Tide of Iron would be another way to do it.

ToI happens to be the only war game I own.

Memoir '44 is a nice light WW2 game which I would recommend (also doesn't have the set up time of ToI). Plenty of expansions for variety as well as player created scenarios etc.

My favs are "Race for the Galaxy", "Railroad Tycoon" and a non-thinker "Crokinole" (3rd Generation player so its in the blood I guess)
But I tried "Le Havre" recently and am hoping to try it again to see if it holds up over repeated play.

I loved "Settlers of Catan" but after hundreds of plays its lost its freshness - but it is the standby game if we can't agree on anything else.

Railroad Tycoon

You should give the original age of steam a try if you like railroad tycoon.

Although you can't buy it anymore you can buy steam which gives you all the parts you need to play age of steam

Memoir '44

Very nice game, but only nice if played with 2 players.
If i play with more players i would prefer "Axis and Allies" with low luck rules

Steam is a wonderful game! Chicago Express is an interesting variation of the railroad game where you profit from different train companies by buying shares: it becomes important to make sure you benefit more from your choices than your fellow players.

I mentioned it earlier, but I'd like to bring it up again: Hive. I think Sam said something about chess being timeless because of simple rules and near infinite strategies: Hive comes pretty close to that.

The nice thing about that is you HAVE to build together with others to win.

Railway based Ticket to Ride is good cut-throat/stitch your mate up game, and the expansions are enoug to keep the challenge fresh.

There are some very good rule variants of Memoir for four and more players. One of our favourites is a four player version where one player on the side selects the cards the other enacts the cards - no talking between the two allowed making for a more interesting game (in our opinion).

I hate that game with a passion. I have no idea what people like about it. it's got as much depth as monopoly

... but less dice.

It's perhaps the leading game to initiate Monopoly/Risk players to a wider array of gaming possibilities. By no means is it ground-breaking, but it's certainly a wonderful gateway.

You are all making me consider finding a gaming group ion Leicester, though it has been a fair few years since i last played face to face. Rail road tycoon was a fav of mine on the Amiga, i tried the newer version recently, but game play had been removed for graphics imo, back in the day my favourite boardgames were Squad leader and its expansions ( i truly loved this game ) star fleet battles ( i think, well car wars in space anyway ) Traveller was another staple also traditional war gaming, Ancients, modern 300 scale ( i think, my memory is fading ) and a lot of napolionics, i belonged to an old timers war game group in in the late 70s early 80s North London War game Group and we used to run our own Cons' are the memories are flooding back lol, keep the games coming :)
