"Well the sun's starting to burn reeeeal hot just about this time of year" drawls Dynamite Dexter, "and with all this activity around Somerset, we have decided to sponsor a new league, running from May-August, 2042".

------------------------------

Following the recent forum discussions about alternative styles of league, I'm going to implement more flexibility into the behind-the-scenes code, so we can try out short leagues of different types and see what might work in practice. Starting next week there will be a 4-week "summer of '42" league -- and if it works, why not run it every summer in-game? There's no reason leagues have to run for the full 12 game months.

The 'summer of '42' league will consist of races and deathraces, staged on Fridays. You'll have 4 races/deathraces to choose from each Friday night- all using identical cars and tracks - with several timetrials to choose from, running earlier in the day and probably on Thursday too. You'll score the average of the points you get in these events (so you can do any number you like of the 4) and there will be no bonus points for multiple human entries. Event times are provisionally 10pm, 2am, 6am, and 10am server time (i.e. Friday night/Saturday morning).

That sounds fun, good end to the week.

Rather than average points in all races why not make it your best score from each of the races. If there are bonus points for things like most damage, fastest lap etc. then it means that the winner in the first race of the day can't just sit back unless he got maximum bonus points. With average points, once you've won you don't want to race again because it might bring you're average down.

And why not add a few unusual prizes to make it a bit more fun. Some really weird set ups of cars, odd characters to join your team and the offer of fame, riches, glory and missions.

Maybe even put up a rare chassis as the prize....a McKenzie would go a long way to ensure max participants ^^

Heh, haven't decided about special prizes yet but it's a nice idea. There will certainly be shiny new badges to win though. And winning a league is really good for your fame.

I have completed most of the coding done to allow leagues of various different types. Trying out different approaches is a good way to see what suits people in practice, and I think having several short leagues of different types running in different towns during the game year will be great..

Maybe we could include some new race types?
Like the one straight run everyone is requesting, of course with a few obstacles on the path... :cyclops:

Edit: could be limited to 8 racers at a time for starting position purpose.

Definitely, ye. We could even use some of our existing maps for it? - e.g. the roads around Somerset would make a nice point-to-point race venue.

Point to point racing would be excellent - especially with a big field. Starting positions would be a problem though

limiting number on players on such events should do the trick.
8 players maximum, could be lined up at once I think.

RE starting positions, why is it any different to a regular track race?

-- another possibility is to do what they do in road rallys, and release one car every 3 game moves. Obviously you are ranked in terms of your total time taken.

Starting positions: we'll probably need many systems.

1) I think starting positions all lined up would be good, as you can still collide into a competitor to try to take the lead (eh! it's Darkwind afterall!).

2) best driving time sounds good too.

Maybe it should be selected defined by the mighty mapmaker ( B)) depending on the terrain where the event is taking place?

That sounds nice, but wouldn't you still have people in your way if they make mistakes? Though I guess if it's based on your total time in all the races in the league and the starting order is base on your rank you'd have people who you need to pass anyway in front of you so it'd be all good.

But how would the first race be handled then? Maybe a TT to kick it off would work...

EDIT:
Forgot to mention that I'm really looking forward to the new friday night leagues :)

Right.. the new Friday night league is up and running. I've also added extra info to the leagues webpage, so you can see the specific rules of a league.

There's several ways leagues can vary:

1. Are they just races, or a mix of event types?
2. Does the track always supply the hardware, or do you somtimes (or always) need to?
3. Do you gain bonus points in events that have multiple veteran subscribers involved?
4. If there are several events belonging to a league during the week, do you score (a) all your points added, (b) the average of your points, or (c) the best points scored in an event
5. Does the league run for the whole game year, or just for some specific months (a game month is a real-world week)?

I just checked the new league (it's decided randomly of course) and we have two races, two deathraces, and in all cases we';re using stock track-supplied cars.

Can you enter multiple friday night qualifications and if you do will your fastest time count or are you limited to one and/or is your most recent time used?
