Ran four solo scouts last night, in each case I had my best mech driving the car. The mechs gained no points, but my gunners did gain mech points. Found this curious.

Mechanics absolutely gain points while driving. In fact, my mechanics are almost all drivers on scouts.

What happened in your case is a mystery to me. You might want to check to make sure that your best available mechanic is set as lead mechanic in the scout window. If that still doesn't work, you can call the mech that you want turning wrenches out by name.

I trained many of my mechs accidentally by using them as drivers.

Keep in mind if a mech is driving in a squad that is also fielding a higher level mech, the former (lower level) mech will train much less quickly than if he is the lead mech.

I've also been seeing odd training behavior in SS. Only 1 out of every 4 scouts seems to train my mechs, despite me messing with: who is placed as lead mech, the squad id, the amount of mech points the highest mech has (ranges from 7 to 37), the amount of mech points the lead mech has.

Yep, all squads are set to use best available mech and in each case that wasn't the mech to get the points. A mech 10 points behind in skill got the skill up in each case.

I think I'll play around with setting the lead mechanic tonight and see what happens.

You get Mech points when you go to the Loot Screen, IIRC.

This means you can get Mech points from a Travel encounter even if you don't Demo any enemies; if at least one enemy escapes, you'll go to an empty Loot Screen and possibly get a Mech skill-up.

You can make enemies escape just by aiming a weapon at them for a certain period of time, or by firing dropped weapons. Even a Spike Dropper will do the trick.
