So, about two weeks ago myself and about a dozen real life friends and family found this great game and have been playing an obscene amount since.  We fully expect to continue too, regardless of the impact on our social lives, but wanted to share some things as new players we noticed...

1) Community - Major props to the other players on this game! The community as a whole has been very helpful with advice, taking noobs on scouts, and even giving out some freebie cars.  We definitely will follow their lead as it really helped keep us interested in the game.

2) Tutorial - Is a bit buggy which initially gave a few of us a bad first impression of the game.  One player was annoyed enough he didn't give the game a chance until we laid some heavy peer pressure on him.  Also having a tutorial or mentioning in the tutorial about the 'My Gangs' webpage and the importance of gang management via the website would be great for new players.

3) Terrain Exploits - This is rampant and most people call it "tactics" To us, it seems pretty lame.  Can't you just give various terrians a point value in the coding when determining pathing, lowest point path toward the targets (players) sets the path. Then maybe NPCs wouldnt spend 20 turns trying to run over a mountain when they could spend 3 turns going around it on the road.

4) Ganger Customization - More options for ganger customization would be awesome.  Give us the ability to name them whatever. If someone is immature and names a ganger something offensive, there are many punishments you could dish out.  It seems to me the vast majority of players are mature and don't need to be regulated on this.  Having a ganger generation system could also be super cool. If you had xxx points to distribute between various skills and base attributes. More customization = more player investment = more players sticking around and subscribing.

5) Alliances - We'd really like to see some sort of formalization of an alliance system, maybe even allowing players to be in the same gang.  If you play a game long enough, it gets old, even if new content is coming out regularly.  What really keeps players in a game for the long-haul is the friends they have in the game.  There are MUD's we played 20 years ago that are still going strong, even though they are silly text-based games.  Strengthen the community = increased player (and payer) base.

We are really excited about this game and want to see it continue to grow and improve. We will continue to bring more people to check it out and help out in any other way we can.

Cheers!

Welcome Hogfather.
Glad to see that you have joined the DW community. I'll throw ya a few comments -

Community -This is the single best thing in DW and keeps players coming back for more and more.

Tutorial - Believe it or not, it used to be alot worse. But it has improved. DW has just 1 game designer, Sam. He is always open to new ideas and anything you think could improve the game he would be happy to hear. Just keep in mind that DW is his "night job." :) There are marshals in the game, guys with "*" by their names, who are there to help new players. Many times they are a way better tutorial than the tutorial itself.

Terrain Exploits - Again, these have improved alot, and fluctuate by game map(There are alot of maps). Sam has designed the AI to learn pathing from real players running on the maps. Its kind of cool... :)

Ganger customization - Sam has talked about adding stuff here, feel free to suggest more in the "suggestions" forum.

Alliances - There are alot of "Alliances" in DW. They come in the form of camps (there are close to 30), close knit player groups, and the occasional group who groups together based on factions (There is a small, WEAK, Evan reds group... :) )

Well enjoy the game, GL, and cya on the road.

Welcome to Darkwind HF.
As Longo said, there is only ONE developer for this game.

This is his University page.
Sam

As you can see, he has a full day of teaching five days a week during the school year.

You WILL be surprised at how much time Sam actually spends working on Darkwind while juggling home life, being a Professor/Teacher at the University and dealing with the players he has invited here.

Hogfather. You and your friends are more than welcome here.
The best way to get one of your ideas put into the game is just what you did.... Give your idea, tell your opinion of how it would help the game and then........... Go out into the wilderness and try it yourself if your gang has the capability to do what you suggest. (Mine didn't when I started out.)

I know this sounds kind of conceited on my part, but I am far from patting myself on my back when I tell you this advice.

Learn your car first. How it accelerates, drives and corners in races is paramount.
When you get a good feel for that,
THEN........

Go for the Deathraces and learn to use your weapons proficiently.

The type of car you drive and the weapons you have installed WILL affect the handling of your ride. Be wary of the recoil when firing your weapons.  (You can slow or speed up depending on the weapon placement in your car.)

