My friend made me a DVD of movies he had downloaded and included a movie titled "A Serbian Film" after giving me a taste of the opening minutes.

I was unfortunately fooled by the off-color but amusing introduction... I was not so fond of what followed. In a few words, you should not watch this movie no matter what unless you want some of the scenes indelibly burned into the nether regions of your brain.

I've seen some shocking film in my time (Irreversible, Cannibal Ferrox) but this movie redefines horror... and not in the way you might think. I'm not talking about boogymen or evil spirits: this movie has some of the most appaling examples of plausible human suffering you can think of.

---

The director of the movie claims it is a commentary on the recent tortured past of Serbia, that it represents the brutal, heartless control exerted by the elite over the miserable Serbian population but I can't agree.

If you have friends that would like to show you this movie, I strongly suggest you steer clear. I thought I'd watch just about anything but this proved me wrong.

I wish I had never watched it.

I haven't seen it. I can't say I actively seek out disturbing movies... This one fooled me into thinking it might be absurd and a little raunchy: it was much worse than that.

It felt like a cold winter night in an insane war criminal's head.
