Johnny Chesnut sat at a table in a dark corner, sipping at something dark in a heavy glass tumbler. His skin bore the pock marks and pale smooth patches of scar tissue that were signs of too much radiation exposure during his long stint in the gladiatorial pit in Firelight. Johnny was still a young man, by the calendar, but his body had gone old on him during his time there. He’d never been quite the same since, and was often seen sulking alone in a corner, as he was now. Today however, there was business to be done.

Johnny looked up from his glass as a scrawny, twitchy, ferret-faced man cautiously approached his table and sat a hand on the back of the chair opposite him, nervously glancing left and right. Johnny lifted his glass, his eyes squinting in scrutiny of the man, as some of the harsh liquid rolled over his tongue. Setting his glass back down, he gave a curt nod. The new arrival took the seat, still glancing left and right for any hidden lurking danger. It was time to deal.

“So you’re here.” Johnny said, “That means you got the message, and I assume you’re going to take the deal.” Johnny paused, taking another sip from his glass to give his guest a chance to respond otherwise. When he didn’t, he added, “You got any questions?” The ferret faced man ran a hand through his greasy hair, noticeably swallowing, and said in hushed tone, “Yeah. Just one. Why?”

Actually grinning for moment, Johnny said “Why not? Look, your boss don’t need ta know about the deal, and neither does mine. But honestly, even if they did figure it out, what’s the downside? You and your crew show up on the road. You make a show of chasin’ me or one of the other couriers around for a bit, and then we get away. Heck, once in while we even truce out as if you’d realized right from the start you just weren’t gonna catch us from the get go. You and your boys keep getting the bounty money from the cops rolling in, we get where we’re goin’, all our cars don’t get banged up none too bad, and nobody gets hurt.”

Johnny paused to take another sip from his glass, then continued, “You don’t jump our patrols when they’re returning to town, and while you’re busy making things look good for your illustrious employer with the deep pockets, you’re not pirating some other poor innocent just tryin’ to get to the next town where they might be able to earn some money. It’s good news all around, except for that poor sot you’re milking for a paycheck. And well, that’s just icing on the cake for me an’ mine. That about cover why?”

Ferret face considered his words for a moment, and nodded to himself, visibly relaxing. He ran his hand through his greasy hair once more and offered it up for a handshake saying, “It’s a deal.” Johnny grimaced at the proffered hand, and opted to gaze at his drink as he swirled it in his glass and respond with a nod instead. “You be sure and let your buddies in the other gangs taking the cop’s bounties know that we’ll make them the same deal, and I’ll see about getting some prime neophetamines for your crew as a personal bonus.” Johnny added as Ferret face’s eyes lit up in response. “Just not them slavers. I got a special like for takin’ their blood and loot from them.” He said with a fierce nod and a wicked curl to his lip, “Yes I do.” Johnny focused his attention back on his drink, taking a long pull as the twitchy man got up and left the table. He looked slightly more pleased with himself then he had in a while. Perhaps he was coming to terms with his trials in the pit after all.

Johnny watches the chief of police walking by, followed by his entourage of flamboyantly dressed men, and thinks to himself, "well now, that explains a thing or two."
