Sid Meier found himself up against some interesting design problems. His players didn't understand math. In Civ Rev, the strength of units were displayed up front to players before battle to show the odds of victory. For example, an attacking unit might be rated at 1.5 with the defending unit at 0.5. This is a 3-to-1 situation.
Unfortunately, the testers expected to win this battle every time despite there being a 25% chance of losing each time.

I like this bit even more! (this is discussing WoW):

Quote:
When a player first logged in, they would earn 100% experience. After a set amount of time in-game, they would only earn 50% experience. This way, they would take a break. This felt like a punishment to players and it was universally hated among the testers. To fix this, Rob decided to do the exact same thing, but play off of player psychology.

Now, when a player first logs in, they receive 200% experience. After a set amount of time they drop down to 100% experience. To complete to ruse, Rob doubled the amount of experience required to level up across the board. The math ended up being exactly the same, but players loved this new system, which would become Rest XP. It was perceived as a bonus, not a punishment.

May I be smited by Ishtar for saying this, but emerging gamers today are getting increasingly stupid by the minute.

Welcome to mass acceptance of your minority culture. If you need a safe place to retreat to, board games are that way --->

I believe you misunderstood. :)

Many board games require actual thought to understand the rules, and so , often weed out the attention lacking and dumb.

Try Agricola with all the card sets in play - that can seriously cause analysis paralysis (nice simpler version on the back of the main game board for younger players). I have always believed that simpler rule sets based on clever game mechanics that prevent anyone running away with a victory are often the hardest to truly get your head around (e.g. Powergrid)

Ah, my favourite board game in the world ever.  At least, until the next one comes along...

Best bit about Agricola is the little wooden animals :)

Nexus Ops is better than Axis and Allies: shorter, more brutal, more treacherous.

Agricola's a bit heavy for my taste and I prefer a bit more player interaction. I'm a big fan of Powergrid, Container. When I want to get the same impression I get from a scout gone wrong, I play Galaxy Trucker.

Always been a fan of Space Hulk - back when GW made games that were fun to play without requiring continued investment in the next series of rulebooks, codex and mini ranges.

Have often toyed with the idea of picking up a copy of Galaxy Trucker but not sure it would sit well with the deep thinkers (well of ok those who suffer most from analysis paralysis).
Would welcome some feedback on it from those who own it/play it in addition to what I can read off BGG.

I tried to get into WH40k... the only tabletop game I know some people that play it... but I just couldnt, I have an unpainted tau army of 1k points... but...

The rules suck, I mean, really, I cant fire into a melee engagements, what?

Isn't that what cheap melee units are for, to TIE up the enemy so I can gun them down, zebus...

Galaxy Trucker has been a hit with everyone I've tried it with. My gaming partners range from first-timers to casual gamers to heavy gamers. Some preferred ameritrash, others preferred eurogames: all enjoyed Galaxy Trucker.

The ship building is the only real interaction you have with other players (picking up the pieces you need before they can be snatched up by other players). Once the ships are built, you put them through a series of trials and disasters and see what happens.

The nice thing about GT is everyone gets beat up, even the winner. I have yet to witness some of the bitter resignation that sometimes spurs from being flatly beaten at a boardgame. Even losing at Galaxy Trucker is hilarious!
