auto-escape vs 'escape from combat'

What is the difference between these two? Once you get 500m, you autoescape, that, I understand. But if a vehicle is far-ish away you get "escape from combat" option. What does that do? Does it disappear? Or something else

At 500m you stand a chance of receiving driver training at auto escape,

At 350m you don't receive the bonus skill up but can remove yourself from the combat with no detrimental results, beware if you have other vehicles that are suffering from stress with in the 350m, they may demo if you escape another vehicle

As long as it doesn't say 'surrender', all you are doing is escaping.

You can do this once your car gets to 350m - it disappears just as if you'd got to 500m. You need to take another turn for it to happen, though.

There's some debate about whether getting to 500m gets you more driving skill, but if you just want to get away 350m is far enough.

I don't think this is true.  I think it has more to do with how many turns you spend driving, and I think the magic number is 100(ish).  Of course, running to 500m often takes you into that range of turns....

Ha. Let's not go overboard, now. :rolleyes:

I'm simply relating my experience.

I've had to escape on numerous occasions against vehicles that keep me within the 350 range until I catch a break and get to 351.

If it takes me 100+ turns to extricate myself, I see a Driving gain more often than not.

Additionally, on the occasions when I can get to 500+ in less than 100 turns I don't usually see a gain.

Anecdata, though, so take with a side of salt.

Which would make sense with your 100-vs-500 anecdata, Marrkos. The 500-plus-turn scouts are more likely to have been on long, straight roads where you're not making any skill checks, and the NPCs can keep up relatively easily.

Some confusion has gotten in here as you are comparing turns and meters with '100-vs-500'.

Usually if I'm trying to escape and it takes me more than 100 turns, I have to run all over creation trying to get the pursuers stuck somewhere, i.e. climbing a hill, or floundering in a valley, so I can just get to the minimum 351 meters. 

Possibly/probably there were more skill checks during all that driving, but (in the events I can remember) it's not like I was doing anything really 'skillful', i.e. jumps, hard turns, etc., so without knowing what generates a skill check there's not really a way to know.  :thinking:

And yes, if I can get to 500m in under 100 turns, either I was positioned at extreme start distance (300m+) or the escape was a pretty straight line, and the pursuers were not chaser/interceptor types.

So, the joys of anecdata: two different, yet reasonable, conclusions from the same observation.

Coincidentally I just started collecting some data on this. I have heard people say that driving is the easiest skill to get but for me it's the hardest, even though I sometimes do marathon games to escape on a travel.

I don't really like to "count the beans" but I really would like to gain some driver skill when I am running a couple thousand miles a week with some of my guys. If I have to play out the travel anyway I'd like to get some driver skill for it.

I find town events the best way to boost driver skill. I usually gain a point per race, and a race only takes 10 minutes or so. 10 points a week no problem. Plus since you don't leave town, you get the full week-end training.

*sam* has stated in at least one previous thread that the distance traveled in an encounter is not a factor in driving skill gain. He implied the primary factor for driving skill gains are the number of turns.

It could be the number of turns your guys are under stress, it could be the number of turns you are traveling over a certain speed, it could just be a straight function of the number of turns. I don't know. Don't ask me. Ask sam.

It does feel as if there are some practical limits, because you won't get 10 skill points of training for dragging out an encounter to 1000 turns.
