So, I spring a couple guys from the pit, and Checkers is nice enough to drive them to BL for me. So, I strip down a Pho and put in a big tank. It's pretty fast, and I zip down to Gateway no problem... but then leaving Badlands I get waylaid by four Ultraviolence guys in all sorts of nasty vehicles. They surround me on this map with a giant crevice all around (yes, I said giant crevice), and from the very first turn I had like no chance of escape. So yes, I have another guy back in FL...

So, is there a trick to running that thing? Guess I shouldn't have tried it with my 23 level scout? Do I just need a 5L engine or something?

You would have been better off charging ahead and dodging the wardance rather than turning and letting it get on your arse. Once you did that, there wasn't really anything you could do. If you HAD gone the other way along the road, the wardance would have had to slow down, turn around and then chase, giving you precious time to gain distance.

Also, don't run with such a small amount of armour. The speed gained is nowhere near worth the defense lost unless you've got a good scout.

Ok, thanks Serephe. I thought about running past him but that deep canyon seemed to wrap around everywhere and I wasn't very familiar with the map. I'm learning my lessons the hard way. And thanks for the tip on the armor.

With that specific map, the road goes down through the canyon up ahead. It's a fairly easy drive. Don't worry, with experience you'll learn where you can and cannot drive (and you'll find that there's very few places you can't take a simple phoenix through).

Next time you're in that situation, ask some of the vets in the lobby for some pointers, they should be able to walk you through the event and you'll learn something in the process.

Other thing about that Map is that you are better at drivibg off cliffs than thé ai.

Brake to 20mph as you go over and you will be fine (latte aught me this 5 years ago)

Most ambushes onscattered grounds i just jump over info thé canyon and run away

Other than SS and Elms, I never use a Scout under 100. Its not hard getting one that high... just concentrate on 1 or 2 of them and 1 of them will lvl that high before ya know it!

Just watched replay... some things

1. ser is right..n stripping armour that low is an error
2. you should have simply gone slight right and headed for the cliff edge... war dance would have popped you a few times but your speed would have taken you past
3. whatever else you do turning back towards a HGG / CC armed apache was suicide

South of GW I never use anyone with high scout skill for travels.  Why risk a good ganger?  The "all around" spawn happens most commonly Friday through Monday.  Try only running BL-GW strip on Tue-Wed and Thus before server refresh.

I Run the strip in all sorts of cars but certain ones seem to work best (for me).  Those are:  3.2L A armor Hearse with rear MMG, 1.2L B armor Sonic with rear MG, 3.2L A armor Sympony with rear MG, 2.5L B armor Eaton with rear MG, and 3.2L B armor Windsor II with rear MMG.

Stripping armor to low amounts should only be done when you are already skilled at the region.  even then there are minimums you should try not to drop below.  Those minimums vary by car and player skill and hinge on wether or not you expect to get shot.

Thanks for the tips. I won't make those mistakes again. At least my driver didn't die and all I was out was an old Phoenix. I'll try it again in a bit after I run a scout or two around the north triangle.

oh, also, different vets have different approaches. Ask around, try some out, and pick what works for you and then modify and build on it. Biggest thing is try different methods and see what works. Best to do this by buying cheap cars in the south like Windys or whatever, and hiring expendable gangers and driving to SS.

You can buy stuff in BL and drive it to SS and scrap it for a profit so if you live through it, you arent out anything and you gain personal experience and your ganger gets some skill.

I have literally driven this with a Scout skill of ZERO. (He made it 2 times to SS and back but died on the 3rd trip once he was skilled! ugh!)

Wow. Shocked that has worked for you for that long. Just like any other skill, I save my best gangers for the southern part. I'll form a scout in SS with a 12, no problem; but if I'm running 1700 CR worth of goods from Shanty to BL, damned right I'm going to want my best guys doing it.

Personally I've never used scouts in any of my events, north or south. Best scout I have at the moment is a 92 and he sits at camp not doing anything.

+1

Also, join a camp. Bring them stuff.  A-armor that 4L Pho or Sunrise for free.  Give it a 15 gal tank.  Do what Goat said about cliff diving.  Now you have the ultimate poor-man's taxi.

Ultimate poor mans taxi is a 4L voy. space for 3 passengers and a 30 bulk tank that can get you anywhere on the board and outrun Wardance.

I don't agree

before I had enough money for A armour I often used 60 points on a voy, pho or pickup to keep down weight and get better mileage (F:11 R:13 Sides:12 top/bottom:6). Even less on the northern triangle so I get twice the miles for my fuel. I still use low armour and if you use good tactics you can evade almost any ambush the NPCs can offer. Ive rarely lost a car to using low armour and have run hundreds of trips. I'll even use that car as bait while shooting the NPCs with rifles.

Charge the weak point can save you

Hmm... well, this has turned into somewhat of a debate. I know the mistakes I made in my encounter, but it sounds like there is no clear correct strategy. Just another reason this game rocks.

Very true. There are a number of ways to skin a cat. As you get to know the maps, you'll develop strategies and tactics that work in a variety of situations, but you still need to be adaptable, and be prepared to do what may seem like nonsensical things to a driver, such as driving off cliffs or jumping broken bridges.

When travelling between towns (doing courier runs, missions, etc.) it's almost always best to avoid combat. If you can lead the AI through terrain it doesn't like to drive through/struggles with, it increases your chance of escaping.

I'd also suggest you check out the Wiki. There's a detailed listing of all the cars the AI drives, should you have to choose which car to drive towards/near, so you don't accidentally drive towards a CC-armed Apache, or whatever...

And on top of everything sometimes a bad roll of the dice (Bad Spawn) can give you enemy at 35m and skilled enough to keep guns on and powerslide as you use tried and true methods to mitigate the danger to no avail.

sometimes those Phos that dont corner well in sand... corner WELL in sand. While putting 50 cal into you. With every shot a direct hit. (Muties seem good at this)

I unfortunatly lost my A armor 3L Rotary "Day of the Dead" Taxi and Cargo Hearse on a map that ive never lost a car on before. The Dingos were putting steel on target. Stinkin' Dingos... Poor Harry Sack died shielding his clients from HMG fire.

Oh, so true St C. And probably one of the best (?) things about this game is no matter how much you think you know the maps, spawns, etc, the game loves to throw in the occasional surprise.

I lost a Bullet a little while ago thanks to one of those "real close" spawns, with a "dead-eye Dick" AI firing off HMG rounds. My side armour was history before I got to the cover of terrain. Even that, and driving off a cliff, wasn't enough to save my guy. Oh, and being knocked into a coma isn't what you want when you're all alone in the wilderness....
