Yeah, it's awesome if the players have a sense of humour. Interesting to watch different strategies too - one group I play with always takes lots of time and builds near-perfect ships, the other just slaps together any old thing and tries to rush each other by flipping the timer early. Fun either way, but the second leads to more comedy moments.
Space Alert is another game with a similar vibe, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it unless your group is willing to spend a few hours playing through the training scenarios. If they are though, it's the most intense experience of real teamwork I've ever had from a game.

Try Agricola with all the card sets in play - that can seriously cause analysis paralysis (nice simpler version on the back of the main game board for younger players). I have always believed that simpler rule sets based on clever game mechanics that prevent anyone running away with a victory are often the hardest to truly get your head around (e.g. Powergrid)

Simpler rules designed in such as way that great detail of strategy is possible but not required are often the best. There's a good reason that chess is such a classic game..

I like Starmada

http://mj12games.com/starmada/

We'll have to get together some games that people might have rulesets for one VASSAL or some such computer gameboard.

as for board games:
I hated agricola. Way to complicated and to much options.

I love (Funkenschlag) powergrid: simple rules, difficult game.

one of my all time favorite short games (5 mins or so) is cat & mouse

A few other games driven by simple mechanics that force difficult decisions:

Taluva
Korsar (aka Loot)
Ys
Tichu
Chinatown
The GIPF collection (Gipf, Tamsk, Punct, Dvonn, Zertz, Yinsh and Tzaar)
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
Domaine (Lowenherz)
Dungeon Twister
El Grande
Hive
Pandemic

Happy gaming! ;)

Three chances of success, one of failure; 4 total. 1 chance of failure out of 4 = 1/4 = 25%.

Agricola is only as complicated as you make it, use only the basic card set and it flows fairly well.

Can't stand Pandemic, but that is probably as much to do with my player group as much as anything (most of the co-op games fail to hold interest due to unavoidable bickering between two certain individuals).

Roborally is good for larger groups of players. Another amusing time filler as a no-brainer that offers some amusement is Abandon Ship (though the rat pieces strangely look more like rabbits).

No idea why that fell out of favour in our gatherings Simon, probably about the same time as Settlers of Catan fell out of favour too. Maybe some sort of drive towards games that keep balance all the way up to the end.

Zombie games, Last Night on Earth and its expansion still gets dragged out from time to time for a good laugh.

Give Agricola 5 years and we'll talk about it...

Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan are two major staples of my collection.

I like Settlers for mixed groups of casual/hardcore gamers. Puerto Rico is risky unless you know for sure that people are going to have the interest the whole time. If any people in the room have suggested "Apples to Apples" I know not to bust out Puerto Rico.

I am about to buy "Snow Tails" for some casual type gaming later this week. It looks pretty fun, especially with drinking.

The bad part about agricola ARE the cards.
I prefer Le Havre.
