Howdy.

I've reached the point where I can pretty much travel around SS and Elms safely, have accumulated some cars and gangers and am beginning to train em up. I keep reading about camps in the wiki and on the forums, but I'm still not clear about when a newbie can either benefit a camp or gain benefits from one.

Is this something to explore at this stage or is this for a few months down the road?

Thanks.

the biggest comtribution anyone could have made to my camp
would have been to scout from it and raise the fame by killing traders and / prirates

taking piddling small amounts of food or fule is not a meaningful contribution
but weekly fame will be worthwhile

Especially when the owner is on his vacation

Become a member of one of the small SS camps. You can repair items there and learn a little something about travelling. Mechsare probably the best contribution you can make, and likely you do not any good ones. Or your good ones are also your good gangers. But you want to learn about the game, and becoming a member of a camp is a good way to move in that direction.

I've looked at the camp pages, and maybe I'm missing something, but I can't tell much about the camps from those. (Can't figure out who owns what). Is it best to just apply to any of the camps?

You're right about mechs, I don't have any over 30. Do mechs still train when they are at a camp like they do in town? If so, I wouldn't mind shuttling some to camps, but like you said, I doubt mechs in their 20s add much.

About scouting from camps, when one moves toward scouting alone, may be a while for me, is it harder to scout from one of the ss camps? Is it better to stay in ss first?

Thanks.

To get started find Slack Shack on the map and apply there for membership. Slacker's a pretty nice guy and his manager d0dger plays a good bit so you'll probably get accepted fairly soon. When you do you can go to the War tab and see who owns what camps, to answer your question.

There's a forum for each camp, you can ask there what the manager would like in the form of a contribution.

Ettiquite: Bring a couple car parts to replace the ones you use replacing your broken items and don't abuse the daily MR upgrading all your armor to A. Don't keep a lot of bulk at a camp, and make sure you have enough fuel to make a round trip to the camp and back.

*Unless you store it in a vehicle of yours, that bulk doesn't count against the camp limits.  When a camp is overbulk some of the stuff in the camp gets left out in the rain and damaged.  I lost a v8 like that because I didn't know better and the camp manager was absent and no one dealt with the overbulk problem.

You can scout toward the camps around SS from SS and this will help the camp fame just as much as if you were scouting from the camp. Your guys will train while in camp but much slower than in SS. You also have to supply all of your own fuel and ammo when you scout from camp, you cannot just pay a few bucks to reload your weapons.

IMO you are better off keeping SS as your base for now and use the camps to train up scouts by traveling there and donating whatever you can just to help out a little. Make sure your gas tank is big enough to get you to camp and back to SS without having to refuel in camp. Just like ammo, you can't just pay to reload your fuel, somehow has to haul the fuel to camp.
