[OOC : occurs in SS but posted here for continuity]

Ruth awoke, along with most of the town probably, at the rumble of heavy engines - deep and loud enough to rattle doors and vibrate the bedsprings.

Looking through the heavy plas sheeting on the window, she saw 2 lorries and almost a dozens escorts peeling off in the town's central area and heading for separate park-up spots - 4 Buzzers and a big Pickup moving to the HDA area alone. The convoy from the south had arrived, but Ruth was confident that everything was in place to pass their visit uneventfully and then see them on their way again.

Ruth finished dressing quickly, brushed her teeth and hair and headed out to the compound to act the proper host. When she pushed through the outer door though, she paused under the canopy. Saul had debarked from his Buzzer in double quick time and was confidently directing the crews to their parking and unloading spots. In the half-year since the first group had moved south to Badlands, he had changed beyond all measure. His hair was still mostly the fine dark mop she remembered, but the sun had bleached it in places and his skin clearly showed a few scars and marks from his experiences.

More than the physical change though was his change in manner. When she had sent the group south in collaboration with the Blood Roses, it had been to pickup some better hardware and return north - the idea to stay in place had come later and Saul had been slightly reluctant at that point, having only a few trusted gangers with him. The man she saw now was an assured leader of a large fighting contingent - his body language was confident and he gave orders in an even considered tone that clearly required they be carried out immediately and competently.

Raising her parka's fur collar against the early morning chill - and the already harsh rays of the traitor sun - she left the canopy and started across the dusty road before Saul spotted her and turned with a wave and a friendly, if wary, smile.

"Hey Ruth. Beware Badlanders bearing gifts! As they say." He gestured to the lorry where she could clearly see the crews starting to unload heavy gatling guns, napalm guns, HMGs, MMGs and much more. There even appeared to be half a dozen carefully crated v8 engines!

Ruth was dumb-struck for a moment - she hadn't even know the gang OWNED a lorry - let alone knew they could fill it with this kind of hardware. Clearly Saul had fully meant what he said about ensuring the Somerset group were as well armed as could be arranged. Realising she was gawping she quickly rallied. Now was not the time to be on the back foot.

"Looks like a nice haul you've brought us, Steady. I'll admit I'm not entirely sure what we'll do with it all."

Saul smiled more broadly - this might go easier than he had expected. If he could just convince Ruth that Somerset was her bailiwick and he had no plans to encroach on that, then could settle things down amicably. "Oh there's plenty here you can keep or sell, your call of course - we'll also be leaving behind the BPU and one of the Buzzers when we return south."

Ruth frowned. "Hmmm - the Buzzer *might* work out, although there's much more sand up here than down south so we'll have to see. As for the BPU, you can just have them drive that over to the marketplace right now - that chassis is just too jittery for the trainees in my opinion - the Apaches and Windsors we scout in now are much more capable across the dunes."

Saul turned to give the order before suggesting that he and Ruth go to the tavern for breakfast and a chat.

Saul lay on the bed staring at the ceiling - sighing internally that it had come to this. The fan in the corner whirred quietly and muted sounds of movement came from outside his immaculately clean room but otherwise the day ticked on uneventfully.

Dear God, he was bored!

The southern HDA contingent had been in town only a week when he decided to enter one of the regular evening rally events - Sol only knows why. Rationalising, he decided he had been trying to impress Ruth. For some reason the woman - despite being 3 years his junior and no longer gang boss - still had the power to unsettle him with a look or a seemingly harmless comment. She made him ... *flustered*.

So he'd entered the race - and he'd known Spanners was in the crowd at the event too - so he was prepared to admit he may have been showboating a little and going faster than was *really* necessary. The 2-litre flash was usually a stable little vehicle with more than enough speed to give large muscle cars a run for their money, but somehow he'd ended up nose-first in a ditch with his knee a burning ball of agony.

Which explained the cast on his leg, the support underneath his calf and the array of quik-heal medication he had to take 3 times a day that was making him dizzy and light-headed if he tried to sit up too abruptly. His cast of course had been decorated in a moderately obscene manner by any gang member who happened to visit and find him napping - each time he awoke some offensive new drawing of him crashing or some new rude message had appeared.

He was just looking to see if any more had turned up since this morning and the object of his musings walked into the room with a smile and a bottle of his favourite (non-alcoholic) drink under her arm. Startled, he hauled the over-blanket across his legs to conceal the filthy limerick he had been reading.

"There once was a gang-boss named Saul,"
"Couldn't find the foot-brake at all."
"He crashed in a ditch"
"While imagining some b*tch"
"Licking and fondling his ..."

Probably Mad-man's work - he was quite the lyricist.

"Hey Saul," Ruth said as she walked over to the bed. "How are you doing?"

"Well the leg's not too bad, Ruth." He replied. "But just sitting here hour after hour has me going out of my mothering mind!"

With a gesture to his broken leg, and a smile that was frankly a bit dirty, Ruth suggested. "That's why the guys left you some reading material."

"Yes. Well you can tell them all - especially Mad-man, that once I'm better I plan to *thank* each of them personally."

"Well since it's a bit of a slow day today," Ruth said "I thought I'd come keep you company."

With that she dragged the bedside table closer, poured Saul a glass of Ginger Beer from the bottle and started shuffling the pack of cards she had drawn from her pocket.

"So, 7 card stud, nothing wild?"

Saul lay on the bed staring at the ceiling - sighing internally that it had come to this. The heater in the corner whirred quietly and muted sounds of movement came from outside the ridiculously messy room.

Ruth stirred comfortably against his shoulder making a small contented sound, her naked form was warm against his side in the cool night air.

The last two weeks had changed everything!

During his recovery, both in hospital and after he was discharged, Ruth had been a regular companion. At first she had just seemed to be helping him from the same concern she might show for any injured gang-member.

Before long though, he had come to suspect that there was something more there - and was equally surprised to find the same thing stirring within himself. It was an unlikely attraction, but it's presence was hard to deny.

At first their time together was spent discussing plans for the gang's future - but that soon turned into discussing their pasts and the two senior gang members were often seen long into the evening in Dexter's, sharing a bottle and scribbling plans frantically on scraps of paper and napkins - sometimes disagreeing, but far more often nodding in enthusiastic agreement.

Then eventually last night there had come the flirtatious challenge to compare scars. After consuming most of a bottle of Mezcal between them, the careful tracing of lines left by old injuries had become more than either could bear - and hurried agreement was followed by a hurried dash to Ruth's digs, then followed a much less hurried interval.

What had seemed like a great idea a few hours ago seemed like a recipe for disaster after some of the alcoholic haze had burned off - and the person he would normally trust most to discuss the problem with was now breathing softly beside him, her blonde hair spread like a fan across his chest. He was afraid any move might wake her - so he lay there in the night, his thoughts chasing themselves in circles until eventually sleep claimed him.

When he awoke a few hours later she was dressed and working at her desk beside the bunk. Seeing him wake up she smiled widely and walked over to put her arms around him, kissing him lingeringly.

"Last night was fun." she said as she pulled away slightly. "And we can certainly do it again while you're here. But I think it's probably best we leave it on a relaxed basis for now?"

Saul's chest felt like a ton-weight had been removed as he smiled back his agreement. It looked like everything would work out okay after all.

OOC

Thanks Bolt

Honestly, I write it to get the voices outta my head - but I'm glad you're enjoying it

For the record - I have no clue where the story is going - it evolves from my playing the game and spontaneously from my own fevered imagination
