Ben Dover looked a little rattled as he walked into Mezcal's after leaving his flashy blue Bullet Taxi in the Weapons bunker next to his team mates yellow one that had arrived shortly before him. He got his drink and found his way to the table that Gianna Maddox and the new girl Susanne Potter were at with local members Leo Smith and Allen Remington. Gianna flashed Ben a quizzical glance, the kind that comes with the rapore of having worked together before. "I gotta tell ya Maddy" Ben said. "I'm not real comfortable with the bosses new assignment roster. Who put a Medic in charge anyway?"
"I don't see you steppin' up to challenge the lead." She replies, a tinge of personal guilt in her voice.
"I know what you mean," Potter agreed. "I told Randy I was a mechanic and he sticks me in a beat up little pickup with a huge engine and he said 'fallow that yellow cab!'"
"Three time on the way here I ran into skags" Ben explains. "All three times it stressed me out severely but it was only for one second. I mean, I'm a damn good heavy gunner. Not having a trigger under my finger just isn't right. Then I realize the speed demon I'm driving is my weapon and 'poof' I'm gone. All because Randy Eads thinks I need to focus on a few other skills." He takes a drink after checking his hand to be sure it is steady.
Leo strokes his chin in thought. "You know, Darlene Griffin is coming down from Elmsfield in a red pick up. It's engine's not quite as big as the Red Neck monster she's driving" gesturing towards Potter. "But it does have a car rifle. Maybe you'd do better just knowing you can shoot. She's been through here in all sorts of cars, I'm sure she'd swap runs with you."
"It's not a bad idea, but I'd feel better with a heavy machine gun." Ben grumbled. "You wouldn't happen to have one in the lock up do ya? Doesn't take that long to swap it out."
"We'll have to pool our petty cash but I think we can hook ya up." Leo said.
"So Ben, I've always wanted to ask you something. Allen piped in. Why is you're nick name 'Don't'."
"I'll tell ya!" Maddy said holding up her hand, excited as a school girl. Ben's head droops forward and he chuckles with embarrassment. "When Helen Waite was the team leader and she saw "Ben Dover" on the duty roster you could see the gleam in her eye as a thousand jokes ran through her mind as it does for everyone. Before she could say anything he looked at her and said "Don't! Just don't'. Without missing a beat she hands him his assignment and said 'Okay Don't, grab your gear and saddle up'. Forever branded as Don't Ben Dover."
"The worst part" Ben adds as he lifts his head "is the idiot that does the monograms screwed mine up and it says 'Don'. I knew I couldn't do anything about it because when she was in charge everyone knew if you had a complaint, you could go straight to Helen Waite." Laughter erupts around the table and in an unspoken tribute everyone drank a toast to the memory of Team Bansi's favorite 'Go to' girl.
Maddy stands to leave "Well, tomorrow's another day of eating dust." She reaches over and punches Ben in the arm. "I'll see YOU on the road skag!" she said with a wink. ;)

Later that night, Darlene rolled into town. With all the noise in the place it was almost comical to see Leo turn and jerk his head like a parrot so his one good ear could better focus on individual sounds. Ben's nerves were quite settled by now. Darlene laughed as Ben related the story, again. "Don't worry about it Don't. It's hard to get used to flat out running when you're used to blasting your way through everything. Just remember the truck is a truck, not a sports car."
"I'm used to an Apache, the car feels kinda weird actually." Ben said, his eye's beginning to glaze at this point. "If you don't mind we'll hook up together for the run to Badlands. Like Maddy and Suzanne are." He swilled the sludge out of the bottom of his glass, rolled his head towards Leo and said "If I make it back this way alive remind me to talk to Randy about getting back to what I do best... shooting stuff."
Leo babbled something in a drunken slur, but it sounded like an acknowledgment.
