I played this for a while about 10 years back. Was checking out the latest versions the other day and couldn't help but think of our resident voice over man.
Truck sim and run your own trucking company. At times boring as all bat .... but some fun at the same time if you are into this sort of thing. A good 50 or so controls. From adjusting your mirrors to make sure you stay in your lane or see your trailer fly out and jackknife when going too fast around corners, to air brakes, indicators, wipers, horn, radio to talk to fellow truckers to get traffic reports etc. You can even add your own tunes to the radio so you can crank the ACDC while ramming through the traffic. You will damage your load though, so take it easy. Its all about careful, safe driving and long hauls right across america. The drives are LONG which is where the boring as bat ... bit comes in. Theres lots too it.

Lots of different trucks. Slowly upgrade your own truck, make cash, buy a trucking fleet and order them around. If you bought the right trucks and had the right drivers you could cheat quite a bit. From single trailer hauls to huge 6 trailer road trains (In the Aussie outback in newer versions)

18 wheels of steel Roads across America Get ready to hit mute on this vid JD

There are many new versions of this but not much seems to have changed.

Hmmm. I thought this 'Sim' was highly un-realistic for the following reasons:

1) No huge breakfast before starting the journey.

2) No swearing at other road users.

3) No roadside hooker stop offs.

4) Where was Clyde?

Everyone knows that all American truckers have a faithful chimpanzee sidekick.

Seriously tho- who plays computer games where you have to stop at red lights, indicate at junctions, and stick to speed limits?!

Although, I did notice that at one point in this vid, the player was doing over 70 in a 65 zone- THE MANIAC!

The first version was called HARD TRUCK and was more of a racing sim with the ability to pick up loads along the way for money.

Sequel was HARD TRUCK: 18 Wheels of Steel which was the first to make it a true trucking Sim but was on a non-real life map/road system.

I think after that was 18WoS: Convoy as well as 18WoS: Across America,  though I think Across was the 5th in the series...  I these 4 plus the Tycoon version which sucked.  Across used real life maps but had flaws which made it less fun or playable.  I got an awful lot of tickets and my trucks only seemed to do 25 Mph for some reason.

Great game if you overlook the vast array of detractors.  if they ever got that game RIGHT it would be a time-sink because it's awsome.

lol, its a bit like that though huh. You weren't driving with the air brakes on were you?

I did play it for quite some time, until basically my company ran itself (in pedal to the metal - 2004). It was a ... change from playing other car games like colin McRae and NFS

yeah, seen a few vids for this. graphics are certainly cool. Essentially its the same game play?

Tried the demo for Euro Truck 1 last night. Im a bit disappointed that they have not improved the traffic AI much or the linearity of the steering controls or allow use of the gear shift or clutch. Im hoping Scania truck sim and Euro 2 are better. Over all still the same game as 18 Wheels of Steel. Pedal to the Metal has the best fleet management that I have seen so far but Euro 1 was a definite improvement over the last of the 18WOS games which were a rel step back from PttM as far as I could tell.

Toby loves trucks right now, so I may have to grab this just so he can look at trucks :cyclops:
