The dingy back room at The Gráinne Uaile was wreathed in fragrant herb smoke - which is as well - it helped cover the other smells of stale booze, rancid sweat and some less identifiable odours.

The smoke swirled as the door opened and closed again, admitting 'Steady' Saul Stewart, undoubted leader of the HDA detachment at Badlands Truckstop.

Saul paused a second just inside the room, reviewing the scene and nodding as he confirmed that all his lieutenants and senior crew were seated around the table. The newer members of the group didn't need to be here for this - they would follow where the others led.

"Okay" he said, as he took a place himself, "It's under way. The members in Somerset sympathetic to our case are ready to act."

"Right, but..." Kevin 'Desert Fox' Trejo started, sounding uncomfortable.

This could be tricky - the Fox was the longest serving of Saul's lieutenants, and co-incidentally the physically oldest member of the group - a whole 24 years. If he faltered now then others might too and the whole thing could fall apart.

Saul stepped in quickly.

"Remember the reasons for this, not only is the group here larger and advancing so much faster than those further north, but also the tech and resources are now flowing from here back north. This is where we need to be now to keep building on what we have."

"Yeah, we've gone over that again & again." Kevin started again, "But look - Spanners brought us together - she's the last of the founders and was always good to us."

"And Ruth will always have a place with us. Didn't she recruit me into the gang herself back in the early days?" Saul interrupted, "We have to face facts though - it's time to move on - and that can't happen in Somerset."

Kevin still seemed worried "So how does this..."

"Listen. That's down to her. She is still a very valuable member of the gang and I'd hate for her to leave or for anything to ... happen to her." Saul cut in quickly, his voice as calm and reasonable as possible. "If she accepts the new order then there's no reason she can't continue to work in Somerset bringing in new recruits and training them up - exactly as she did for us. That's her skill, but she's not ready to face the realities down here in the badlands."

The reassurances seemed to satisfy Kevin, and as he fell in line a ripple of relief ran around the room.

Great, thought Saul. Now all I have to do is pull this leadership change off from a distance of almost 900 miles away.

Ruth 'Spanners' Fisher, walked across the dusty lot, squinting against the harshness of the late afternoon sun and pulling her hood low to avoid too many rads. Her goal was the ramshackle lean-to building the HDA used as a vehicle store, lockup and work area - thinking she'd get some work done on the Flash that got badly damaged in a rally mishap the day before.

As she reached the building, she was surprised to see that the padlock and chain had already been opened - the gang had no other mechs in town, but there were other reasons why someone could be working there. Caution took hold though and she unlimbered her ever present sawn-off and made sure a shell was chambered and the safety off before opening the door and stepping through. Even in town, Evan was no place for the careless after all.

That meant the first impression she presented to the five gang lieutants gathered inside was of their frowning gang leader toting a shotgun. The reactions were various, she noted - ranging from startled to ... guilty? What gives?

She slung the gun onto it's shoulder strap - but did not clear the chamber or safe the weapon - something was up here.

Once the gun was lowered, the group relaxed a bit and Margaret Vaughn - the gang's best gunner and also the main trainer of new recruits - stepped forward and cleared her throat.

"Ruth, we need to talk to you."

...

Two days later a Voyager hurtled through the gates of Badlands with 2 chasers peeling off to avoid the attention of the town militia. The v8 engine roar quieted as the car approached a roof shelter temporarily covering 5 Buzzers and a Box Van while the HDA negotiated for more garage space in town. Expansion had clearly been more rapid than expected.

The driver, 'Mad-man' Armando Speth, and his passenger Steve Mosley (a ballistics gunner) cracked the doors once the car was at rest and smelled the fresh(-er) air after their long journey.

Saul Stewart quickly crossed the lot - and after telling Steve to get started on moving the Napalm Gun he had brought down into one of the Buzzers, dragged Armando away by the arm.

"Well! Is it done?" he asked anxiously.

"Done and settled." replied Armando with a relaxed smile. "Ruth has accepted the situation and confirmed that she and Margaret will continue in the north bringing on the recruits and sending them south when they are ready."

Saul breathed a sigh of relief. "Great ... great. I was really worried how that would go down."

"Oh it was a bit rough apparently." Armando replied, losing a little of his cheer. "There was some shouting and maybe a few unkind words about you. But in the end it was settled fairly amicably. But ... I suspect some people will be relocating out of Somerset shortly to keep things on an even keel."

"That's fine." said Saul "We're getting more space - and more cars are available regularly. We'll maybe move another Mech and Driver out to Rapture's End to help out there if it gets busy here."

"So - the new guy - any good?"

"He'll do." confided Armando "He had the idea that if we had to transport the Nap gun down, we might as well fit the bugger - and it came in damn handy too around the Bridge Out area. You might want to cross-train him though. he's tougher than he looks and he moves pretty damn fast when he wants to."

"I'll take that under advisement." Saul said "But for now I need him to get our second ballistics platform operational. Right, go rest up - we've another damaged v8 I need you to take to RE for repair, along with some ammo."
