Tutorial Topics

We're going to work on a number of short youtube videos focused on specific tasks in the game. The tutorial will show the website and gameclient being used to perform the task, with a voiceover from the illustrious JD Basher.

What I envisage is a webpage with a list of topics: "How do I buy a car", "How do I go scouting", etc.

What I'm seeking here are suggestions as to what the topics would be. Here's some that spring to mind:

* How do I go scouting?
* How do I hire a car?
* How do I buy a car?
* How do I do a courier mission?
* How do I join a league event?
* How do I repair my car?
* OK, so I'm in the game. What now?

Great idea.  Reading the Wiki isn't as enlightening as actually seeing it done.  For the very VERY newbie, I suggest breaking it up into small bites of info.

Driving School:
A step by step on entering Driving School and how to operate the basic controls on the car.  End with how to enter a race for fun and profit.

Deathracing:
Explains and demonstrates various methods of assigning gunners to weapons, selecting targets, etc.

The Arena:
Explains and demonstrates how to use terrain to advantage.

What can I do in town?

- Break down of the functions of the Tavern, Store, Market, Hospital, Training Center... what am I missing?

What is a Camp?

- Basic overview of player camps. Not really a new player feature, but it's good to explain what it is - especially if the videos also serve as promotional bits.

I'd start by looking at the sort of questions that appear in game and in the forums first.

Joining a squad, getting two entries in an event, etc. I'd especially look at things that veterans tend to take for granted but that are minor enough that they're easily missed unless you ask - like the F2 and F3 keys for instance.

Some folks like videos, some folks like to read. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to get some re-use out of the voice-over scripts. The raw V.O. scripts would make excellent research material, and those of us so inclined would use them as a basis for some good reference topics.

It's a three-day weekend for us Yankees, and writing some help files for y'all is as good a break as any from my RealJob™.

Missions: the different kinds, how to accept them and accomplish them.

Pro events: how can I arrange to be in them?

Money: how do I get me some of that stuff?

Lets help Sam and Olena out by trying to keep this as easy as possible without them or me having to do too much work to accomplish this GREAT idea! Put your suggestions under the heading your idea pertains to AFTER you copy and paste OR just reply to the most recent one. If you use the 'reply' try to leave the headings bold like they are, easier to read. Just delete all the "quote] [/quote" at the start and end of your reply and add your ideas.

An overview of the client interface would be helpful, such as what is monitoring Town Gates, my scouting squad. etc... and also show typical usage of how to interact with both client and web. An example of this would be while you can register for a town event through the client there are times when you may want to register using the web.

In the game section

How to recruit and how it works. Also, how not to worry that you just lost the first 5 events you joined and got all your starting gang members killed because that's okay - it's part of the game (ie this game is somewhat hardcore so be prepared).

Oh, what you can and can not do as a non-subscriber. I had someone who thought that as a non-sub your guys don't develop their skills or what not. Clarifying the particulars like that would be good.

Also, some leagues require you register for them via the website. That wasn't explained anywhere I could find - I just figured it out myself.

How to take back a move before the turn is resolved - that is, because tab doesn't unsubmit a move, someone may think that once you submit, it's set. But you can actually click the button to undo it as long as someone else has not done so either.

Oh, one thing to keep in mind, by the way, is to avoid using lingo and general assumptions. New players and/or people not familiar with indepth car stuff will not know what it means to hook around something, what a bpu is, etc etc etc. It can be easy to explain things in terms you're familiar resulting in answers that don't really answer anything.

Likewise, explain things adequately. Just staying "Do this. That's the right way" doesn't help people understand why they're doing things or why they should do it that way.

While it's still fresh in my mind: Having the tutorial make me use the F1 key would have helped with retention of that info.

Also I was clueless about Alt-G until a friendly player tipped me off about that that. F2&3 would be pretty useful info for someone who dives into arena, I spent my first several matches blasting resigned cars. How to resign and exactly what that means to the gang would be a good one to focus a second of the brand new player's attention on as well, if it's in there I forgot it by the time I needed it.

I may have been told some of these things, but was too overwhelmed to hang onto them. A timely reminder whenever they become important would be good. Perhaps *closeable* tip bubbles (the talking head actually blocked my target info during one tutorial mission and I couldn't grab and drag the window) as well as the option to turn the tips I have mastered off at some point during the experience.

An interactive tutorial would be better than watching a video. The current driving tutorial is great, but there's nothing like that for scouting, participating in leagues, designing vehicles, managing characters and what skills do, doing missions, etc. I had to figure that stuff out on my own recently and I can tell you after three failed missions its not easy. Its kinda harsh on newbies who don't start with good scouts and tend to get overwhelmed on a scouting mission.

the point of the videos is to assist the new players out if they cant figure it out after having it explained to them as many times as they want then honestly they probably wont like the complexity of this game

Something on how to use Darkwind: Tactical would be nice. It took me a long time to figure out that you actually start it from the client and not from the web site, because it's listed under the "Events" on the web site. Just today I discovered I can use it (more or less) to try out car designs. I haven't found a way to set a side to be controlled by the AI though, so that greatly limits things.

Edit: I figured out that the driver and passengers aren't saved with the vehicle configuration in DW:T so even though I was adding pre-made designs, they didn't have anyone in them! After I added some people the AI became operational so that's cool.

Edit 2: Meh... For some reason the AI vehicles keep running away! What's the deal?
