The convoy finally limped into Badlands town gates and parked up, all of the vehicles showing damage, but the Trash Truck acting as the fuel and ammo hauler most of all.

"Damn blasted muties nearly got us out there!" said Saul Stewart of the HDA as they trudged into The Grainne Uaile to quench their thirst. "Only the All Stars skills with their heavy Gats got us through at all."

Both gangs had a drink in honour of friends lost in the fighting and resigned themselves to taking in the sights of the Southern area while their beat up vehicles were repaired and refueled for the long hike home.

----

On hearing the tale, Darryl - a regular in the bar - approached Saul and asked if the Gang could use a permanent presence in these parts.

Thoughtfully, Saul queried the young man about his skills and agreed to take him on - and hopefully provide a car for him to use at some point in the next few days.

Saul trudged through the dusty parking lot, ignoring the moronic barking of the dog chained to a wall nearby. He was headed for the Weapons Bunker to check on the repair and refitting of the gang's metal and mentally figuring how much this was gonna cost - and how pissed the boss was gonna be when she heard.

His best Mech, and best gunner, Justin - looked up as he entered the noisy grease-pit and made a face.

"Well, the good news is it's all repairable - just. But we'll have to call in a few favours to sort some of the serious damage we took."

"We do however have two problems I need your help with"

"Oh?" replied Saul, expecting the worst.

"Now, now - it's not that bad - problem one is we don't have the meat for all this metal. We're either gonna hafta sell at least one of the Landies, or leave it here till we have someone to drive it."

After a moment's thought Saul answered, "Right, I've already made a start on that with a new recruit - let me take a look around and see if I can rustle up decent bodies for at least one full Landie crew. As long as they know which end of a gun is dangerous, we should be okay."

"What else?"

Pointing to the back of the garage, Justin said "That!"

In the corner sat the semi-tractor they had managed to loot from the muties in the last skirmish before arriving.

"Srap it, sell it - whatever - we can't use it"

"Hang on there!", said Justin holding his hands up. " There's a 5L plant in that thing that's almost completely undamaged. *That* we can use."

"Hmmm - the boss was looking to up our profile by entering a car or two in the leagues. Okay talk - what can you do with it?"

"I was thinking we slap it in a Buccy chassis, add a little firepower and send it back home on a fast wide path - avoid trouble like.", said Justin with a shrug. "Let the boss decide from there."

"And how much will that set us back?"

"Well, since we have the plant already..." - Justin hummed and figured for a minute before saying "about 30k"

"Right - get on it then. If there's nothing else I could use some R&R and a couple of ladies in the bar looked friendly enough - only bother me if it's important."

Alfreda brushed her matted blonde hair back from her eyes and peered through the dust-caked windscreen as she saw the tell-tale plumes of sand kicked up by tyres in the distance.

"Oh, not again" she muttered to herself.

This close to Gateway she had started to hope the crossing was done. When that damned Saul had recruited her at the truckstop, he'd made it sound so simple. "Just drive this up to Somerset quick as you can and you'll be well rewarded."

Ha! Well the journey had at least made her a little wiser about reality in Evan outside a town's walls.

Taking stock she realised that - despite it's interior smelling like a week-old vest - the Buccy was in pretty good shape.

The armor was intact, the engine running sweetly and still a full load in the micro-launcher on the hood.

In fact the only issue was the state of her tyres. The raider ambush in scattered hills had forced some fairly wild maneuvers - and a desparate canyon chase that ended with the raiders box van burning merrily at the base of a ravine - but all of that had taken it's toll.

As she gunned the engine and hoped for a fast fly-past followed by a short chase, she managed to pick out the colours of the Gateway militia and when the cars parted and circled to escort her into town she almost cried with relief.

A hot bath and a good meal beckoned before she started the slightly less fraught run to Somerset itself to deliver her charge.

On rising the next day in the Bunk-house, Alfreda found a note, a key and a credit voucher by her bed.

"Great work so far," read the note " but there's been a change of plans. We lost a driver this morning on a simple mail run and will need you full time to replace him as a courier driver. Here is the key to a Voyager being prepared for you and your first mission will be to run some supplies out to our members at the Pit Stop camp halfway between Gateway Truckstop and Somerset. The cargo is already loaded and after dropping it off you should proceed to Somerset. Good luck and welcome to the HDA!"

The credit voucher enclosed was good for some basic personal items and included information on her enrollment to the Somerset training college to study Scouting.

On arriving at the Weapons Bunker, Alfreda saw the Voyager being fueled and the last items added, including a shotgun and a few clips.

Checking the car over she noted it was well armoured and had a powerful 3.2 litre engine - but no guns at all.

"How the hell am I supposed to defend myself in that?" she asked the Mech working on the car.

"Don't!" he said "Anything you can't outrun on the road you should be able to escape offroad in this little baby."

And with that he left.

Becoming resigned to her new life, Alfreda packed her things in the driver's cubby - the only space not packed with fuel cans, food packets and ammo clips for the camp.

Gunning the engine as she rolled from the town gates she reflected on her new life and decided - it could be worse - at least she wasn't still serving beer for a pittance back in the Badlands!
