Hey guys,
My friend recently showed me this game and it looks pretty interesting.

Trouble is, I end up downloading it (Wow, the download speed was really slow for me - 20-40kbps) but it won't open.

I downloaded the zip version as I have Vista and the installer is said to be not compatible with Vista.

So, I open the zip, I see the files, I extract them to a folder, I go W-T-F. So, I open the readme to see what I'm ment to do, but still no help.

For some reason my java file extensions aren't automatically linked to Java, so I use the "Open with..." button and select the javaws.exe file in the windows/system32 folder. No luck. I get this:

"Unable to launch application" with a big fat exclamation mark beside it. When I click on "View details" it comes up with a bunch of squares like theres no tomorrow.

So then I ended up choosing the javaw.exe which may also be used by Java applications, but that just says it's missing the main class file.

---

So, conclusion, is my installation file messed up, is my Java runtime library messed up or should I just risk redownloading everything and getting the self-installer even though I have Vista?

Again, I HAVE the latest version of Java Run-Time Environment, and I am definitely not new to computers ;).

I would suggest checking the user rights on the folder; maybe you don't have the needed ones?

As a matter of test, could you try to run an other .jar file and see if the problem persists?

By the way from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Problems with the JAR format

The second is WinZip converting upper-case files and directories to lower case. If a user views the contents of a JAR file using WinZip, a file such as MANIFEST/MANIFEST.MF is converted to manifest/manifest.mf. Some mobile phone Java runtimes appear to parse the manifest in ways that are incompatible with the specification, and require a strict ordering of entries in the manifest. They also do not implement the line wrapping algorithm correctly. This may imply a problem in the test suite for the J2ME mobile java runtime.

This certainly won't help, as you still need to run a .jar file at the end of it.

Can you run other .jar files? This seems like there's something wrong with your java runtime.

Ugh, well I've disabled UAC since I installed Vista so administrative privileges aren't an issue.

I've spend several hours trying to launch this game and I'm just about to give up.

I tried opening java.exe, javaw.exe and javaws.exe

java.exe just pops open a command prompt and closes, doing nothing.
javaw.exe said the main class file is missing.
javaws.exe says the program can not run with a red exclamation mark.

I tried reinstalling Java. I tried downloading a different version.

NOTHING works. Guess I can't play this game :(.

Have you tried running it with the commandline:

"java.exe -jar darkwindLobby.jar"

(or javaw/javaws or whatever works best)

Ahh, thank god it seems to be working at the moment. I haven't completely ran the game yet but at least I have access to the log-in process.

edit
Hmm, after I log in it just closes and does nothing now.

hmm, you only need the java lobby to patch the game so after you've ran it ok once and it's patched everything you can run darkwindClient.exe instead.

Apparently I'm getting a "security issue".

It repeats downloading the files each time I run the jar file, and I am not getting any additional files in my darkwind folder. I tried various folder locations such as my desktop, my C and my D drives.

I read somewhere that I should change permissions for my user account, but this is not possible as I am a complete administrator with UAC off.

edit
Ah, good news. It's finally downloading the files. 67 in total. What I did was move my darkwind folder to my C:\users\username\ folder. For some reason the text files were already there so I'm guessing the updater was looking in there for some reason.

You are supposing it is off. Don't expect a Windows based computer to do what you want it to do...  ;)
Set UAC on again and set the proper rights on the folder.
I'm guessing UAC is still acting, even when turned off.

Wow I think DarkWind REALLY hates my computer. It's updated all the new files in my main username directory instead of the darkwind folder. Now I have to move them all separately back in.

GOAL!
I can run the program but..

It claims the files are out of date, yet it won't update them.

Oh my poor computer..
I am now attempting to copy my files from my C:\users\username\darkwind\ folder to C:\users\username\ folder. This is gonna cause a huge mess in my user folder but it seems to be the only way to make it work.

After I did this it seems to be updating the "game engine" this time.

For what it's worth, you should be able to run the game from anywhere, I don't think you absolutely have to run it from Program Files. Copy it somewhere else, run the Java patcher, and then you should be able to just run the darkwindClient.exe from the folder you've got it in.

I'd suggest it another way: Vista really hates everyone. But the effect is probably the same..

Have you managed to get it sorted out now?
