I'm playing for 5 days now and just wonder at wich point i need more fuel units then 2.

I found the Formular (135000x/m where x is the amount of fuel units and m is the vehicle`s weight, in pounds lbs.).

So i do the math an take my borrowed Antagonist with his 6521 lbs. :

135000 x 2 fuel units = 270000 / 6521 lbs = 43.60 miles

Now i have heared that newbies do scouting up to 50 miles (with Help of some Veteran) so the Fuel isnt enough for one way.

So my question is for which missions i will need more fuel units? I don't wana get lost out of nowhere ;)

P.S.: Sry for my bad english

When you are making changes to your vehicle, at the bottom of the screen it will always tell you how far your vehicle can travel based on current tank size. So you don't need to do the math unless you want to figure out what size tank will be enough for a travel to a neighboring town.

You will always get different opinions from players on tank size and scouting distances. The further you scout out, the easier the gang you could face. You usually get a return encounter, but that possibility changes on scout skill and current town rep.

The closer to town you scout will usually give you a harder gang to face. But, you also have a better chance to spawn a gates map. That means you only have to do the one encounter and can allow you to loot the maximum amount you can carry and drive back without risk. That is the biggest plus for a new player because it helps you sell things that will cover cost of repairs, additional gear to buy and any weekly gang and storage fees.

One other item to consider is the smaller the tank, the more space you have to add more or bigger weapons, more reloads or additional characters. These are valuable to have for newer players as well.

Main key point is scout to your comfort and skill level, not from opinions that tenured players do. If your guys can't shoot accurately or you run out of reloads, that larger tank just might cause you some casualties or make you a liability during a group scout. Once you develop a crew skilled enough, then play around with different vehicle setups, but you need to keep your guys alive to do this.

In theory, you won't ever get stuck out in the wilderness without fuel as you can only scout away for half the distance of your fuel travel maximum.
I suppose if you're really dumb you could carry extra fuel to scout further, have it destroyed in battle, and obliterate all enemy vehicles so that you cant syphen fuel from loot cars!
However, i'm not dumb enough to have done this- so I'm not sure ;)

I might try that, bring an expendabke car full of cans and leave it in the desert.
Doubt anything happens though

My cars all have a 2 unit fuel tank except when travelling.

The only time I have had larger was when I was driving to and from Gateway to buy Apaches and transport them back to SS.

Then again, I only have a few months of playtime (with a few months off in the middle).
