I'm doing a patch in the morning that will include several new types of creature, including some that burrow under the ground and others that jump! Offering new and varied ways to get eaten while you're out for a picnic in the Northern Desert..
Don't want to give them all away here as that takes away from the fun of meeting them, but here's two: A creature that we think evolved from a grasshopper. Can leap up to 30 feet in the air. Modelled and animated by Tinker. Nice work!..
Giant worm-like things – any soft terrain can be burrowed under by these nasties. They use their burrowing ability as a way to ambush their prey. These chaps generally consider cars to be just as tasty as peds:
Also giant spiders of various types, including hairy winter-loving ones and red lava-and-fire-immune ones. |

Djihani Posted Nov 29, 2010, 10:15 pm |
I want vehicle armor upgrade! Red Spider skin(scales?)!
Resistance to flames! Flames resistance could be relative to how much armor you have on a facing (relative to max) game balance? could make the armor sligthly weaker. |

Does this mean critters will start showing up in vehicular wilderness combats again? I thought that's been turned off ever since they were appearing crazy often back during some strange phase of the auroras? |

That is one of my favorite quotes from the "Firefly/Serenity" series! Another one my favorite quotes is in the episode, "Our Mrs. Reynolds" They are on a horse drawn wagon and get ambushed. Reynolds, dressed as a woman, says while pointing his pistol at the ambush leader, "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I WILL end you!" The western style of storytelling in a futuristic setting is fantastic! I wish they would continue that series.... But it's not to be! |

Ped equipment!
Bio - suits ! (less carry bulk, less armor, LESS radiation) Gasmasks! (reduced dexterity or gun skill, LESS radiation) EDIT: PEDS CLIMBING ONTO CARS! You know that old B movie where they have to climb onto rocks and cars (only helps a limited time) and kill huge burrow worm monsters with dynamite and trick them off cliffs! Pickups could have an ability to move at certain speeds with peds on the cargo bay. (=ped turrets ehhehehe) |

Oddly enough after I patched, My first wilderness travel encounter between SS and GW was against the Texan truckers. I said "who?"
I had to go look them up and for good reason, they are attached to Texan and I don't scout Texan. Strange to see a Texan gang a few thousand miles from their home town looking for trouble. lol |

Fifth Posted Dec 1, 2010, 7:00 pm |
They do appear during vehicle scouts, typically toward then end when several peds have been injured. |
*Tinker* Posted Dec 1, 2010, 7:59 pm |
yeah they do, I was asking if you could see them occasionally at the start and through the whole event if they don't run away. They can be neutral observers so to speak |
*sam* Posted Dec 1, 2010, 8:03 pm |
Good idea. That's kind of how I originally imagined it actually.
Would you need to get rid of them before looting could start? |
*Tinker* Posted Dec 1, 2010, 8:07 pm |
no, unles you pissed them off and they decided to retaliate |
*Rev. V* Posted Dec 1, 2010, 8:09 pm |
Can't imagine they'd be too interested in engines, weapons, etc.
They just want the meat........ |
Fifth Posted Dec 1, 2010, 8:12 pm |
Yes. Walking around trying to loot cars, pulling bodies out of them, etc, would be pretty hazardous if there were a couple of grasshoppers trying to eat you. I think they'd have tobe either gone or running away before looting could start. |
*sam* Posted Dec 1, 2010, 9:31 pm |
So we'd have to be careful not to make it tedious or too common.. |
Zephyr Posted Dec 1, 2010, 10:23 pm |
Yeah I think you really wouldn't want to start looting before all critters are either dead or fleeing. Perhaps use the "The remaining enemies are attempting to flee!" message to allow the players to end the scenario without having to hunt down one last grasshopper stuck on a fence somewhere on the map.
Unless of course the critters just don't ever flee.. hmm. |
Jose Bagg Posted Dec 2, 2010, 6:37 am |
just an idea, but maybe every once in a while, you go straight from the battle phase into a footsquad phase because your group got ambushed while looting. Destroy the critters and then you can enter loot phase. If you run away or die, no loot phase for you.

*goat starer* Posted Dec 2, 2010, 12:41 pm |
i love this .. would love it if sometimes your gang got hid during looting by animals or cars. start with peds out... the loot cars and yours set up in the set up circle.. mad scramble for poition, vehicles etc. |
*Bastille* Posted Dec 2, 2010, 12:55 pm |
I like my poition sunny side up
The Underking Posted Dec 2, 2010, 1:14 pm |
Looting should be optional then, would really be a bother to be forced into a loot footsquad fight just to end up getting 16 damaged tires and some scrap metal to show for it because you turned the other cars into chaff |
Jose Bagg Posted Dec 2, 2010, 6:43 pm |
Oh come on, footsquad fighting is fun. Return events aren't optional, this shouldn't be either. |
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Dec 2, 2010, 7:26 pm |
I only loot full vehicles engines over 85% my gangers just jump in wipe the brains of the seat and away they go.
*Tinker* Posted Dec 2, 2010, 8:09 pm |
Aren't most creature timide and shy of noisy gun fight? Would there not be a good chance to be away from them by the time the scout ended? (and would they not scatter away?) I think if there were a couple left at loot close by they wouldn't necessarily attack, if there were much more then yeah think it's credible. If we have to fight every creature on the map to finish the event, the novelty would wear off fast. True a few of the stupid kind might be more problematic than the others. |
Bandulu Posted Dec 2, 2010, 8:24 pm |
Not sure whether this is the way it is supposed to work, but on a travel (courrier run) between Elms and SS, I encountered the jurassic scuttlefish.
I escaped but the server wouldn't close, I rejoined to see what was going on and the raiders that were chasing me were still fighting the creatures. S282571 Server is still up and some of the creatures have 0% activity but don't seem to die. |

