In my opinion besides the standard Biter chassis arguably one of the best escorts I have also found is a mercenary chassis with a 2l and 2 HMG, 4 HMG reloads, 2 gangers and a 10 unit fuel tank for a total CR of 130. These chassis are easy to find and are fairly tough armour wise.

The only downside with mercenarys is the poor turning circle and they are somewhat slow with a 2l. However with 3 or 4 of these babies escorting your truck, they will quickly decimate most NPC encounters.

You can eliminate somewhat, the poor turning circle by staggering your escorts and with 4 reloads you will have enough ammo for numerous encounters between towns.

You can always add a Biter chassis {phoenix chassis a 3.2 l engine one MG and a MMG ,2 reloads of MMG and 1 of MG, and 2 gangers } just to help out as a quick little backup. With only a CR of 114 these Biter chassis are sure worth a go.

Remember with noob gangers you really should only be using MG MMG or HMG period. Weapons like RL's only have 10 shots and dont give as good a bonus for sustained fire or targeting like ballistic weapons. GG will train up your characters skill quickly but with noob gangers its like bringing a knife to a gunfight. A MG is way better to use as it gives a better recoil advantage and could possibly turn or turtle a car your aiming at, especially smaller cars which are maneuvering.
Save you GG for group scouts where you have some experienced backup.

MG= machine gun
MMG=medium machine gun
HMG=Heavy machine gun
CR= combat rating
GG= gatling gun
RL=rocket launcher

You can use Apache or Landrunner chassis as escorts however I do not recommend this with a noob gang, as their CR will determine what NPC,s you face and I would put off using these chassis until you have some experienced gangers with a couple of specs under their belt. Always remember the lower CR you have the lower CR the NPC gang will have.

Happy Hunting :D

Something that you seem to have missed completely, and I would say is quite important - dropped weapons.

With a truck convoy, you don't want to be engaging any attackers. Laying down a carpet of mines and flaming oil is the best way to slow/deter following vehicles.  While they're dealing with your presents, you scarper!

To Smoky-

Newer people, doing escort or convoy runs?

I would advise learning your roads first. Do mail runs...

Learn your maps, know the spawns.

IMHO

As for Escort vehicles... Merc is the poor man's tank.

Consider why it's highly favored in SCL.

Durable, maneuverable, low cr, highly stable, lots of space for guns and ammo.

Also just about anything with a 2L.. most likely will not be that maneuverable, but a Merc does wonders with a 2.5L or 3.2L

As for the topic of dropped weapons... (Yeah PvT, looking in your direction...)

YES! Traders and Couriers should be running.

FOJ and a HMG or MMG... beautiful setup for beginning trade runs.. and NG's are even better if you can get them.

Dual Rear MMG's... also very effective.. or MMG and Car Rifle. (This weapon is very maligned and underrated)

Make sure you have provisions for ammo, weather it is in the escort vehicle directly, or the extra magazines are in the courier, make sure to have them.

when i started doing this i found that a 5l or better box van with rear hmg/foj and a v8 muscle car with rear spikes/oil as a chase car work great. use the muscle car to run around and distract, and lay down a lot of drops. in a stormer, for example, you have room for 2 reloads each as well... just one driver, empty both, and run, reload in next encounter.
also works with a v8 carrier van, make sure to pack a few hmg/foj reloads, and take a drive and gunner in the van, so you can reload while moving... also used to sometimes use a second chase car with a good gunner and rear cr, (i think i had a 5l eaton or some such)... yes cr is great for this, great range, and with rear mounts it's relatively easy to kill the engine or light what's chasing you on fire, or both.

Merc with twin HMG front are nice but put a 3.2L or 3L Rot in them and only carry 2 reloads and less fuel.

Put reloads and Fuel in a dedicated "Tender" vehicle such as a Motorhome or a Van or even a Pickup

With a 2L in a merc I can see you already plan to fight the encounters rather than try to run so here is another idea you might not have tried:

Put only 5 armor and a 1L engine in what you are escorting. Leave a seat empty in an escort vehicle for every cargo or Tender vehicle. When you have an encounter, exit the cargo vehicles and board the combat cars, then continue with the fight. The AI wont intentionally shoot empty cars (they want whats in them so why break it?) so as long as you don't lose the fight, you can re-allocate drivers during the loot screen and reboard your abandon vehicles. This reduces fuel consumption due to less weight in the cargo armoring, plus extra cargo space running only a 1L. (not much but hey... WTH right?) It also maximizes the efficiency of a small gang by not having to crew ALL cars during a fight.

But still, I agree with Necro on learning the roads. Don't try an escort until you are able to successfully flee a BL ambush in a Hearse with 4 blown tires! lol! Or as me and my brother discovered... Be able to fight 7 vs 17... (I think our worst escort fight was 9 vs 23)

I was under the impression that you did not control the escorted cars during an escort mission.

i think we thought this was about escorting your own cargo cars. if you mean escort missions, i cannot comment as i've never done one. seems like a cluster to me, keeping the ai alive? anyway i do enough "babysitting" in rl...

My bad. I got around this by hiring and building a stable in town. Moving slow, unwieldy vehicles with low skilled gang members seems like a bad idea to me.

They are the most fun you can have PvE in this game. Keeping them alive is the whole challenge and they are great at finding new and interesting ways to stuff you up and leave you hanging just when you thought you could escape (or at least get them clear of danger) even when manually controlling them. Great fun.

Yeah, escort missions are very fun! By fun, I mean infuriatingly random! and hence entertaining and satisfying on completion!  :D

I used to fantasize about someone trying to intercept me while escorting 6 npc vehicles...to be used as suicidal fodder. Of course it never happened.

I been doing a lot of escort missions lately. I run my cars one way and the escorted vehicles the opposite direction. my cars run out and escape, which means the ones chasing me are too far from the traders and auto escape, the ones remaining are too few and they want to escape, event over. I never fired a shot.

easy peasy

All good points guys, its great to see that everyone has different ideas and varied methods of carrying out these escorts. I spose thats one reason why I like DW there is more than one way to skin a cat :p. But last time I checked this is a car combat game why do missions/escorts and not fire off a shot? {or drop oil/mines/spikes}

I had a scout trainer running and the pho turtled, luckily I was right beside a very steep hill i climbed the hill and both guys peppered the two cars with SMG with no risk to themselves and with easy top armour shots the combat was soon over. Im sure on scouts with a fast car and steep hills, I could use this everytime and win{target traders and if you dont get the right map truce} with no risk to my gangers or cars..........BORING.
It defeats the purpose of the game, It takes away the challenge and the fun, so why do it?
