all the hard work and no play is coming to an end!

we're good to pass the winter, with the four new farm plots:
http://i50.tinypic.com/ffco46.png

one will be the plump helmet factory, while the others are up to my successor to use. boze and ropes to no end! we can even decorate our fort with tapestry now.

the donkey is still not chained, I fear he'll escape or die mercilessly in the next future.

I also managed to craft enough serrated discs for trapping the secondary entrance:
http://i48.tinypic.com/5cx3kh.png

not much, but more are coming out of the forge as we speak.

this is the stock status, not bad for the late summer of the first year!
http://i45.tinypic.com/izuxhv.png

and while I was messing in the stock screen, I've found a pleasant surprise: around 250 silk thread ready to be used! I've no idea of where they come from, but I hope not to have a spider problem...

and finally, autumn has arrived:

OK, got the save. I haven't played dwarf fortress for about a year, so this should be interesting.

edit: and I can't get it to load. What version are you running?

It's all working fine with the right version.  I've chosen which dwarf is going to be in charge for the next year too.

http://i45.tinypic.com/f9je4g.jpgThis is the diary of Reg Duthalaban.  Today I take charge of Nitom Tholeast.  As the most highly educated dwarf here, it seems like the obvious choice, and I'm sure the dissenters will come round sooner or later.  While I have nothing but respect for the work of our founder, I think we can all agree that it's time to move on from the ... frontier style of living we have achieved so far.  A couple of examples:

http://i47.tinypic.com/29pbtzb.jpgDwarves working outside, in the mud and rain.  And constant sunlight!  We need to get them inside before they catch something.
http://i47.tinypic.com/2iv1evc.jpgMy office - in the main hallway.  With my increasing responsibilities this will not do at all.  Dwarves trudging through day and night, messing up my filing system...

Also - no bedrooms, and indeed no beds.  Sleeping on the floor can cause back problems, you know.

My first task was to stop wasting all our resources on these serrated disks.  They look dangerous to me.  Hasn't anyone around here heard of health and safety at work?  Spare picks and axes will be much more useful.  I also gave orders to start production of silk cloth.  I need to get a proper stockpile of medical supplies ready.

Next, time to put together the basics for a healthy fortress.
http://i46.tinypic.com/2po64pl.jpgFirst project - housing.  Simple bedrooms should be sufficient for now.  I have included a larger room with attached office and dining area, which should be useful once the fortress requires more structured management.  For now, I will move my office here, for reasons of simple practicality.
http://i50.tinypic.com/24y7dso.jpgSecond Project - eating area.  Eating raw food off your knees is a good way to contract food poisoning, to say nothing of the folly of storing food outdoors.  Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if I'm surrounded by savages.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2sb96w2.jpgTraders have arrived!  Just mules and donkeys so far, but I have high hopes for next year.  We have enough trade goods that we can afford to be generous, and that should bring them back in force.
I gave the traders a 100% profit, hopefully they'll send a full caravan next year.

I bought food, drink, spare anvils and a couple of crates of cloth and leather.  They had some very interesting items with them, although I question the practicality of one or two.
http://i45.tinypic.com/10fcbo9.jpgThis glove was worth more than all our trade goods put together.

http://i45.tinypic.com/2w3vm15.jpgAnother wave of immigrants has arrived.  Among other things we have a miner, a glassmaker, a skilled gemcutter/gem setter and Dakost Sigunilral - a highly skilled mason with experience in all types of metalwork.

I will have to enlarge the sleeping area.

Ramps have two advantages over stairs - they're one step quicker to use, and it's impossible for a dwarf to fall down them and get hurt.  Plus I just like organising my fortresses around a big spiral ramp :)  I'm sure it won't last.

I'm kind of slacking on food production right now, but we got a huge amount from the caravan so we should be OK.  My main worries are defence, and that I forgot to keep making trade goods (oops).

