Heya Mike - been missing ya.
Yeah, I have Win 8 and it crashes on exiting looting every time. When I used Win 7 it only happened 1 of 2 maybe 1 of 3 times. I have never heard of a way to minimize this problem yet - - would love to hear it if there is one. |

didnt crash when exiting looting on a gates encounter
*Boonwolf* Posted Dec 10, 2013, 9:02 am |
never used win7 but when I started using win8 I have a lot more crashing. seems to come in waves some days nearly ever event and others nothing.
having other programs running at the same time seems to compound crashing of DW. (from what I have noticed) |

drop windows down to 16 bit depth on the graphics, and disable all windows themes to leave windows looking like win95. This helps a lot, but leaves the computer looking like crap to do anything besides playing the game.

Advice from Xaniax very sound - turn off fullscreen - although fullscreen no longer autocrashes it seems to have issues...reduced crashes by over 50%. Should be able to jig resolution to match screen size - only diff is having X n minimize shown in window(kinda handy anyway)
Quit/Exit to keep preferences so u don't have to change it everytime u log in. Still can't use buttons despite varios browser tweaking but running much more solidly now. |

Sorry! I guess we're increasingly trying to run old-school tech on new platforms, it's hard to avoid this. The Torque game engine was from about 2001-2002 originally

I'm guessing Sam did a server side java update. After my last java update things ran a bit weird and seem fine now. If so, thanks for taking the time to straighten that out. It has felt more fluid and maybe a bit more stable the last few days when i've had time to play.

this is exactly why progress is bull####.
if we were all still on windoez xp... |

not that it helps but when I ran the compatability wizard on DW from my Win8 rig it suggests running as Windows Vista SP2...which is weird as last time I ran DW on Vista it sucked badly.
EDIT: Furthermore DW won't run at all under basic Win8 Vista SP2 emulator...at least not on my rig. Think i got it running as XP but didnt solve any problems. |

you have to turn on compatibility in the exe file, darkwind.exe is not the game, it is just a loader.
I'm glad you warned about 8.1's limit to vista sp2. I almost made the mistake of installing 8.1 today. ![]() just used lobby.exe as a example of what I expected your compatibility list to look like. Plus you could use oracle virtual machine to run a whole other operating system, inside your operating system, and even devote cores to run each OS in dedicated mode. So for example. I could have 4 cores dedicated to windows 7, 1 core dedicated to windows 98, and 1 core dedicated to Unix. |

Technology is great, the trick is knowing how to make it roll over and play fetch |

Java is only used for the patching program. Not run on the server, and not run as part of the core game client. |

Well I'm not sure about the crashing but i can now issue ladder events and use popups from the lobby UI. Cheers Grimm hadn't thought about going about it this way...not sure why choosing the same settings via the right click compatability wizard options didn't do the same thing? BTW I've found Win8.1 more stable and with less field selection issues...I havn't been stuck in comms watching my crew die since the whopping 4GB plus Win8.1 patch(which took me several days and multiple reattempts to download via wireless) |

So far so good...haven't even crashed on loot exit today <touchwood>
Grimm Sykes Posted Feb 2, 2014, 4:40 pm |
I meant on the website. me and a couple other players had problems with dropdown menus working right. either the menu wouldn't come up, or some options would not highlight, which all started after the last java update on our computers. |

Buttons started working again after another java update about same time that I configged to XP SP3 - think those settings allowed Java to update properly - just guessing - crashed a few times on event exit now but all in all much happier - long live XP! |
