The game should run on Vista, though we don't have access to this operating system to test it any further.

Yeah, best thing is just wait and see. We'll be able to deal with anything weird that happens- it's fine on XP.

well it downloaded on Vista fine but I keep getting Unable to Launch Darkwind Client Application from within the lobby...I will try to sort it out when I get back on Sunday...I know with some legacy games I needed to change the games exe file over to run as administrator to get them to run...I couldnt find any definitive exe file in the folders for Darkwind though...

Well, it sounds like Windows users are getting in trouble when they must use  a .zip archive. There should be a .exe installer in the download now.
When using a .zip archive, you need to create a new folder (or directory) where you want the game to be, then double-clik on the .zip archive and drag and drop the files within into the new folder.
Once done, double-click on the darkwindLobby.jar it will download the gameclient, as it is NOT provided in the download package.

I seem to remember you can extract the files from the.zip archive and select a destination when right-clicking on it, but I can't check ATM.

Hope it helps.

shouldn't that be just click-and-drag  double-clicking would open up the archive instead, no?

Also since XP (maybe 2k too not sure , never used it) admin rights seem neccesary on all exe files (virus scares and all that garbage) so that seems to be the likely problem right there....

if yer using winzip or winrar(which i highly recommend btw) right-clicking should get u an option to extract the archive to a folder that u can specify or it will auto-create and you can move at will...

I'm thinking we need forums for each operating system to discuss platform-specific problems.

I think this particular problem is probably as vikking describes: basically, if you run the lobby from inside the zip, then it is unable to do its patching- and the first thing it patches is actually the game client. So, either make sure you extract from the zip, not run from inside it, or else - and this may be simpler - download and use the setup.exe installer instead of the zip.

you could make the java check whether the other fles are present before patching

No, you have to move the files out of the .zip, so you have to open the folder and move them by hand.

Well XP is processing such files, so you don't need those programs.
I confirm the right-clicking will bring an option to extract files to somewhere you want them (just switched to XP mode).

I checked without extracting files out of the .zip archive, the java lobby is downloading the client.

...but the client is not in the folder... it is moved somewhere else, because it cannot be placed in the .zip file!

I meant, if you launch the lobby from inside the zip, windows copied it to a temp dir and launches it. you can put a check in the java client to see that the other files it needs are present in the same folder. if not then pop up a mesage explaining

Oh just wanted to add a note. I am running Vista X64 and I see the exact same behaviour.. Everything seems to patch fine, but when I try to launch the client I get the same message in the lobby window.

Xeno: make you have the latest OpenGL compatible drivers for Vista.
That was the problem.
You can also send us your console.log file located at the root level of the Darkwind folder.

xeno: the message you're getting is that it's unable to launch the game client, is that right?

Did you install from setup.exe or did you download the darkwindFull.zip and open that?

I have run it both ways and I still am getting the unable to launch darkwind client application fault...so it must be having trouble downloading the client when it is updating from the lobby application...

vudusmith: could you post the last lines of the console.log file here, please?
console.log is located into the darwkind full folder, beside the darkwindlobby.jar and other files.

vudu: also, can you list the contents of your darkwind root folder. Does it have darkwindClient.exe in it?

OK, it looks like the lobby failed to download darkwindClient.exe
This may be a Java permissions issue..

Do you notice, when you run the lobby and before you have logged in from its username/password window, whether it takes a few seconds and a blue bar moves across, saying 'downloading game engine' ?

For the moment, you should be able to manually add the missing file. If you download this:
http://www.dark-wind.com/gameEngine/darkwindClient.exe.zip

And unzip it into the same folder that you listed the contents of, then hopefully it will work for you.

We'll have to figure out something better however, otherwise the next time we update that file you'll have to manually get it again.

thanks guys...it worked when I downloaded the client...should I save the client to use if I have trouble with the next version or will the client exe change also...

thanks again...

if there are changes, the client will be deprecated and you won't be able to join... I don't see needs in keeping it.

Players generally never need to do a complete download again vidu, it's all patched automatically from the game lobby, at least when it works properly it is...

I'm hoping the other files will patch properly for you (new sounds etc.) when we add them. We definitely need to figure this one out. But for the moment you can play, that's the main thing ;)
