Marie 'Daredevil' Diaz began her inspection of the gang's 'fleet' in Elmsfield in her usual manner, by shouting "Shotgun!"

She swung open the left-side door of one of the rather banged-up looking Landrunners, a garish green one designated on the official paperwork as the Range Rover, and hopped up into the bucket seat. On her right, her old partner-in-crime 'Insane' Jane Negron was firing up the ignition. Jane drank pretty hard, but she had a lead foot and was absolutely fearless behind the wheel.

Marie pushed in the cigarette lighter, and switched on the stereo. As per her specific request, all the vehicles in Elmsfield had been equipped with a stereo cassette deck and stocked with an assortment of old folk music... ferocious folk music called 'metal.' It roared from the speakers as Marie produced a slender, hand-rolled cigarette from her jacket.

The lighter popped out, and she fired up the number. Every car had to be smoked in; it cleansed the vehicle of potentially destructive spiritual forces, plus it was wicked fun. Jane laughed as Marie passed her the joint.

"You do know I'm in rehab, right?"

"Oh yeah," coughed Marie. "I forgot. How's that going?"

"It sucks. Here. Watch your fingers." Jane puffed out here cheeks and squinted, then blew out a mushroom cloud of smoke and coughed. "I have to pay the bastard orderlies to sneak booze in for me. If it wasn't for that, I would have jumped out the frakkin' window by now."

Marie stared off into an undefined point in space for a few moments, then passed the joint again and glanced at the weapon controls. They looked okay. She knew from 'Mad' George Rodriguez' reports that all the guns had been field-tested and were in peak operating condition.

She also knew from those same reports that Elmsfield was apparently crawling with Landrunners. She smiled at the prospect of roping them like cattle, dragging them to the ground, breaking their will, branding them, saddling them up and riding them into battle. It struck her as probably being a lot of fun.

It was also official gang business, priority one. When word had come down that the gang would be moving the bulk of its personnel to Elmsfield, she had thought that 'Downtown' Henry Brown had lost his mind. That Ghost Town? Why mess around over there, when there were fewer risks in Somerset, and greater rewards in Gateway?

Of course, everyone knew the answer to that. When Glenn 'El Toro' Torres had been the gang's leader, he had prematurely expanded into Gateway, and a lot of people had gotten hurt. Glenn had lost face with the gang after that, and Henry had gained notoriety after having one of his arms blown off in a deathrace, so the reigns had simply shifted.

The CB radio suddenly crackled to life.

"Desert Wind to Elmsfield, Desert Wind to Elmsfield, this is 'Jolly' John, do you copy?"

Marie grabbed the mike and keyed it to life. "Copy that, Desert Wind, this is 'Daredevil' in Elmsfield. How's the weather out there?"

"Partly cloudy with a chance of bullets. We should be rolling into town in a few hours. Me and 'Gonzo' are gettin' out, then I'm passin' the Desert Wind off to 'Dino' for the trip back to Somerset. I think they're pickin' up 'Little' John, then headin' right back here."

"Cool. Whatever. See you then."

"Indeed. Desert Wind out."

"Elmsfield out." Marie hung up the mike and ground the roach into the ashtray. She turned to Jane. "Soon, the fun starts!"

Jane made a face. "Fun for you maybe. I'll be sitting in a circle with a bunch of Zerkers and Novocaine junkies swapping old war stories and smoking cigarettes." She sighed. "I wish I could be out there dodging bullets with you guys."

Marie patted her friend on the shoulder. "You'll be out there with us soon enough. Come on, let's get some food. I'm starving!"

The Range Rover rolled back into town again, with a Trader Van in tow this time.

Diaz sighed.  Still no new Landrunners.

The two-car caravan slowed to a halt, and Glenn El Toro Torres hopped out of the Rover with a grin on his face.  "Another profitable run... 20 cans of fuel this time."

"But still no Landies."

Glenn strode slowly towards her, stopping only when their faces were just inches apart.

"Listen up, chica.  Me and Jose here are not planning on being in your little Ghost Town for very much longer.  So let's get one thing straight.  The Range Rover is mine until I say otherwise.  Just stay out of my way until then.  Got it?"

With that, the former gang leader turned and strode towards Joe's Alehouse, leaving Diaz in the dust.  She sighed again.
