I had a travel encounter on the Forever Yellow Skies map. Luckily I truced out of it.
Right in front of where I spawned there was (nasty yellow looking) water across the road. Can you drive though that? I looked kind of deep.
I need to know for next time...

Welcome to the crazy world of DW physics. Water and oil do not show you down in any way. The only thing you have to worry about is being completely submerged for consecutive turns (I think three?) - at which point your engine dies because it suddenly realizes (like Wile E Coyote running off a cliff and not falling until he looks down) that what it is doing (running underwater) is actually impossible.

you can drive through the stuff on the road (its not deep enough to cover you.. i dont think anything on thhat map is that deep).. off road there is tyre shredding stuff under it

its a killer map.. one of the most likely to meet a FT or buzzer

Driving underwater is possible in real life. The Humvee for example can submerge if it has a snorkle kit. This allows them to drive under 9 feet of water. The issue is bouyancy. If there is any current it floats away and can flip

You'd think the post-apoc guys would come prepared though...

FYI it varies on turns till drowned... Ive had it drown me in 4 turns but also had it take 6 before. I think it is supposed to be 5 but there may be random factors involved like damage or perm level that affects it.

5 turns is meant to be the limit, if this is broken by a turn above water, it is reset. There is now a count above the vehicle, showing you how many turns you are under water (and if you are in fact, underwater). A certain amount of the vehicle must be above water to be safe. This varies per chassis (roughly 10%, which would be the amount needed for a snorkel kit, unless you have one hell long snorkel).

A vehicle can travel through deep water without snorkel; a tarp over the front to create an air pocket under the hood will do, just don't slow down or the pocket will be broken and you'll suck water in. Like any breathing in a small space, this will only last a short period of time before you choke. maybe 5 turns. ;)

As for the map in question, Goat is spot on. There are some spots you can drown, but you really have to be stopped in the deepest section to suffer. On the road, you will be fine.

You have to keep the air intake and exhaust pipe above water to keep an engine running. Either of those getting submerged is game over. Intake is major problems to an engine, you do not want water inside that thing. Exhaust you get to much back pressure and the engine dies as it can't get rid of the exhaust fumes.

As far as RL, when floods happen, it's not uncommon to see on the news some car being swept away and a batch of people(usually a mother and a couple kids) ending up dead because they where to impatient to wait or find another way around.

Most common the depth I've seen in those stories is less then a foot and a half. I've heard of them being swept away under a foot. All it takes is a surface that's slick(such as wet pavement and rubber) and enough force to push it off. In fast moving currents, it doesn't take very much water at all.

And as far as the game, I think I might have been on that map, very ugly land scape with yellow water? Ran though that the other day with a Corgy, had no problems. I figured the road went though it, that must be the way to go, besides, I had no where else to go anyway.

In general, yes. But seriously, stay on the road. I have only once (out of about half a dozen tries) survived running along the water  instead of along the road. Hitting those islands or submerged rocks will kill your engine very quick. But the road is more or less clear.

You can run through the water as much as you like on that map, I've done it extensively as it's one of the three maps I get traveling to my camp. I've never found any deep spots. The areas off the road covered by water are very rough on tires, so you need to keep your speed under 45 which can make escape harder. I tend to use the water as a last ditch, and then only to get to another place where I can get back on the road with pursuers off my tail. You will take some front armor damage and tire damage, but as long as both are in good shape before you start it is manageable.

Point of interest, this is the same map as Scattered Grounds, once you learn the spawns and minor differences you know both maps. Until Outback of Nowhere, this made for boring boring boring travels and scouting in my part of Badlands.
