the boasting that mac is free of malware is over...
mac owners bragged how good the mac was and more people are buying them. all that has done has invited the malware writers to include macs http://www.macnewsworld.com/story/55765.html |

*jimmylogan* Posted Jan 26, 2009, 6:30 pm |
Nice try Mike. That article is old.
There is a newer one out there that claims to be a "trojan horse virus" for the Mac, but it's basically an AppleScript file that does some things the average user wouldn't want done, but it does NOT self replicate and you MUST download and run it manually. This would be the same as downloading a batch file for a Wintel machine and running it and then saying "but I have a virus." JL |

that's where fun virus started on PCs. The virus writers will leave apple alone still until more and more are out there.
With OSX and windows getting more software bloat there will be a spot or two that the virus and malware writers will find that was left open, just bound to happen. probably a good reason why apple isnt being targeted with malware and such is because I think that malware writers are past the days of bragging on how many PCs their malware gets to. Now they bragg how big their swiss bank account grows when their malware rakes in cash. its about collecting money. PCs are still easy to get in (thanks microsoft). Apples require a bit more work but can be broken. Its simply the path of least resistance. The writers of the trojan mentioned hit 20K macs or more through a pirated copy of software. the trojan wont get outside anyone that doesnt copy the software but their will be more to come as more apples get connected to the net. In reality a PC user can say they wont get a virus by just being careful of what they do. I dont run any kind of security software. I scan the machine remotely or from another on the network and nothing so far.. I can say STAY VIRUS FREE WITH A PC. just boot up, just play darkwind, and you are fine! |

Apple will get to a point where they too are seen as a bloated corporate bad guy. They are even now making products to be disposable... ipods and such have a pitiful lifespan. Its a matter of time.
Some people attack Microsoft just to get the bad guy, not out of a desire for money. Time will tell... |

Its endless where I work. I use a Mac at school, take my files home and work on them at home on the pc. They're about the same anymore in my opinion. At least with the programs I use, I get just as many, if not more, "quit unexpectedly" crashes on the Mac. |

every computer is the same and every OS is the same. they all do the same thing, operate the computer.
bring back the days of the flashing cursor and the command to run a program. thats all we need for darkwind... change the boot up process to just boot darkwind and trhat'll be the end of it |

but do they do splash damage, i dont wont the underside of my chair catching fire from rocket attack, when they should be causing top damage to pc
lordbam Posted Jan 28, 2009, 12:23 pm |
if you want to do damage, write a Linux virus. 75% of the webservers run linux. If you succefully write a linux virus the internet would become useless. So why hasn't anyone done it? Easy: it is hard to bypass security on linux, and even then, becouse of all the distro's it will only work on a certain distro... I virus always exploits programming errors. The solution is not writing a virus scanner (like microsoft) but patching the holes. Until they learn that, you will always have crap installed on windows. |
||||||
Mad Mike Posted Jan 28, 2009, 4:45 pm |
the lastest craze was the fake antivirus and antispyware programs. its still going on and they are raking in millions.
these were not security holes but tricking people into inviting the program into the machine and taking over. I imagine it could affect any machine regardless of OS. I bet they just wrote it for windows because it was the easiest and would net the most money. |
||||||
*jimmylogan* Posted Jan 28, 2009, 5:15 pm |
Hey Mike - one last dig and I'll leave it alone - very tongue in cheek here...
They wrote it for Windows because Mac users know they don't have viruses anyway, so they'd never fall for such a transparent scam. JL |
||||||
Mad Mike Posted Jan 28, 2009, 7:57 pm |
ahhhh apple announced that it encourages people to run antivirus on their macs "to make it just one more step" that the malware writers have to circumvent. If a pop up came up like antivirus 2009 saying you need antivirus and masked itself as an "apple" product, I am sure someone will fall for it. Just not enough apple users now to make it worth it.
final note, are apple computers virus free? YES will apple always be virus free? NO will windows ever be virus free? NO WAY I believe the last link to whether a computer will always be virus free is the user. No matter how hard anyone tries to make an OS that can completely keep the machine clean will always have a weak link, the user. |

*viKKing* Posted Jan 29, 2009, 12:04 pm |
I run antivirus programs on my Macs, just to be sure Windows users I'm writing to won't get infected with a Windows dedicated virus that could pass through my mailbox.
DesolatorDan Posted Jan 29, 2009, 7:53 pm |
I've always been using Windows, and I'm a very heavy power user. I've only had ONE virus, that was on Windows 98 when I was 12 years old, only had to learn that lesson once. |