Winter

http://i47.tinypic.com/16c53lg.jpgOne of the immigrants from the first wave has been taken by a very strange malady.  She has taken over the crafting workshop and refuses to let anyone near.  I attempted psychoanalysis, but had to stop when she started throwing rocks, and screaming "I must have body parts".  Very odd.
http://i47.tinypic.com/1z5573k.jpgDeciding to humour her for now, I ordered the mule to be slaughtered.  Hopefully that will be enough.

http://i49.tinypic.com/33l0dn4.jpgI have been negotiating with a representative from the Mountainhomes about next year's trade caravan.  I ordered the usual supplies (wood and drink, mostly) along with a few little luxuries.  We could all do with some giant cave swallow I think.
Looks like we should be OK just churning out more trade goods.  I might make some goblets if we find any precious metal.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2jbjtcx.jpg Success!
http://i45.tinypic.com/wl6dy0.jpg Our first artifact.  I'm not entirely sure where she got the iron from, and I'm a little scared to ask.  Dastot Okirmomuz is now a legendary bone carver.
Well, that was easy.  I don't know why the dwarves are so obsessed with this yeti - we have a statue of it somewhere too.

http://i50.tinypic.com/zoaq1v.jpgOur final project for the winter is to move all the workshops to a lower level.  In the layout here you can see the carpentry area at the top, stonework in the centre and metalwork at the bottom.

http://i48.tinypic.com/16qn92.jpgWith three highly skilled miners the work proceeds quickly.  The furnace area seems to have been built next to a seam of coal, which will be handy.

Spring has arrived, and the traders have left, along with our liaison.  They should be back in the autumn, with a little luck.

Since this marks six months in charge for me, a quick tour around the fortress.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2psr89k.jpg Bedrooms.  Enough for everyone here with a couple spare.  I volunteered to let the stone carvers experiment on my room, and I think it looks pretty good.  I'm sure they'll get round to the rest eventually.
http://i50.tinypic.com/2dkmzyu.jpg Dining area.  Not quite the legendary dining rooms we hear of in the ancient stories, but it should be good enough for now.
http://i47.tinypic.com/ak7oet.jpg Forges.  All ticking over nicely.  We have plenty of coal and plenty of iron ore, so I'm going to start steel production soon.

I hear we have a couple of new migrants arriving, which will be good.  I believe we have four spare bedrooms, so we should be OK.

We're definitely going to need more bedrooms.

This game blows my mind, and I wish I had the patience to learn how to play it.

But it completely boggles me, I think I called out "fourth!"... take me off the list, my brain explodes at the thought of playing the game.

Ditto! Looks awesome and reading Boatmurdered was hilarious!
But I already have no free time as it is.
Pity the interface makes the space shuttle controls look user friendly.

So since I'm next, I'm wondering: how do I assign a character to take over? I thought mayor was an elected position. Do you have to rig an election? Should I mint gold coins first?

With Summer some elven traders arrived.  I had heard bad things about the elves, but these seemed pleasant enough, and brought the most amazing variety of goods to trade.  Unfortunately most of our trade goods seem to be made out of kitten bone right now.  Oops.

I bought a caged wolf, in the hope we can tame it and use it for guard duty.  We'll see how that goes.

This must be a change in the new version.  Elven traders used to be rubbish, but these guys had some amazing stuff.  Hope they come back.

http://i47.tinypic.com/33nzuhv.jpgI have finished work on the hospital, handily situated above my bedroom.  Hopefully we won't need to use it too soon.

More traders!  No wonder the elves left so quickly.  These humans brought little of great interest, but at least they don't mind dealing in bone.

And suddenly it's Autumn.  How time flies.  I leave a couple of suggestions for my successor.  First, a stable water supply would be useful.  Second, production of plant products is sorely lacking - a farm workshop would be good, and perhaps a wind-powered mill?  Finally, we need a social area.  A zoo or statue garden would be a good place to relax, and for me to enjoy my retirement.  Yes, that sounds good.

Also, you could try and persuade the dwarves to move some of the booze inside.  They've been pretty reluctant so far.
