already installed.
Rosetta is required to run PPC apps on an Intel machine with SL as it's an Intel only OS. |

It's strange that Snow Leopard seems to be reporting to Java that you're using a PowerPC processor. I just checked my own Snow Leopard machine and it's doing the same thing.. although it runs the PPC client quite happily and I have never installed Rosetta.
I just did some web searching and it seems that Snow Leopard is the 1st version not to support PPC.. I guess it must be reporting incorrectly to Java. |

Is it recommended not to upgrade to SL at the moment?
|
*sam* Posted Jul 23, 2010, 11:43 am |
I'm going to take a look at the Java lobby client and see if I can get it to recognise Intel processors better, should be fine after that

*jimmylogan* Posted Jul 23, 2010, 12:22 pm |
From Sam? Or in general? Speaking from experience, I like Snow Leopard overall and have been running it since it first came out with no problems (including DW). They finally took out Appletalk - if that makes a difference to you... |

Yep, I found it.. a 64bit Intel processor declares itself differently to a 32bit Intel, so my code assumed it to be a PPC.
I'll fix this later (Java project is on a different computer). |

OK, new patcher now uploaded (it will autopatch itself). This one correctly recognises 64bit Intel as Intel..

I've never complained about the speed, Sam, but I kinda hope this speeds it up. <cue more more more sound> |

Hey Jimmy how what do you think of Snow Leopard, and do you notice any difference playing DW?
and any difference/head aches in general? |
||
|
*jimmylogan* Posted Jul 23, 2010, 5:04 pm |
There was an early issue with Apple Mail when I moved to SL - but that was worked out early.
I've been moving away from AppleTalk for a long time, so that was no loss to me, but might be an issue. Preview is much more robust, plus other little things you don't notice till you use them... Overall I'm pleased with it! Have seen no difference with DW, per se, but everything is faster because it's a faster unit and running 64 bit natively. JL |

*sam* Posted Jul 23, 2010, 5:14 pm |
It was forcing you into the PPC build of DW though was it Jimmy? I guess the Intel build might be a bit faster since there won't be any additional translation/Rosetta stuff going on.
|
*jimmylogan* Posted Jul 23, 2010, 5:29 pm |
yes it was, Sam, but now it's NOT forcing me into the PPC version, just -
DarkwindOSXClient |

*sam* Posted Jul 23, 2010, 7:01 pm |
Yep, that's exactly what the new patcher (v.132) was written for Jimmy! - it now identifies a 64bit Intel correctly. |