Well a few of us have some coding experience and we might be able to help some. I took a few years of C++ in college before moving on but I can check out most code and go from there; others are much more capable.

Our groups' goals are to bring more people to the game, that it becomes more of a priority for Sam by bringing in more players/money. There are thousands of Hogs in many other games so expect to see more Hog related names, literally daily.

As I said previously, several of us are willing to help with coding, storyline writing etc, but mostly we will work to bring in more new players. This game is great. The players already here are great. If we reach out to our friends in other games, inevitably more players will try it out and get hooked as we did.

As for the game, you will see most of us Porcuine people in vent, in scouts, in events etc. Most of us have already e 100+ deathraces in 2 weeks. We are hardcore gamers and we don't waste time with games that sucks. Darkwind rocks and we are gonna go full boar on it!

So bottom line, just keep on truckin on! Be friendly and helpful to new folks and this game will grow in leaps and bounds, which will translate into more content updates.

Welcome to Darkwind!
I don't think we've ever had a big group join before.
Could make it real interesting in the leagues as a lot of players here tend to run alone.
Some teamwork could shake things up mightily!

yay!!
good to see the ham gang on the forums at last :-)

if you guys are keen to get stuck in whit the nuts and bolts I am sure there plenty of places you can help out

i as far as i am aware alot of the maps/ cars where originality hamerd out by players in the early days. there is also the narrative quest generator if you fancy doing some writing (bottom of the events tab)
yer see the little picks of yore gangers faces? the really cool head shots?
they where done by a player not so long ago.

things in the pipe line at the moment (as far as i am aware ):-

pheromone AI tracking, (might already have launched) this means the AI can learn how to navigate the maps and mimic player behaviour, as it develops i think its going to make the game alot more challenging

scouting the ruins, being abel to go out scavenging the wasteland with peds, hunting for rare bits of kit ! fite mutant animals!! get ambushed buy hammer wealding pirates!

Morgan. a new town(with new maps) that's under development

like the guys say Sam may be a demigod but he is just one demigod so know idea how far along any of theas projects are :-)

PM Sam, he is dead friendly and see where you can help

Thanks for the feedback, hogfather.

As a couple of others mentioned, the NPC pathfinding is trying to improve - what it does is learn not just the feasible routes from the players, but also the most popular routes. This however needs some tweaking and analysis of the data before it will operate at its best. We have gathered about 7 or 8 months of player route-data so I need to schedule time to look at how this accumulated data stacks up.

Regarding improved character development.. yes, these things always seem to be popular, and aren't too controversial either since they rarely have a major impact on gameplay. There were some nice ideas about creating relationships between gangers (who they like, dislike, etc.) - in a 'Dwarf Fortress' kind of way.

I think there's an option to choose your own name in the character hiring process.

On the subject of Alliances... are you maybe suggesting that we should have Player Factions? Because if you are, then I am in 100% agreement!

After we play for a while, we learn which players' styles and personalities mesh best with our own, whose NPC alliances and rivalries match our own, and/or whose in-game goals and strategies match our own. It would be really cool to be able to formalize alliances between gangs, maybe even allow same-player-faction players enter your scouting squads without having to enter a password...

I feel the problem that you have is not the ideas themselves, but your presentation of said ideas.

Who cares?  If you're right, you're right.  why does a community this size and scope need bull#### politics?

you can choose from a massive list of first and second names, covering every combination you could think of really.

I chose 'Winter Sun' as a name for a female character this way

And I like it that way, really. Otherwise we'd end up with hosts of preposterous names people create just to see what they can 'get away with' or slip past the profanity filter.

Yes-- but within limits. We aren't seeing a bunch of 'leet speak' names filled with vulgarity thinly disguised in letter/number replacements.

And all the names we currently have are pretty much 'legitimate' names. As opposed to naming a ganger: Throwaway Gunner 1 or Red Shirt 8

I'm always amused when I see an NPC ganger with the name of a famous person or even just someone that I know. I recently saw the name of my sister's boyfriend. I didn't notice it until I had sent shrapnel into his brain.

To know that these guys are 1 in 99,000,000 makes it all the more interesting.
