Darkwind
Does the client work on 64-bit Vista

I'm failing miserably at getting this to work under 64-bit Vista.

I keep getting the "Unable to launch the Darkwind client application. It is likely that darkwindLobby has failed to update the game. More information will be displayed."

I tried both the 32- and 64-bit versions of the C++ runtime.
My Java is current.

Has anyone else got this to work? If so, how?

I don't run Vista (or Windows) but I have heard people say to run it "as administrator." Have you tried that?

Yeah, I'm the only one with an accouont in my computer, so I'm automatically administrator. But thanks for the tip though!

Well, well, well...

Inspired by your response I tried to force the game into administrator-mode by running it from the start-menu and choosing "Run as administrator", and presto! Works like a charm.

I made the mistake of thinking that I was automatically the administrator since I am alone on this computer. Clearly, it is not so.

thus why I went back to XP pro on my computers. Good ole vista assumes everyone does not know a thing about computers and should be protected from themselves by default. Hides all files, no administrative privlages, etc. I swear I almost threw my wifes new laptop with vista on it out the window.

Yeah, even if you *are* an administrator, you still need to run stuff "as administrator" in order to really be administrator.

Either that or disable user access control and get warned of your "security problem" every time you reboot.

Install darkwind in your documents and setting.
Then even in Xp a normal user can update Dark-wind.
Haven't tested this in Vista but it should work.

I just Bomb Vista back to the stoneage
UAC , indexing , restore , aero ,widgets , graphic embellishments, etc

Looks like windows 2000 by the time I am finished

Win7 is out in a few hours and the beta whistles along nicely in 512 meg ram on my netbook

Sam, you should be able to set ACLs fairly easily in your installer to allow the updater write access to the install directory. I don't recall precicely where in the MSI schema this is, but it's a very common thing to do.
