Got into a very heated discussion of socialism vs capitalism and I have to say this:

I believe certain things. I believe certain things very strongly. And while I like to argue about these things, I tend to get angry when I do. Politics is one of those things.

I come to DW to play Sam's game and blow up cars with rocket launchers, not argue about real-world politics. And I try to get a scout going in the Lobby, and it's drowned out by people arguing. This isn't fun.

Just a request for the future: If you want to argue real-world politics, make a fresh chat channel - call it "Politics" or "Blazes" - and take it there, so those of us who want to talk Darkwind and don't want to get angry can do so?

To be honest fifth, I thought it was an interesting... and better yet, very level headed discussion.

Nobody got agressive or upset over it, so I thought it was fine.

I'll second Fifth's comments though, as they pertain to the Darkwind main lobby channel.

I don't think he was referring to this thread in this section of the forum, which is another thing entirely.

Well, I was speaking of the conversation we had in the main lobby, as long as people dont get offensive on one another I think it's a resonable discussion to have.

I thought it was interesting, if anything.

It was a very interesting and level headed discussion.  I enjoyed the heck out of it actually.

I may move to Sweden now.

No, not referring to this thread.

My problem with the Lobby discussion, and the reason I'm throwing bombs into this discussion (sorry) is that I get mad very easily, and I don't want to choose between getting seeing-red mad and leaving DW until the conversation is finished.

So essentially what you want Fifth is for everyone to agree with you for fear of tripping up your mad button?

If you see Red (trying to keep this with the original OP line here :) ) so easy, avoid the discussions.

I'm avoiding the discussion here in the Forum, what I'm asking is that if you want to argue politics (And especially US tax/economic policy, which is my big hot button) do it in another chatroom from the one where I'm trying to get a scout organized.

Ah well... thats different.

Just looking into that crystal ball though, should another chat line develop with such interesting dialogue as today's, I'm thinking just about everyone would go check it out. Kind of like slowing down on the interstates to see the car wreck as you go by.

Not sure organizing a group scout would be effective during that time.

Could be wrong though, never been one for group scouts anyways so the dynamics could be beyond my grasp.

I must agree with fifth here really.

There are other chat channels and this really IS what they are for. The button flashes when someone posts, so If you are interested you can check it out.

Is the convo less interesting then. Well kinda, but only because the chat channels are underused for this. Just my opinion though.

Its not like you can suddenly shift the whole chat over there, but if people were doing it more regular, things might change.

+10 from me....
The lobby specifically provides additional channels for this reason as well as enabling a PW to be given to those who want to participate in such discussions..

I would propose that Marshals seeing the open lobby used as a soapbox for political discussions ask the posters to use the other channels to voice opinions and invite others to join them.

If they do not comply and continue their rant in the open lobby, they should be warned of possible mute/boot sanctions from the lobby unless/until they move the discussion to one of the other offered channels.

The open lobby should be used for "DW business" only... Thanks for pointing this out Fifth.... I'll bring it up in the Marshals forum.

Look, this is silly.

Some adults had a very interesting and calm discussion.

One person gets "angry".

I am by no means a "PC" kind of person but I don't like having the lobby filled up with a lot of talk that has NOTHING to do with scouting or DW.... The offer to scout is lost in a miasma of crap best placed elsewhere. :D

Some people like me dont read fast enough to see all replies before they are lost above the chat line and I dont want to expand the chat line to take up half the screen to see what I missed. :p

JD just jumped in there while I was writing my essay

I too find it hard enough to follow sometimes. This may have something to do with a beverage with same name as above poster

I don't think it has anything to do with the topic of the discussion, it just seems what the channels are for.

Makes it easier for new folk to find what they want to find. Its really no biggy here, as we are all adults and our lobby is pretty neat in compared to other joints.

I can't talk much, 80s and I (and others) spent a lot of time talking nonsense in the lobby yesterday. I couldn't stop laughing for a bout 30minutes until my guts seriously were sore.

80s, you're one funny dude.

The reason I started this thread is because some may read something and get angry by it, for the wrong reasons imo. It may have nothing to do with real life. And then others get angry when they have to relate it to real life situations that have ... nothing to do with DW. If ya get me.

I was not in the lobby when this discussion was had. I would have found it most interesting. What I do find interesting is that Ive brought up a DW topic, and its somehow manifested itself, again, into a political discussion off base  people then feel they need to justify their position as its not what was intended, hehe guilty as charged. The initial post was simply to say, there could well be a difference between ones RP POV and the real world.

...Now I went back and read what the original conversation was about.
...Sorry, Bastille. My bad.  :(

Anyway, I see where you're coming from - I've always pictured Evan as a collection of city-states, a la medieval Italy or ancient Greece. Only with easier travel. The pirates are the people who aren't really part of the social order, so they get food by raiding the northern cities and farms, who pay taxes to the merchants based in Somerset and Elmsfield, who dispatch loose militias and mercenaries (us) to eliminate the pirates when they become too much of a problem.

Texan and Sarsfield being other city-states, dependent on food supplies from the north, though they have the economic resources (oil and manufacturing, respectively) to barter for that food.

Firelight and Shantyville? Like medieval Germany, these are people who don't have good land, so they rob anyone passing through (Shantyville) or raid neighbors (Firelight)

If this were an actual political situation, I'd think Firelight would have been burned out by pissed-off militias from Somerset and Elmsfield. Of course, possibly Elmsfield and Somerset are too divided over petty issues - trade, taxes, currency, where the border is - to really organize themselves.

Here's an idea for narrative writers - a 'cold' trade war between Somerset and Elmsfield, occasionally flaring up into assassinations, attacks, all the lovely stuff. Or tensions between money-rich merchants and land-rich farmers and feudal lords.

Where do the Evan Reds fit in?

I see 'em as essentially radicals - as far back as medieval times, there were people arguing, "Hey, you know that whole, 'Rich guy makes all the rules' thing? Yeah, that sucks. Let's try something else." Maybe the ones in Firelight are funded/supported by the northern merchants, but they don't really agree with their ideals - like the USA funding the Taliban and Mujaheddin in Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Union. The 'abolitionists' in Firelight tie down Slaver resources and sometimes prevent Slavers from launching raids northward.
