Turning the port forwarding off didn't change the behavior.

I'm not sure what you mean by a proxy server.

Getting the old laptop working won't really help me.

My suspicion is that despite the error message, this isn't really a network time out, but a failure to launch some subsystem of the game that is supposed to come up in a timely fashion, but isn't. The fact that the dialog to launch comes up and then quickly disappears seems to support that. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about this game to diagnose it from the logging.

Your tracert makes it look like you're getting as far a Hetzner fine (that's the server farm we're in) but failing on the final hop to the actual DW server.

But it's clearly working fine for you over the web (port 80).
And the DW client is managing to connect you to the lobby (which uses port 28000).

Hmm.

Can you tell me the event IDs of any event you were trying to get into? I'll check the game log and see if it shows your connection attempt.

Just tried "Poloniuss Tutorial Event" #210429.

The lobby updated to show me as in that event, and there was also a server message printed to show that I joined that number.

But I still got the timed out dialog.

Once I get that dialog once, the buttons to join or spectate other events don't do anything. Also the "tutorial guy" stays up on top of the chat window until I restart.

The tracert may be ok - it may just be that the routers for those final hops are configured to not respond to ICMP.
