Modify the passenger section of the vehicle sheet to show what specialities each character aboard has so you don't have to scroll through every character to make sure you have a scout, first aid, salvager, jury rigger on board. You could color code it, combat arms could be green, mechanic skills could be blue, first aid could be red and leadership could be black. I realize this wouldn't help color blind people, but it would help the other 98.7% of us (per NHIS95)
Kinda like this: Passengers Name Location Hector 'Maverick' Cruz Driving [EXIT] Jury Rigger | Salvager Madonna 'Dogface' Talley Seat #2 [EXIT] [DRIVE] Sniper | Rapid Reload | Field First Aid 'Slick' Stuart Studdard Seat #3 [EXIT] [DRIVE] Sniper | Combat Psych |

*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Jul 25, 2010, 4:15 pm |
I like the idea, but it could get problematic for characters with 15 specs or so
FireFly Posted Jul 25, 2010, 4:17 pm |
I like the idea to...
But rez has a really good point... By the time you have those 15 spec people thou, you remember it all in the head anyway |
*Tango* Posted Jul 25, 2010, 4:20 pm |
Do they have 15 different specs, or 15 levels of 6 different specs? |
FireFly Posted Jul 25, 2010, 4:28 pm |
The latter, in most cases.
There are some people who likes to get one of everything thou... |
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Jul 25, 2010, 4:38 pm |
FF... I think you've misunderstood Tango's question.
In order to have 15 levels in 6 different spec your character would need... 90 specs. I don't think anyone has one of those yet In most cases people have 3 or 4 levels of 3 or 4 specs, Tango |
Marrkos Posted Jul 25, 2010, 5:06 pm |
This is probably extremely conservative. Regardless, the system/layout breaks down beyond 2 - 3 specs since it won't be feasible to leave off the level the character has achieved. EDIT: for example... Jim 'Jimbo' Barclay Driving [EXIT] Negotiator 2|Sniper 2|Rapid Reloading|Combat Psychologist 2|Jury Rigging 2|Machine Guns|Motivator|Reload In Motion Marlin 'Gramps' Swanson Seat #2 [EXIT] [DRIVE] Reload In Motion|Jury Rigging 'Tommy' Thomas Hatton Seat #3 [EXIT] [DRIVE] |
FireFly Posted Jul 25, 2010, 6:14 pm |
I guess your right...
Darla "Undead" Garcia Driving Rapidshot|Jury Rigging|Combat Psychologist||Rapid Reloading 2| Sniper Special 2|Engine Tuning|Motivator 4|Heavy Weapons Hmm... no, it seems like it could actually work. |
FireFly Posted Jul 25, 2010, 6:18 pm |
Well yeah, and as I said before, spend enough time with your people, and you'll know their abilities by their names, or more specifically, their nicks.
Marrkos Posted Jul 25, 2010, 6:19 pm |
No, Tags are too free-form, and not everybody uses them in that manner, so in only a very few cases would the information displayed be relevant.
*Ninesticks* Posted Jul 25, 2010, 6:20 pm |
Yep Tags already do this to some degree, you just have to come up with your own system of abbreviations etc.
If anything I would like to see the level of a spec as well when I look at a character in event rather than just seeing Sniper etc. |
*Tango* Posted Jul 25, 2010, 7:52 pm |
You could always abbreviate if space is an issue.
Passengers Name Location Hector 'Maverick' Cruz Driving [EXIT] JR3 | SLVG4 Madonna 'Dogface' Talley Seat #2 [EXIT] [DRIVE] SNPR4 | RR7 | FA11 'Slick' Stuart Studdard Seat #3 [EXIT] [DRIVE] SNPR12 | CP3 Yes, you could use tags, if you're not already using them for something else. Yes, you can expect someone to remember the specializations of 60 characters. Or you could make things easier for someone quickly trying to make sure they brought their JR or FA along on a scout. Even if you don't need it, maybe someone else would appreciate it? It's probably a moot point, we have just one Sam and he's a busy man. |

i still recon being abel to set a crew in auto config wuld be a god send!

*sam* Posted Jul 26, 2010, 1:26 pm |
I'm just working on this now.. (and also making crew part of a car's config).
How does this look for abbreviations and colours? (I tried to use 3 or less characters for the abbreviations) Machine Guns MG green Mine Layer ML green Heavy Weapons HVY green Flamethrowers FT green Laserfire LAS green Ballistic Prediction BAL green Rocketeer ROC green Moving Targets MOV green Sniper SNP green Rapid Reloading RR green Courage Under Fire COU green Engine Tuning TUN blue Jury Rigging JR blue Jumpstart JUM purple Field First Aid FFA red Rapidshot RAP green Combat Psychologist PSY black Defensive Driver DEF purple Offensive Driver OFF purple Salvager SLV blue Recruiter REC black Motivator MOT black Negotiator NEG black Reload In Motion REL green Deathracer DR green Shoot From The Hip HIP green Long Throw THR green Car Killer KIL green Runner RUN purple Slipstreamer SLP purple Pragmatist PRG black Adrenalin Junkie JUN black Eye of the Hurricane EOH black Mind Control CON black Telekinesis TLK black Pyrokinesis PYR black Electromagnetic Pulse EMP black Defensive Energy DE black |

