Darkwind
Client issues, I hear music but that's it.

I fire up the client and log in and the screen flashes black for a second, then I hear music for a few minutes followed up with the whole "Dark Wind has ecnountered a problem, sorry for the inconvience" with the option to send error report.

I'v dug around the forums, and I cant find any topics that provide a fix.

Heres my system specs

Windows XP Home Edition SP 1
HP Intel Pentium 4, 1.3 ghz
Navidia 5500 (something like that)

I'm a old hand at darkwind and I would love to play again, help me out!

The first thing I'd check is that your graphics drivers are up to date.

If you can post the contents of console.log (from the root darkwind folder) that might help too...

I'm pretty sure I'm all updated, I'll put a few good portions of the log into here, I tried copy and pasting the whole thing and the IE browser froze. Attaching it won't work either.. Anyways

It is a video drivers problem:

Well I just updated my graphics driver. Now I get a error saying "Error allocating virutal memory"

I think the update got rid of the previous problem, I'll check the console log and look for that "open gl driver" thing. See if it's detecting it. I'm assuming it is because now the problem is memory.

by the way, I just updated my drivers and it still says Open GL not detected in the console log. How do I fix it?

If I do recall well (but I may be wrong), the Error allocating virtual memory is related to Open GL.
Try running in DirectX/D3D instead.

Oops, missed that.

If you can't access the options panel in the client, there is a pref file to be edited.
Should be (from memory) in darkwind full/client/pref.cs

Not bad.  ;)

Set D3D to "1" and opengl to "0".

You might also try setting Darkwind to use DirectX rather than OpenGL by editing darkwind/client/prefs.cs in a text editor.

You'll see a whole load of video settings something like this:

Code:
1
2
3
4
5
$pref::Video::allowD3D = "1";
$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "1";
$pref::Video::appliedPref = "1";
$pref::Video::clipHigh = "0";
$pref::Video::d...

Ouch - as an addict of this game I hate for anyone to say that...

I use a Mac, so I don't have these issues, but I'm sure it can be fixed...

On Mac, there's nothing to "install," just download and run. Do you have to "install" it on Windows? If so, have you tried a clean install after updating the drivers?

From what you have been posting about the prefs, it seems your video card is recognized as a Radeon 9800 Pro.
I don't have such problems with this card myself.

Could you report which drivers versions you are using?

Oh, your right...  Hmm

I'll have to find out, but as soon as I find out, I'll throw down a reply.

I didn't think there was chance I'd be able to play again but I guess all the possible problems have not been diagnosed yet.

Hopefully I'll be able to play again.

I used DOS and a few debug commands which should show me what kind of video card I have.

The text dump says NVI (Nvidia) and DIA TNT2 Pro VGA

I have a Nvidia Riva TNT2/TNT2 Pro

Version?.... 2.9.5.8 - Driver Date: 7/2/2001

ouch an old TNT2 card. i think those things are to slow to run dark wind.

I am having the same problem. I do have several questions. Two are for you specifically, while the others is for the entire forum.

1. Sam's quote is incomplete. Where can I find the full text? I want to try to run in DirectX, but part of the instructions are missing.

2. According to the console file of myself and the thread creator, D3D and OpenGl are not detected. Forgive my ignorance, but how does changing D3D to 1 and OpenGl to 0 help that? I'm not trying to be mean; it's just that I'm confused about how that would work. Are D3D and DirectX the same?

3. I went to edit the pref.cs file in notepad, but realized that if I save the changes, it would be in a .txt format. Would that make any difference? If so, what do I use in order to save in a .cs format?

4. In the pref.cs files, I noticed that a specific driver is listed. However, it is not my driver. Should I change it?

BTW, my driver is a fully updated ATI Radeon Xpress 1150.

You need to edit the $pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "1"; line so it reads $pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "0";

If you're seeing this:

"OpenGL" display device not found!
"D3D" display device not found!

then yes you're right that forcing it to use D3D won't fix anything.. it must be a drivers problem.

and yes, DirectX and D3D are indeed the same thing.

the format is the same; if you save it as .txt then simply edit the filename to change it to .cs, afterwards

The item in prefs.cs is probably just a default, and your computer never managed to run long enough to change it, I think. Changing this setting in prefs.cs will have no effect anyway, AFAIK.
