Hello,

I've been wondering recently about a way to determine the different towns' relative levels of difficulty. I have heard that the relative "toughness" of an npc gang could be determined by their "fame" score that appears on the pull-down menu on the scout squad's page that appears when you click on the "scout outside town" button. I figured if I was to average the scores of all the entries that would appear on that pull-down menu, that would give me a rough idea of just how 'badazz' the npc gangs are in and around that town. So, that in mind, I did a quick survey of the towns in which I currently have squads and I came up with some curions scores:

Somerset: 121.6
Elmsfield: 191.3
Gateway: 103
Badlands: 163.4
Sarsfield: 143.3

Does this seem right? According to this, Gateway is currently the easiest town to scout out of, and Elmsfield is the hardest. Somerset, the "noob" town, is right in the middle of the pack. This does not jive with what I've heard from some veterans. Is there some other factor in effect?

I think your scores don't take into effect the vehicles available in each of the locations... in a given town, a higher fame gang might be harder than a lower fame gang, but in Gateway, they might have Landrunners or Apaches, which are a much greater risk than the gangs in Somerset whose best tank is going to be a Chomper (excepting the occasional rare spawn).

Several other factors I'd say not all of which I'm privy to. Here's a couple I do know. Number of adversaries is different in the southern towns for a given fame. Return likelihood is increased in the south, the highest being Shanty (I have zero experience in FL, could be bad there as well). While Elmsfield may have high fame gangs, the types of chassis that spawn there seem more limited (much like Somerset, but not as bad). In general I'd say that a 400 fame gang is SS is not the same as a 400 fame in Shanty.

Id generally put the towns difficulty as follows, going easiest to hardest. I also added a bit about the town for your info -

SS - Newbieville

Elms - Has hospital and the only rehab in Evan, several flat maps ideal for ballistics, gates map is a pretty straight road with impassable water on both sides, allowing NPCS a good chance of catching ya if your running for the gates.

GW/Sars(tie) - GW's pirates are tougher, but Sar's gates map is probably the hardest in the game. GW's gates map also has a few far away spawn areas that can cause trouble. Good HP items in Sars, which also has a training center and hospital but is offset by cheap prices which makes it hard to make profits.

Texan - The Pits map can be tricky, pirates are pretty tough. It tough to shy away from the road on Texan maps. Good HP market. Cheap prices make it hard to sell loot for profit.

Shantyville - Tough pirates, NO NPC market for weapons, chassis, ammo. The only place in Evan where Pvp is always Open. The maps are not that difficult, however not being able to sell loot or buy ammo makes it a tough scouting area.

BL - Tough Pirates, Tough Maps. Some pretty wicked ambush spots. Decent HP market. Many Vets favorite town. Reinforced tires required on most maps.

FL - Tough Pirates, Very Tough Maps. You cannot escape to town on the gates map, as there is no militia. Decent HP market (Must kill BH to get HP here.) Reinforced tires required on all maps. Lack of Reinforced tires in NPC market makes travel/scouting tough. Unless you can truce ALOT, your probably not going to get a lorry in or out of here.

Hope this helps!

But the most beautiful maps in the game...
Although these maps are tough, you can use the terrain very well against pirates.

I think the thing you're missing with your scores Zephyr is that some NPC gangs are friendly to the local town, and shouldn't really count when you're trying to work out the difficulty. If you ignore the merchants and civs in SS, there's only the ironmongers at fame 29.

Sarsfield Gates map is one of the easiest there is if you have even ONE FOJ/HFOJ along (or even a pair of spike droppers).

It allows a pincer ambush/setup which is easily attainable (unless ambushed yourself), with an elevated firing position on the left and a drawable ravine on the right. Get even one vehicle up and around that ravine and the bad guys will fall into it.

Elmsfield Gates map is by far the deadliest. Again, dropped weapons ARE YOUR FRIEND on this map. The bad guys come at you with muscle cars, so you need to slow them down/disrupt their charge. FOJs and Spikes rule. RUN! Avoid bottle-necking at the 90 degree turn onto the bridge. Set up so you hit the center of the bridge. Too soon and there's a lip that'll throw you against the far side of the bridge. Having a couple rear-mounted HMGs/HGGs/whatever in your squad is a good idea in Elms.

BL is a great town for a decent sized group (5-6 vehicles or larger). I used to run megas daily out of there: 5 miles out, hoping for the Gates map! FOJs! HFOJs!

Longo's spot-on about FL, Texan and Shanty!

It's a piece of cake right now, but only because the AI is so beaten down (as long as you're friendly with mutants). I personally find Elms harder, but yeah, GW can be nasty too.

GW can be very, very hard. Some of the most fun maps though IMO.
