Alpha Dog Escape..., (Oh so close)

It's late and the three local members of the Paceys Raiders are huddled on stools by the bar, when in staggers a familiar face.

"Steve, what the fu...?" exclaims Earl Ruiz, before being cut off by the reply from Steven McCoy, "Get me a beer!"

The figure entering the bar looks a bit of a mess. The sleeve of his tattered and singed leather jacket formed into a crude sling, supporting his left arm at an unusual angle. Road grime and dust cake his young features, but are ignored as he quaffs the beer offered him in one long drag.

"How the hell did you get here?" asks Ed McCleary, the gang's trucker.

"Did the guys in the Pike make it out?" queries Steve. Seeing his three comrades nodding, he continues, "So, you know about the Alpha Dog event that new guy entered?". More nods. "Well, we patched up what was left of that Alpha following the barbeque..."

Steve signals for another drink and necks another large gulp.

"I really didn't think we'd make it outta Firelight. We had no weapons, and just a one-litre engine in that stripped-out tin can. Four members of The Inquisition latched onto us as soon as we left town. The little Alpha didn't do bad though and we pulled away from most of them, and even dodged a pickup that appeared ahead of us, but a damned Dervish was still gaining on us, even at 140! We almost lost it a couple of times, then I saw in the mirror that the Dervish had vaulted."

Another long drink drains Steve's glass and another round of beers appears.

"We were doing alright until we ran into a bunch o' Desert Scorpions in the volcano lands. They gave us quite a chase, but we we're leaving 'em behind nicely, until a Sunrise came at us from over a hill in front. Rockets were flying all around us, and we took several hits and rolled. I really thought we were gonners, but somehow we made it. The car was a mess, armour shot to hell and one tyre gone. We'd lost half of the spare tyres as we rolled, and ended up with ORs on the front an' regulars on the back. Bloody car was driving like a wheelbarra' then."

Just when we thought we were home safe, those bastard Scorpions re-appeared. I swear it was the same Sunrise again! The sides of the car were shot to buggery so Danny had no choice but to drive right at it. The git just jinked right and left and blasted us with more rockets. We rolled down the hill and I thought we might be ok, 'til I looked across at Dan - he was covered in blood and oil, and it was obvious he and the engine had both had it. So I legged it. Last thing I heard was the whizz of a rocket."

"I came to some time later. I guess they'd thought I was dead. Danny's body was lying near a puddle of oil, so I did what I could to make sure the rad bugs didn't get to feast on him..."

Raising his glass, Steve sighs, "To Daniel Plumlee, a damn fine driver and a good mate. Rest in peace".
