Yo,

A few questions for the vets who use em...

1.What is the max range of an MM?

2.Does closer mean easier to hit, or does it tail off with range?

3.What do ya prefer to mount them on? (I'm currently using a Box van to great effect, behind my line of Buzzer / Apaches / Windy 2's.

Your help is appreciated!

max range is around 215-225...

below 40-45m or so you can't hit with them at all, 175-200m seems to be the sweet spot

BoxVan, Lorry, Bus, Trash Truck all work well

1. 220m... Basically, only thing you would fear with those is lasers crewed by my people and above, or RGM's

2. Opposite, the further out the better your aim... It's slightly bugged to so sometimes they'll all hit the same spot perfectly, only seems to scatter in range and not left to right.

3. Use them as support weapons, now personally I would put them on the back of fire engines but before I had all of those, I used lorries.

Try to keep the lorry CR low and use it behind your lines, think of it like a supply boat with limitied combat ability.

Mortars really only work en masse and in larger squad, I really would not reccomend using them in few numbers, I'd say you need at least 6 for any real combat effect, but preferably way more.

220 is only if you are firing from above, or the terrain falls away. 200 is the max "direct" hit range, otherwise it's just splash past that.

I see them miss left and right quite a bit.

They are fine as support weapons down to 2. 1 is not really worth it other than fun. 2-4 will disrupt the enemy quite a bit but don't count on demos. 6 or more will begin to demo enemies quite nicely. Realize however, that with 3 vehicles with mortars (say lorrys), you will need a fairly significant escort force. Mortars are not really the main weapon. (there is an argument to be made about them being the main offense in large numbers in PvP, but that is a different subject)

Don't worry about the CR too much on the lorry (point here is to not put a bunch of useless weapons on the sides that will bring CR but not be used much). Fully armor it (it has Mortars to protect!). Put a roll cage on it and a Re-Ram. don't bother with other weapons unless you're a smoke screen kind of guy. Mine have PGs, and some MDs on the side sometimes just for kicks.

Finally, I'd reccomend a lorry, because a lorry can really clean up the loot. you just have be careful, and the sand maps near SS can be problematic. the box van will give you some more maneuver and speed, but of course carry much less int eh way of reloads and loot.

agreed with FF on all points but for one...

I have been using them in mass recently as well...

I use them on buzzers..2 rear mounted mortars with a Heavy Rocket front just incase...crewed with 2 and 3 reloads...

I use 5 buzzers and 2 FEs with Lorry to carry extra ammo for returns and scout car. Usually draw 20 or so Enemy cars

They line up in front of FEs(all rear firing) and use BLst to target the long range vehicles (rocket cars cgl vehicles) and to train for RS...FEs slow any progress and create a wall of wreckage to keep the mortars firing...Usually just running out of ammo by end of scout.

Edit...In SS scout towards GW...road maps are awesome...especially Once Upon a Town

Latte, so your dissagreement is Buzzers over Lorries?

Granted, you're doing SS but doesnt that bump up the CR quite a bit, and how long do their ammo normally last?

I should clarify, I'm working under the assumtion of large squad scouting here, at the minimim a 2.5k force, take that under account for my suggestions... Also, mortars generally dont do very much in skirmisher/hunter* squads compared to the big ones...

Firefly proboably should explain how he defines all those... but eh...

Yes it bmps CR but thats what I want.

Ammo normally lasts or runs out right at end of scout...lorry there for ammo on returns.

CR on my squad is 3.7k CR

A lot of people swear by this but personally I've almost never even had an opportunity to use a ram on a lorry. Even when it may have been possible it seemed better to run the lorry away and let other cars deal with the enemies. I usually run my lorries completely unarmed with no roll cage just so they are lighter and can carry more. My only goal with the lorry is to keep it as far away from enemy as possible, and the escorts between it and the enemy.

Then again, I tend to run 1 unarmed lorry with 1 heavy escort and a lightly armed muscle driven by a decent scout. I almost never have an ambush this way...

My squads are 2 Ambulance or Buzzers, 1 Osprey or Turin and 1 or 2 Lorrys. That's about 1200-1600 CR dending on the specifics. The smaller groups you are talking about probably have little need/use for a ram. But in the south, with my larger CR squads and some maps that are suicide to turn around on if ambshed from both front/back the ram has saved my arse on multiple occasions.

Plus there is the fun factor of running over the enemy and redding out their car in one hit.

Plus?

To be honest, this is pretty much the only reason you really use those rams, hahaha  B)

Aye, running the lorrys right next to each other and taking the double wide ram of terror up the middle is a hoot.  But beware the physics engine, when you hit, anything goes.

True that. I managed 3 one hit kills in one event the other day with my Ram based Trash Truck. It was soooo much fun.

Reason to have the rams on the lorries isn't for fun, it's for smashing the living #### out of close spawning enemies in front in the event of an ambush while guns focus on the rear/sides. Smoke can usually limit the amount of damage the lorries will take while they're closing distance (which doesn't take long at all in that situation) and with the rollcage, even if they dodge the ram and clip the side, you're gonna take them out with little to no internal damage.

As for mortars themselves, they're perfectly usable as the primary weapon in any size event. But they need range to have decent damage per turn. Too close and you'll have too many misses. Although I've hit targets even at 10-30m, it's just not efficient.

If you can't afford super vehicles, stick with boxvans. Just learn to drive them before you lose anything imo. Lorries are larger, and better for looting, but a v8 boxvan is easier to keep the enemies in the sweet spot with and can handle offroad better. More space than a buzzer or whatnot too.
