Are they really supposed to do that? What are my options if my vehicle catches fire? At the moment they seem to be stay in it and die, or leave it and die.

Yeah, it makes more sense in scouts, but it seems a bit harsh in arena combat. It's not even like they get many points for it. Ah well, guess I'll just avoid combats with exposed-engine vehcles in future.

When the pirates kill you when you're down, their thinking is that it's supposed to discourage you from joining any more races, so there's less competitors to beat.

Yes they do it, so do it back. In pro combats I have often left the field with no alive NPC characters. In DRs too, but sometimes can't get them all.