I kinda like the idea of bugz attacking during loot phase..might get people to speed up!
Whilst on the subject of loot I reckon that when u strip a car its bitz should not be available until strippers next turn. |

Jake Nikodemus Posted Dec 8, 2010, 8:18 am |
This sounds like a very interesting idea... Having to actually walk a ped out to loot a car while the threat of ambush is present.... |
Jake Nikodemus Posted Dec 8, 2010, 8:27 am |
I had a similar issue, s282014. A few of the crabs would not drop down to 0%, nor was I able to harm them further. It seemed as though they were shielded by being half in the ground. When I realized that I would not be able to damage them further, I looked to find other reasons the combat would not end, even though all enemies were demo'd. Turned out that there were a few of these beasties hanging around underground out of sight, and one was actually chasing a fleeing enemy. While I enjoyed the hazards the creatures presented, it was annoying to have to wait for the creatures to decide to end the combat. |
*Tinker* Posted Dec 8, 2010, 1:27 pm |
s282014
Yeah that looked long and bloody, saw you hitting repeatedly one and not harming it, it was at 15% health Also they didn't seem to catch much splash damage nor exploding mines at all Also saw a npc ped shoot one repeatedly that showed 0% activity |
John Abaddon Posted Dec 8, 2010, 3:37 pm |
+1 It's starting to get real annoying when I want to go on a quick scout and this adds another half hour or so (on top of no loot) because I have to kill all of the creatures. This happened 3 times in a row to me yesterday, and quite honestly is making me not want to scout anymore if this is what every scout is going to be like... |
John Abaddon Posted Dec 8, 2010, 3:39 pm |
...And not to mention the annoyance of trying to shoot at a creature as it is covered in other creatures dead bodies, simply making you waste ammo trying to kill them... |
*sam* Posted Dec 9, 2010, 4:10 pm |
I'm guessing the problem is with worms and slavebugs? These are the two types of creature that I had marked as "likes to attack cars", and I think I made them attack too often. Changing the calculations now.. |
John Abaddon Posted Dec 9, 2010, 4:24 pm |
Yes Sam, I believe you are correct. But not only do they attack too often, there are A LOT of them spawning. At least twice on two vehicle solo scouts, coming upon 3 to 4 NPC cars, there were at least 8 to ten of them. And I think it only took 3, maybe 4 hits before the 8 points I had on the top of my Apache was reduced by 7 points, and had penetrating damage hit one of my gangers (luckily it was only a minor 4% wound)... I love the concept, but they shouldn't be even more difficult and time-consuming to kill than the enemy NPC vehicles you come across in a scout, IMO. |
*sam* Posted Dec 9, 2010, 4:27 pm |
I'll take another look at the numbers spawning.
I agree with your opinion, my goal is to make the game more interesting/fun but never to make it tedious! |
JS Posted Dec 9, 2010, 5:21 pm |
I saw this on a GW scout, had probably 20 spiders spawn. When they started to stack up the bodies it became a chore. Fortunately the enemy AI helped out as it had no trouble targeting th live ones in the pile. |

Duke Dangerfield Posted Dec 23, 2010, 5:04 pm |
maybe a mass bug spawn during scout would be an event where you and the enemy team up to kill the common enemy, with possibility of not fighting each other after/ gaining some rep with faction you ended up fighting together with, if you fight together well? this could apply to enemy (er) gangs as well as bugs I suppose. really just trying to befriend the mutants so I can finally get me a psi (when will I get one? I have so many muties)
bugs could provide some kind of loot, cars or ped weapons they have in their "inventory" (digestive system). or even be cut up for better food! finally some meat! as far as looting goes, i like the idea of ending a multiple wounded/dead scout and being scared to loot because... the wolves smell blood! etc. agree that having any bug event become tedious is, well, tedious. |
Duke Dangerfield Posted Dec 23, 2010, 5:09 pm |
on that topic, could enemy peds be looted as food for places where food is scarce (cannibalism is just pragmatism, post apocalypse =) ) or their heads looted as something you could keep as a short term morale booster or hell something you could throw out the car towards the end of a scout to demo the other team faster? or fired out of a car cannon and splattered across their windshield?
sorry NPCs, feeling a little barbaric today! |
