Darkwind
Graphics Drivers

Another common problem with Windows (especially Vista I believe) is that it doesn't always come with proper OpenGL-supporting graphics drivers. Make sure you have the latest drivers for you graphics card installed.

can u also put the system requirments cause i'm not sure if my computer is fast enough and also how much memory the grafic card needs
*sam*

The main requirement would be a 64MB minimum graphics card (ideally more though).

Even if you find the framerate isn't great on your computer, you can usually still manage to play since its a turn-based game and you don't get pwned by all the other players like you would in a real-time game..

I'm having some dramas with my framerate though I'm currently running an nVidia 7900GT under Vista with current drivers. Any thoughts? Can I somehow force D3D? Or failing that, what can I alter in my prefs.cs to get a better performance?

In %Program Files%/Darkwind/common/client/prefs.cs, find the line that reads:

$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "1";

Change the 1 to a 0.

Curious, but on Win2K I got this:
(when $pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "0"; )

Quote:
Video Init:
  Accelerated OpenGL display device detected.
  Accelerated D3D device not detected.
Voodoo 2 display device not detected.

"D3D" display device not found!
"D3D" display device not found!
"D3D" display device not found!
"Voodoo2" display device not found!

Sam said that he had not included the D3D dlls and I think I noticed it! But why can Deathangels run it in D3D? Because of Vista? I remember that fu&%§$! Microsoft prevents DX from installing some components on Win2k which would run, but... dont know..

He must have had the DLLs already, elsewhere (he's a Torque programmer too, you see). I've put them here for you to try:

d3dwrappers.zip

You need to unzip this into the same folder that the darkwindLobby.jar and the darkwindClient.exe are in.

Personally, I found the framerate got worse when using DirectX instead of OpenGL.

Cheers for the D3D libs, Sam. I'm now getting nice smooth performance, as I'd expect from my stupidly overpowered card. Makes me wonder exactly how much crippling MS have done to OpenGL under Vista. :/

That's interesting. I'll definitely put the option in for Windows users to use D3D then..

How much better did the framerate get?
Section8

Posted Jul 28, 2007, 2:50 pm
I haven't actually measured it numerically, but it was pretty significant. Northern Foothills under OpenGL was between about 1-5 frames in places (all of the lights in view?) and now it stays at least above 20 frames per second. I'll see if I can get you some exact measures though.

My performance seems better in OpenGL... but I noticed something odd while testing it. FRAPS works great when I'm in OpenGL but won't work in DirectX mode. Very strange. As a result, it's only a guess that the performance is better for me in OpenGL.

Can you please provide these again? (the link is broken).  My Vista box will not work(with new or old drivers) in Glide and D3D will not show car textures (but does at least show everything else fine).

I actually include them as standard in the full download now, I think.

The files are called "glu2d3d.dll" and "opengl2d3d.dll"... do you have them?

Hi guys. I'm new to the game and I'm having trouble with the graphics drivers that come with Windows Vista. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what drivers I need to play the game. This computer is an e-machine that I bought in December of last year.I've had no problem playing any other games and,i must admit,i'm already hooked on this concept and what i can see of Darkwind already.I simply must play it!!Any assistance any of you can give me would be great, and i would be ever so grateful.

Sincerely,

get the graphics drivers from the manufacturer of the graphics chip, not microsoft.

nvidia and ATI are the most common and their drivers will work. My tests with windows 7 reveled the microsoft drivers DO NOT WORK, you have to get the drivers from the graphics chip manufacturer's website.

LOL the spellchecker underlines microsoft with a red line and the suggestion is to capitalize the M and have Microsoft. LOL

What Mad Mike says is true.

I know the guy who puts together the NVIDIA driver packages. His advice? NEVER INSTALL THE MICROSOFT-PROVIDED NVIDIA DRIVERS.

Always get them directly from www.nvidia.com

Thanx so much for the help. It's very much appreciated.I'll try the nvidia site now.Wish me luck!!!

Hmmmm I'm having some problems, I have an ati hd4650, and the open gl won't let me go past the chat room of the client, and the d3d is all flickery and only shows a grayish area for the cars in the game. The crash report for the open gl which i get eventually sometimes is something about an instruction at and addy trying to read another and Memory could not be "read". and to click ok to terminate program. Note that only the lobby does that and after a race has finished not during the race. Oh, I'm using windows xp pro. Have the latest drivers for the card.

Do you have the drivers from the graphics manufacturer? Or the latest that Windows Update gives you?

I've seen where people should use manufacturers' drivers only...

Yes, I have the latest drivers from ati, last month is when they came out.

Not a major issue, maybe just a Sargent one ... oh har har.

Experiencing small blocks on the edges of objects from some angles, has anyone else had this issue or know how to deal with it. Im using an old graphics card ATI 9800 SE, and XP sp 3, and have the latest drivers from ATI.

(expamles of this issue can be seen in some of the screens on my banter page)

On topic of ATI 9800SE video card, has anyone tried soldering up the jumpers to make it work like a 9800 pro? opening up an extra four video pipelines.

Nice to see some genuine user feedback

Sorry to ask this here, but I can't find info on this:
will the game run half-decently on a P4M/1.6 with a 16Mb ATI Radeon M6 mobile chip or is this hopeless?

The video card is pretty iffy. Pretty much all you can do is install the game and try running it. Make sure you have the latest video drivers for your video card.

For the openGL slow downs, it's actually a part of the resource manager. If you were to run openGL in full screen mode it *SHOULD* be withing a couple fps of DX, though Mircosoft has definitely done some funky stuff that makes DX easier to code fast stuff with.
As for what drivers, it would depend on what graphics card you have. you can check what card you have by right clicking my computer and going to your device manager and checking what display adapter you have. From there it is *USUALLY* pretty easy to get the most recent drivers for that card from the manufactures web page. Hope that helps.

My targetting lines take on the colour of my movement/stress ring. Peds take on a grey line from their movement line.

I brought this up in a nother thread, and someone had the same thing and a fix, but I coudn't find it.

All this happened when I upgraded to a new machine with Win 7 and an ATI 6450. I have the latest drivers from the AMD website, installed.

I didn't have a fix - but it's been happening to me since I updated my drivers from the same website. I just put up with it. I guess you could try rolling back the driver to an older version.
*Bastille*

Posted Apr 13, 2011, 11:03 am
ahh.

The roll back is worth a try, it wasn't so bad at first, but I find it really anoying now. I can't see how accurate I am at a glance and now have to check my manage page.

Cheers for getting back to me Jeelz

I just have to workout how lol

seems I can't do a straight roll back, maybe I already had the latest drivers. I've downloaded the feb release driver and will try that.

Do you (or anyone else with an ATI card and win 7) have an issue where windows overrides the catalyst control centre settings? I often have to selct the over ride settings button in the CCC.

EDIT: damn WIn7 uninstalled the latest driver, and it won't let me install another one. All the driver boxes are greyed out. Why did they have to make win 7 more like OS, arg!

Edit le Edit: Ok, so all the bush turkeys running around my backyard has had some effect on my brain "Hey fella..."

I already had the feb driver installed, and a march driver is now available (it was only a week ago I installed the feb one as the latest update from AMD, go figure) I installed the march driver and no change :(
