if we were debating wind powered robots that might make sense... 6 - 32mm miniatures i will go with the sculptors.

Our resident irrelevant child can go off on a tangent again...

How heavy is a printed miniature? Not heavy enough to even cause minor bruising, maybe take out an eye if a throw is well placed. Enough said I think

I don't know about weight, but it's strong enough to make a working lower receiver that won't fall apart while being fired in full auto.

I thought that's why they gave you so many dice - throw 6 dice for damage at your opponent................

Sculptors and designers will always be there, it's just the method of production we are taking about here. Someone has to produce the design, it just weather the final product comes from a mould or off a printer.

Don't get me wrong there will always be something 'sexier' about metal one, maybe the weight/the feel as you move them around, but the costs involved in producing metal and the quality of the metal itself will always be a limiting factor.

These 3D printers provide an alternative, especialy for smaller production runs - I'm not 100% sure on costs but appear to much better in for the smaller runs.

And as a honourary Yorkshire man cost is always important to me........

The philosophy the guys have is more about getting the game out there - the rules - people can use what they like for miniatures.

Pleased to see it it hit 2 stretch target so there is clearly a market for the genre and it seems people were pledging for the miniatures too.

...although as a real Yorkshireman I didn't pledge too high as cost is important to me! But when your friends are doing something like this one feels the need to support 'em.

i would go for resin every time... look at studio mcvey...

plastic for the mass market and box sets - poor (but good for plastic)

metal for the non limited minis

resin for the limited editons.... and boy do they work.

its not an argument about the feel of it... its about ability to produce definition properly.

printing something the size of a barbie doll for your little girl costs about $4 now. without moving limbs, having moving parts means theres gaps and actually less plastic is used. so how intricate it is doesn't affect how much plastic is used, it's just volume off the spool.

PS. I don.t think you can cast something this sexy from metal, at least not for only a few $.

If I printed one of these, I'd put on a healthy coat of Alaclad II.

I've never really liked metal miniatures, way too easy to chip the paint if you actually play games with them.

Actually 3d printing is getting to the detail level where it is feasible to print a high detail model in wargames scale and then produce it by molding. Then it is up to the skill of the sculptor, whether it is on a computer or by hand. It takes skill to produce 3d models with details that will match hand sculpted miniatures. I do think the home printing machines will take a while until they are good enough to produce quality miniatures cheaply, but that day will come. Then we'll see where the market goes. I guess the governments and production companies paying the governments will start hunting home printers like they hunt pirates. Big brother. When it wont be long til we can pring our road war vehices IRL and fight for the scraps of civilization.

But today - no. I don't think so. (Couldn't watch those videos since I'm on 500mb per month internet currently ahhaha but those predator tanks sure looked more like renders than actual printed miniatures)

Kingdom death is a good example of some of the best sculptors in the industry producing models that match in detail regardless of original medium - hand sculpting or 3d, and then the models will be produced by ABS molding.

No, I believe they're printed. Although lots of touchup work afta. But yeah, this will certainly turn around in the future and you can do things you just can't mold traditionally.