Marrkos Posted Jul 26, 2010, 1:33 pm |
Looks reasonable to me.
*Bastille* Posted Jul 26, 2010, 3:02 pm |
I really don't wanna 'ave a go.... I guess Ill get used to this... but at the moment I find it makes the character section really cluttered. instead of being able to check my characters quickly at a glance, I have to weed through all this extra text... the vehicle page is starting to look like a flight info board. Sorry gents, I just have to be honest about this one. I don't like |
Ballistix Posted Jul 26, 2010, 3:03 pm |
Doesn't work for me at all...Do tags interfere with it?
*Bastille* Posted Jul 26, 2010, 3:07 pm |
I'm not sure, but I think its just for characters already in the car, so Im not really sure what its meant to help.
I think that would be better... and again, this is just my point of view. Great, quick work as always Sam... I just don't think its a good change, maybe Ill feel different when I get used to it. |
d0dger Posted Jul 26, 2010, 3:10 pm |
tags show when selecting crew to add to the car, these show on the vehicle sheet after they are already in the car. Hope that clears it up, unless they are not showing when in your car. It's all working fine for me. |
Marrkos Posted Jul 26, 2010, 3:27 pm |
It's working for me, but I'm not sure if I like it. As mentioned above, the character area is now very busy.
Have to see if it either grows on me, or I start to tune out the extra info. |
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Jul 26, 2010, 3:43 pm |
Could we not just have this option toggleable?
Groove Champion Posted Jul 26, 2010, 4:10 pm |
I'm not opposed to the idea at all, however the tags can already take care of the issue if used properly. When choosing the characters to load into a vehicle, their tag content appears beside their name: if you tag characters to show their specialized skills, you can have the necessary info to man your vehicles adequately without consulting the full character specs.
This method falls short with multiple specs, but it is a potential compromise. |
*sam* Posted Jul 26, 2010, 4:44 pm |
It could easily be optional, yep.
I'll add it to the options you get when clicking the 'edit settings' button on your gang page. I'll also hook up that little spanner icon to open that page, while I'm at it. |
Marrkos Posted Jul 26, 2010, 4:51 pm |
Don't forget that the spanner currently changes the background of the website. I use it at every login to change from the solid brick to the gas pump graveyard. |
Groove Champion Posted Jul 26, 2010, 4:51 pm |
I hadn't realized this was already implemented... Pretty nifty!
*Bastille* Posted Jul 26, 2010, 4:52 pm |
That would be neat if its an easy mod.... best of both worlds
*sam* Posted Jul 26, 2010, 4:58 pm |
Do you? I'd better make that an option too then.. |
Marrkos Posted Jul 26, 2010, 5:10 pm |
I do. |
johnny go Posted Jul 26, 2010, 5:16 pm |
ace!
what dose pragmatist do? |
Marrkos Posted Jul 26, 2010, 5:36 pm |
Courage Specs |
Marrkos Posted Jul 26, 2010, 6:24 pm |
Working perfectly. Thanks! |
d0dger Posted Jul 26, 2010, 7:39 pm |
I really like this, even though it will take some time to get used to...
Now, since you've written most of the code already for this... Could this format be an option to view a list of all your characters in the gang at once? Either a menu option, "My Characters (spec listing)" or, as another button on character page like the addictions and untrained specialisms check? |
*Tango* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 12:32 am |
Yay sam did it! Thanks Sam!
*Bastille* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 2:19 am |
This is really cool, thanks sam, and sorry again for the whinge. I could have been a bit more thoughtful with the original comment... it was late, and Red Dwarf was on, thats bound to make one a Smeg Head. |
*Tango* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 8:39 am |
Red Dwarf is still in syndication on broadcast TV somewhere? I remember sitting down and watching the entire series at one point, I figured it was a relic of the past. |

*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Jul 27, 2010, 9:21 am |
OK im pretty tired, but where can this be seen ?
Ignore that, nice addition ..very nice |
*Bastille* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 10:42 am |
Yeh, we're a bit behind here, I think thats why they call it "down under" Theres some other new show on here at nights now too. This fresh, new comedy drama challenges the most intellectual minds our country has ever known with its deep plot lines ripe with intrigue. Its called The Goodies. |
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Jul 27, 2010, 11:46 am |
And we can now auto config our crew into our vehicles! Woopah!
*Bastille* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 12:19 pm |
Not sure if the specs checkbox works properly as the specs are displayed each time I log in. Going to the edit settings page, the checkbox is off, and rechecking the box on and off is necessary each log in to stop the specs display.
This is actually quite good, giving me the chance to look at this again and realise, its actually quite a nice feature. Edit: Setting up a squad, I had the specs off, on return, they were on. I had not changed the settings. But as mentioned, I think I'm used to it already. The Set Crew function is very cool. |
Marrkos Posted Jul 27, 2010, 1:29 pm |
I'm seeing this as well, except I have it turned off, and the checkbox on my Settings page reflects that. |
Marrkos Posted Jul 27, 2010, 3:53 pm |
Almost seems to be related to the session variable that controls the vehicle list.
I'm seeing the specs, even though my setting is to not show them, if I come back to the Vehicles page and it has been reset to 'Show by Town'. After setting it back to 'List All', the specs are shown again. |
*sam* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 4:40 pm |
Yeah, it's definitely the session variable not being set up right, I'll check now.
*Bastille* Posted Jul 27, 2010, 6:10 pm |
you guys and your big words, sessions, variables, sounds like a hippy physics party. |
