Griefing is defined somewhere here in these forums by sam, I know I read it when I was wondering about the non-ban that occured with the studley shark dude back in the day. The consequences for griefing are not clear.  They are variable, it would seem.  I believe this is because in the original inception of all open PvP, the community could indeed police itself.

You are probably right about this, but the things I have read in the forums lead me to believe that many of the pro-PvPers may be more loss averse than the PvE crowd. 

When's the last time an encounter with an NPC gang ended in a race to the gates for some kind of a trophy that didnt involve looting a car?

Or here's a curveball- Do not allow the flag for gangs of a certain global fame, that way casual players do not have to be forced into PvP.  Im sure somebady would stay up for a few days in row working out an exploit of some kind for this, but no solution is perfect.

This is such a simple idea I think it would work.  Couple it with a warning to the player once they reach the PvP Open threshold and I think its about perfect.

Yes KornKob, I like your coupling it with a warning of somekind.  I definitely like this more than regional forced PvP.

Nah, Joel, there has to be an option, that way we can see-
1- How many people voted total.
2- How many were of the " I don't care" mindset.

#1 Will be rather important later after whatever is implemented goes into effect, simply to show the percentage of players that voted.

Particularly since there have been several claims that the original vote was representative of the community it seems rather important to note how many people earnestly have no opinion. 

I suspect that if there was a neutral option we'd be seeing very different results--- forcing people to take a yea/nay position is going to cause more uninformed voters, who will probably trend to the more personally conservative option.

I farkin absolutely hate forced PvP. If I want to PvP I will turn on my PvP flag. It is as simple as that.

This regional change will totally end my personal play style in this game... Moving water from Elms to Texan and gas from Texan to Elms via lorries. I had to work at my NPC factions via combat patrols to make it happen and keep it going as well. I find it fun and challenging.

With players able to take out my trucks, red-dead my crews (for bonus lulz), and steal my cargo no matter how hard I work.. Well shoot, I do not see much point in doing it at all, as I play video games for fun and things like "being forced" "being ganked" and "being robbed" by other people for their lulz are not things I consider fun.

Again.. If I wanted to PvP I would turn on my flag. That is why it is there. I do not want to PvP at this time, hence it is off. Now it seems I am being forced regardless of my personal choice. Farkin joy.

Perhaps DW is not my sort of game after all.

I'd hate to be forced into a PvP situation as well. You need to have some spare coin to bounty out of any interceptions - it wont cost you much unless you are pretty famous.

The fuel for the trip often costs more, I've seen people pay as little as 5k to bounty out - I've done this myself a few times.

The idea of getting taxed a few k for a bounty against a human and not having to worry about an NPC encounter could be well worth the investment for a canny merchant.

Hate to continue the "rebirth" of this long (and deservedly) dead topic, but "fame" is one of the more broken elements of the game. My gang tends to be one of the more "famous" gangs in Evan, yet I'm a fairly casual player who operates only in the Northern Triangle. Now I do a fair amount of town events and courier missions, but really isn't it strange that my gang is the sixth most famous player gang in all of Evan when we've never gone further south than one trip to Badlands? (Not counting the guy returning from the Gladiator pits.) How does that make any sense? Having the PVP bounty be based on such a broken mechanism is clearly something that needs to be looked at. Having anything based on fame doesn't make sense given how poorly the fame mechanic appears to function.

That said, this probably should be another topic, so that this pointless thread can remain buried.

Still a lot of bitching over nothing.

I intercepted one of JS's cars last night and Juan paid me off twice.

I hurt no one (JS painted me every turn of the encounter lol). And my reputations were destroyed.

I'm probably the only one doing occasional intercepts. Not sure.

I personally cannot afford the fame hit like that, a griefer would very quickly find town militias waiting for him on every return.

Working as intended (basically there will not be pvp intercepts just for "fun" even you've got to really really want that fight to pay for it in the reps).

From now on, because this topic has me absolutely IRATE. I will be griefing the sh|#@$ out of the next uninformed bitching post about PvP on this board. I'm that sick of it.

If PvP is maintained as it is (or further nerfed) I really think the tougher PvPers will simply take it to the racetracks.

For those of you who weren't around when I changed my gang name to G.P.A.W. (Groove's Public Assassination Works) the idea was to carry out hits on players based on requests made by other players. I took on a total of 4 hit requests this way and haven't been able to complete even one because:

1. The odds of crossing the desired player in the wilderness are quantum-small.

2. Interception attempts -when you mraculously cross the right player- are a hit-and-miss endeavor that will sometimes let the targeted player evade your attack (in favor of a much easier NPC encounter instead).

3. If a player is somehow caught despite the two above points, he can spend some of the much-inflated wealth any player can accumulate through even lackluster dedication to DW. (I've intentionally dilapidated my accumulated wealth twice to this day and had no problem recovering within two weeks of rare play).

4. Most importantly, players can simply opt out of PvP altogether with the PvP flag and harrass players through the forum without fear of proper retribution. These players are often extremely vocal, poorly informed and highly irritating to large portion of the community.

As I mentioned at the start of this post: any player considering these heavy penalties on wilderness PvP and willing to shoot up a few irritants should seriously turn to in-town events for satisfaction. No one is safe there.

I am not so blind as to overlook the negative effect this could have on new players -who mostly participate in town events rather than wilderness scouts- but given that PvP changes are dictated almost entirely by the lowest common denominator (the cowardly, misinformed jerk who has pissed off a sizable chunk of the player base) there is no other viable option.

I make one single post with my personal opinion on a game altering change, compared to your 31 in this thread alone. Do you really find my one opinion really so infuriating? Sheesh..

I rather enjoy PvP in some games.. DAOC, WAR, WoT, STO, Rift, PotBS, etc.. I just find the penalties for failure in this game to be harsh enough without adding in some human to hunt me as well (for either a shakedown, theft, or slaughter) for their lulz.

Personally I wish it had not been changed at all as removing choices from players never seems like a good thing to me.. But whatever, I gave my subscriber opinion and voted in the poll.

It would serve everyone to realize that most of this is related to intercepting, which is a form of PvP, it is not a referendum about PVP as a whole. There is, as always, plenty of PvP in this game. The angst is over the intercept portion. The rhetoric about "Pro-PvP" and "Anti-PvP" should be shelved. The issue here is purely about intercepts, the mechanics, where it is possible etc. It is only a PART of the PvP in this game.
