Using some old Forceware drivers to fix the OpenGL problem my Nvidia 6200 has with current drivers. As a result of this, every single time I quit and come back into the game, EVERYTHING resets to thier default values.

Have to change the resolution, disable profanity filter, turn off follow cam, change F2 F3 and F4...

It gets really annoying to have to reset everything everytime I play just because OpenGL got broken by the newer drivers.

Does it crash when you quit? That's normally when prefs are saved.

Hmm that's strange. You can edit darkwind/client/prefs.cs directly yourself, before running it, and hopefully the changes will stick. But that shouldn't be necessary

I'll give it a shot and see if that will save them.

Edit: Tested changing the resolution in prefs, somehow that did not work either. Very confused lol.

I've noticed this happening as well.

It may be related to my bug post about the degradation in game visuals as it's far worse than it was in late 08. Since I've taken so many pictures, something like that would stick out when I'm on scouts.

The textures do a hard cutoff to very poor textures even at a short distance from the camera.

Using windows xp

So I tried this and edited the file to load in 1280 800, sucessfully edited file and it sees my gtx cards.

Still loads in 800 600.

I am no longer able to take high res pictures as the game will only run in 800 600 now, which would explain my bug post concerning poor textures I have been seeing in my scouts/travels for a while now.

I verfied the pref.cs file retained my edit of 1280 800

I have the lastest java

I have lastest forceware drivers

I loaded forceware drivers from marh 09 with no change.

As mentioned in the bug post, I installed the game under a different drive and different version of windows xp with older drivers, same results.

I installed the game on my wife's comp. which uses windows vista and the options will stick when loading the game, but when entering a map, the textures are still at the lowest quality level.

Here are some examples, look just above the cursor in each picture to see the broken graphics and tiled textures just a short distance from the camera. This is how it looks on multiple machines with different versions of windows. I'm not sure there's anything else I can do but throw it back in your court and say something in the game changed between the end of 08 and late 09. Add to the fact the client will not allow me to keep my settings after editing the pref file, something is not right.

If it makes you feel any better Lord, my problem of the game not allowing me to save any prefs and returning to default mysteriously solved itself. No idea how but it saves everything again now.

Maybe you will get lucky and have this happen as well in the near future.

Personally I run in 1280x1024 and could care less about graphics quality, as long as I can see what I'm shooting, and know what to try and dodge I'm good to go.

Can you exit the game and check console.log, when this happens? Are there any error messages about resolutions during the start-up?

So there was another clue presented last night that was posted in the bugs forum.

So as previously posted all my events for about 5 months now will only load with the default graphic settings no matter what I change it to on my end, but the client lobby gui can successfully be changed to any resolution I want. This indicates the server is not aware of my graphic preferences, while the client on my end knows what they are.

This occurs with any machine I run with different OS’s

Now we come to the new clue I posted last night in the bugs forum.

I have not had a disconnect in a long time unless the game/server went down temporarily. But last night I was disconnected by the server and even though it clearly showed in my preferences that I had “Use timeouts first” upon disconnection(Always have and the feature did work before), the server was apparently not aware of this and simply continued on with the event and stopped my car.

Add to that it shows in the DW folder files that I do have the resolution set to what I want and the use timeout function is on.

These 2 separate issues appear to be connected in one area and that is the “preferences” that are set by the player. Client side the preferences will load correctly, but the server for some unknown reason is not aware of those preferences and loads the defaults only.

If true, then there could be a bug preventing the client from properly communicating the players preferences to the server.

With this information, would it be possible for a player to store their preferences server side instead of client side?
