Are carrier vans just a bad idea

or do you just need a very high scout to have any chance of moving them between town. I have gotten ambushed badly twice at Forever Yellow Skies with bad results.

No... They're a VERY bad idea.

I use em for ballistics training behind a line of other cars. 2 x CGL and tons of ammo and space for loot to bring home. Because they are crap the CR is very low so doesn;t add much to the overall squad.

Naturally if it goes pair shaped it's gonna die, so don;t let that happen!

I used 3.2L pu's till I got some BPU's, best to go that route. If you need any can get you some. Think theres a few in the Hollowground car lot for $1 each.

Thanks for answers. I have been using 3.2L pu's with decent results, but got destroyed last night with a van. I was hoping to get to FL on my own, not as cargo. :(

PA, can I actually go to the camp and purchase stuff if I am not a member?

Edit: remove possibly offensive word.

Have to apply for membership first, if you not hauling cargo best to go with a voy.

Voys are garbage.

what is the purpose of the travel?  Taxi?  Cargo? Courier?

The preferred chassis will change based on purpose.  Her is a small list of things I've used for cargo:

Cargo
3.2L A armor Pickup (Suspension Length 90 Stiffness 110)
3.2L A armor Estate (Susp Length 105, Stiff 105)
3.2LV8 A armor Landrunner (Susp Ln: 103, Stiff 98)
3.2LV8 A armor BPU (no adjustments)

---The PU is decent anywhere.  Occasionally Turtles and bounces but player skill will combat this.  Decent Accel.  NOT safe to drive to FL in but anyplace else is fine
---Estate carries 5 more cargo than a similarly set PU but takes increased damage if hit.  doesn't turtle as easily as the PU.  similar Accel to PU.  Also NOT safe to drive to FL in.
---Landrunner turtles a little more than the PU but holds vastly more cargo.  Handles terrain much better than any car ive used but requires more attention to details when cresting hills (ie: player experience to prevent rolls and turtles).  NOT safe for a FL run.  Excellent accel
----BPU is probably the best for a FL run of any car.  However it bogs down in sand and this makes it NOT safe for the areas near SS and EF unless you are skilled at low speed escape tactics.  Somewhat slower accel than other chassis without exposing the engine by using a 5L.  Vast amount of cargo space.

Taxi and Courier vehicles differ from my cargo preferences. I can detail those if you want as well.

I was doing a courier mission with a high bulk. I will probably use a pickup. I drive those fairly decently.

For travel, I use mostly a pho. I don't tend to taxi my characters much, mostly doing scout training and some couriermissions. I have a Merc I use between SS and Elms occasionally.

I used to use Flash cars a bunch stock suspension 25 unit tank 3.2L exposed. Low price and very forgiving when crashed, but may dance like the BPU. Has 20-25 open bulk (I forget for sure) but has range for SF or FL runs with full load. Will take off like a rocket.

Carrier Vans are great.... as small storage units in camps (minus wheels and engine). Use them for driving/carrying cargo at your own risk!

I really want to like the Flash, but it always dances on me at a bad time. When I get a real driver, I may see if I can put one to better use.

I prefer a marley to a flash myself. Ran one w/no weapons on it from FL to BL long time ago. Had no tires left when I arrived, but made it.

As for Voy's being garbge, I have to disagree. I've run 3.2L B-armor voy's all over evan, only got jacked once that I can remember, in an ambush on fingers map.

I ran A armored V8 Voys, only times I got caught were due to my own miscalculations/mistakes and I got out of some incredibly difficult ambush spawn w/ them too.

I hear 4L Voys are great too but I'd rather save the weight and of course the exposed engine by running a V8. Regular 3.2 should work great, too.

EDIT: Cargo vans and box vans have never gotten me anything but killed. I will loot them but will never, ever drive them if I can avoid it.

voys are great. Some of mine are 16 years old and still going strong. 4L or v8. Can get caught on rough terrain, but Ive also taken those things in the roughest terrain evan has to offer. Great for ped scouting.

