And what looks like to be a bit of a RP community. Anyway, my biggest question is how many people still activity play?

I have only been here for less than 6 months, and like you I am a fan of table top games as searching for Car Wars related material found me here. The perma-death is a hardcore feature which gives the game an edge like no other. Also many players here are role players for sure. I don't know how many still activity play, but the longer I am here the more I think there are many more players in the back round running the camps and duties of Evan then we realize.
