Laura Heath

We`re paying tribute to the legendary Laura Heath, a renowned gunner from Mambas Maniacs.
------------------------------------------------
Who?

Come on gazette reports, this is the best you can come up with in 2 weeks?

I can understand the creative juices can run dry at times, but even simple things like:

“Joe smhow here reporting for the gazette”

“The political situation is heating for the next council vote, here’s the rundown on who’s running”

Joe1
Joe2
Joe3

Etc..

“Have your votes in by xx time.”

Or

“We’ve seen some pretty sweet paint jobs recently, here’s what we’ve seen on the road lately”

(Pictures of new skins from joe1 posted)

(Pictures of new skins from joe2 posted)

Etc..

Do I need to join the gazette team and crack some heads to get the creative juices flowing just a little bit? lol

Hell, even a reposted story from 3 years ago is better than what's been seen in the gazette these past few months. At least the new players would have something interesting to read.

Some nice ideas.

Keep cracking those skullz :)

I agree totally. I have checked the gazette quite a bit and wonder why I did every time. The idea is a good one, but there needs to be more interesting and relevant. A custom skin column would be awesome, there are some really talented skinners out there and this would be a little more motivation to make more. Plus it gives people a chance to see some of the more rare custom skins that are usually not thrown out into group scouts.

I also believe that we can replace the bulk of the page (listed deaths) because we have the Hall of Fame. That gives plenty of space for other articles, stories, pictures, etc. I think the Gazette should be something that people want to see when it comes out.

Crack my head if you wish, i was the only person editing the gazette for a long while, i tried my hardest to get members to send me pictures, stories etc to no avail, so i gave up ( only so much i could do solo ).

LF i am sure Sam will give you editorial rights if you ask, as apart from myself no other members of the editorial team are constant players at present.

Go back to july/august 56 for the last input i made into the gazette, you will see i attempted then to get subscriptions

most members probably do not even realise i was running solo for the gaz'.

I can't do a story on you every week

Grogs done heaps for the gaz, and as he says its not easy to gather together material. Many have great ideas and intentions and then you find they have forgotten about it the next week. I tried to find the 'Gazette wants you thread a few times to add to it as I didn't have many ideas and not sure if people wanted to read my race updates, but never came up in a forum search. Looked through about 20 pages in various sections of the forum.

I like the obituaries section, a good regular in the Gaz. Having a weekly ganger and so forth is nice. I like the idea of some news being in there too. Such and such gang did this, they and them are now at war, maybe even some event IDs and of course pictures. All this stuff is in the forums, maybe just a small headline and then links to forum pages to find that months important news that most need to keep up on. Continued on page 3, where page 3 is actually a page in the forums. trolling the forums to keep in the loop can get boring at times, this would make it easier.

The Election post would be a good one, I don't even know whos running myself.

I almost never read the Gazette.

More detailed league/rally coverage would be nice.

I'd be interested in editing it too, adding a summary of forum discussions to it would be cool.

Why does the weekly ganger never even top their own gang in the skill they are being highlighted for?

Back in the early days of the Gazette, I had a solo run of a few months. While I eventually ran out of time, ideas were always easy to come by. Take a look at the early issues (from sep/oct 2042) for some inspiration from me, Badger, JD, etc, on how to create content when there is none ;)

(Comic montages, Gazette-run events, extended obituaries on demand, question columns, track analyses, road tales and reports, etc. A few examples from my pieces would include: The Darkwind Gazette First Bi-Annual Dream Event Vote, and the resulting report, Stop the presses: The Empire Strikes!, The Road To Firelight, the obituary for Tom `The Mongoose` McEwen, New race tracks unveiled in Elmsfield and Gateway, Pirate Killah of the Year, and Camps - freedom, or the first signs of a dictatorial elite?

Badger's Ask Crabby columns is also an excellent example, and as funny as it gets. JD's The World of Evan: According to Basher is another excellent example of drawing on the richness of Darkwind to create content.)

I hope to be back soon, hopefully with time enough on me hands to step up as the editor-in-chief of or at least major contributor to the Gazette. Ironically, my masters in journalism, and working as a journalist, is what has kept me from contributing to the Gazette ;)

As long as the Gazette consists solely of non-profit member contributions, be glad for what you get. As there is no obligation or material motivation to write for the Gazette, every line written is a pleasant surprise.