I took a van from elms to BL for Arizona once, then I find out she wanted a hood ornament, heh, coulda used a voy.

Other than that, Vans can carry lots of stuff, they are good at it. Use them for that and you will be happy. Any cargo vehicle should be guarded, well.

Balistics carrier, great. Holds lots of bullet shields, ahh spare drivers too. I'm sure JS can tell you all about a legendary carrier van, he probably uses it to hold his legendary spatulas.

Since my best courier strategy has been to run like h3ll, i will stay away from vans.

As for small cars, I like the handling on the Cadrona best (at least in races), but have not taken one in the wild yet. I will look at the Marleys more.

I use my carrier vans with A-armour and a 3l rotary or V8 usually as a support vehicle or lootmobile and very very rarely as a courier(usually as a one-way hauler to camp to be broken down on arrival) and with this fitout they are still a very very bad idea! :cyclops:

Use a boxvan instead it's a much more stylish way to die and they look more like a mausoleum when you've...er...finished using them....

If you like Cadronas (or Caddies as I call 'em) I would suggest a sonic, whilst they are light and get knocked around like a ping-pong ball they are fairly tough.

The two NPC builds you find in the wild have RL and HMG but I would not suggest either of these as they require a 1L engine to allow them to have reloads(the NPC ones dont pack reloads) so if you are going to run them as a 1 seater i would suggest going with an MMG, with a 1.2L engine you get a single reload.

If you want to run them as a 2 seater you will have to choose a 20 bulk weapon - I would suggest a GG.

As I am a bit of a hoarder and have a soft spot for compacts i have half a dozen and I would be happy to sell one to you for $7...if you are interested send me a PM and I'll list one for you.

It's been a while since we did an all compact scout...keen fellaz? *Looks around for that bugnutz crazy Ninjamonkey*

v12 box van ftw. rear hmg/md 1 driver, 1 gunner to reload md or shoot if they get close. massive cargo space. nuff said. ;)

also ran a bus a lot, but there are some places where it just gets stuck, especially on some of the elms maps.

a arm v8 voys are king as long as what you want to carry fits. can't recall ever losing one, and i've taken them all over the south a *lot*.

5l bpus also great as long as what you want to carry fits. should be able to run away from anything pretty easy. have lost a couple, but invariably due to my own stupidity (leaving town with bad/no tires, trying to get across the water in via rupta and hitting a rock underwater, etc).

most important thing is knowing the spawns and where the best escape routes are, and that just takes experience.

Sonics are the best Compact scout car - they are still terrible but they are the toughest by far

As for a cheap cargo hauler the 3.2 PU is king - upgrade to A armor and 3LR if you want to improve it. Put a roll cage on it and you can do pretty much anything. They can climb like crazy. I've never had one turtle, but they do occasionally tumble (but this barely slows them down) ;)

Thanks everyone for the answers. I will definitely agree, 3.2L pu with A armor has not disappointed me hauling goods.

I am going to try a Voyager as a Taxi and see how that works out.

I found a fun use for carrier vans and even built fame with them. 2 Napalm guns each side, 3.2L, 8 crew 8 reloads and 5 bulk to spare. park it someplace out of line of sight and fire one side, when it's reloading turn around and fire from the other side. then you got 7 loot drivers to bring cars back with. Give all the crew molotovs so they can get out on foot and increase the amount of ballistics in use. get 8 flaming puddles per turn for only 116CR

I have used vans with CGLs, NGs and even Mortars, great support/ballistics trainers. I have also run them with 4 MDs, lots of fun but dangerous, even have added HFOJ and FOJ at times.

I use a hotrod with a 3.2LV8 in it as a ganger taxi, holy CRAP are those things quick!!!

You can run from ANYTHING.
Don't skimp on the armour though, you don't get much.

I was looking at some of the larger courier missions. I just don't have skill to run in a van, and don't have resources to make a convoy. For newb, seems like a van is a bad idea.

I ran vans for a few months with nape and MD and one escort pho. They worked out ok for the northern triangle. "
Don't forget your reloads"
