Do dropped spikes have an area effect?

I just ran a deathrace and hit two spikes. The frustrating thing is I saw them and was sure I was avoiding them. The event was 103250, my spikes are at about turns 85 and 100. But I could not see the first at all during my replay, and for the second it seems the "tyre destroyed" message is behind by one turn.

Is this a deliberate feature to ensure the spikes have some effectiveness, or could there be a bug with them or the chassis in detecting collisions?

The event was fine, I won, no damage. But I remembered to avoid any events with dropped weapons - I spent a lot of time scanning for them, think I saw them all, but still couldn't avoid them. That's no fun to me (and borderline even if they behaved predictably, just because of the scanning effort)