The Gazette is written in an in-universe style, and unless Sam wants that to change, a list of OOC forum discussions would be hard to fit in, and break the purpose and immersion of the Gazette.

As long as it is written in an in-universe style, spotlighting creative contribution to Darkwind in the Gazette is a splendid idea :)

The current problem is not lack of space, but lack of writers, contributions, time, etc. When there is enough material, "Death's Door" is pushed far down. Go back to old issues of the Gazette (back to sep/oct 2042, Evan time, and onward, not just a few issues) to see how it appears when properly fleshed out.

And no, I am not bashing you Grog. I didnt know it was a one man show. And in that case you are doing great. But we have enough people around that we can improve it, if not have a few other members help out. Maybe there should be a forum thread on "news-worthy" happenings. The more information to work with the better. It is hard to get enough info for a story on your own- different people that play at different times, lots of people solo even when they are on, and most things that happen arent known to others if you dont tell them.

Maybe we could also have a Spotlight on Fresh Faces section. We have new people coming in all the time. And once the DW bug attacks, we find them on more and more. A good way to introduce them to others is a little section in the gazette.

I appreciate the work you have put in Grog, and anyone who helps you out. I just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in, and try to make it succeed.

These old issues are great. Most of this stuff seems to be written by random members of the community, for nothing! Not even a handflamer (now theres some heads for you to crack foul, leave poor grog alone and beat up those lousy community types ;)). Lots more stories and scout reports, heaps of car reviews, Most addicts (theres a must), More League reports, Longo and Doc with 5000+ bounties, mad mike megas from 2046. When did the VINDICATORS learn to use punctuation, and while on the subject of punctuation, was Spanky a LUNATIC before he was a KLINGON? All this and much much more in the wealth of history that is the DW Gazette.

This might be a bit of an ask, is there anyway possible to have a drop down menu for previous issues rather than having to cycle through all the issues to go back to early days? Maybe just by year? I have to click back 50 times to go back to 2046 now that I have navigated away from the gazette (lifes so hard).

The DW Gazette has ebbed and flowed.. it's a thankless task, to be honest - I have spent time at it myself on and off. Grog has been brilliant, and other have pitched in for times too. I don't think it has much readership, even when issues are packed with stuff, so most editors get bored after a while.

I'll add the drop-down list though, that makes good sense.

Nice one! Thanks for that.

Might get people reading the old issues, or at least looking at the pictures.

If you guys have any ' Role Play ' stories, Death Race reports, combats etc especially with screen shots ( HUD disabled ) i am only too happy to edit it and add to the gazette.

Just PM me the input you have, however small.

Full RP stories that you intend to add to the taverns could be placed in the gazette instead.

Throw me a hook and you might just get a fish

You just got a new member for the team gazette grog, I'll be your saviour ;)

Question though. Would a story on the RC elections be appropriate? Does it constitute as being 'in character'/'in the DW universe'?

I would follow on with ayonas advice, the gazette is used as a Role Play tool ( just look at all the issues ) bringing in game life breaks the idea of what the gazette is about and anyway once the next gazette comes out the election may be over, same goes for adding asnything from the forums, unless Sam states other wise keep it to RP stories etc. PM me if you need codes for adding pictures etc.

In the early editions theres lots of really simple stories. Doesn't have to be paragraphs of stuff, just some info like the news. I think it works really well. And the Crabby section.

I was considering 'replicating' the crabby section, but I feel it's not within my rights to do so.

Hmm, this

Doesn't have to be crabby, but maybe similar would be welcome, and most acceptable.

Call it Mr Potato Head, Im easy :)

Hmm, can't inform people here that the latest issue is soon out. I lack the power.

Even though I'm fed up with the game and have about as much interest, anymore, as I have my whole life for getting shot...Bast' knows he can count on me for a story.

Drop me a PM on anything...it only takes me about 10 minutes to do a short story like the ones I've done before.

I like writing about the genre. I can do events too. Send me a #, I'll watch, take notes, write.

Peace.
